King Cotton - March (Brass Band) John Philip Sousa arr. Keith Wilkinson
Composed in 1895 during a three-week engagement of the Sousa Band at the Cotton States and International Exposition in Atlanta, King Cotton is one of John Philip Sousa's most iconic and spirited marches. At a time when cotton was central to the Southern U.S. economy, the phrase "Cotton is King" captured the cultural and economic mood of the era - an idea Sousa cleverly celebrated through this triumphant and lively composition. This brass band arrangement was specially prepared by Dr. Keith M. Wilkinson for the 2010 Summer concert series of the Brass Band of the Western Reserve. It retains all the vibrancy of Sousa's original while offering a fresh presentation for brass band audiences. This work is part of the Alum Creek Music catalogue, now exclusively distributed by BrookWright Music. Difficulty Level: 4th Section + PDF download includes parts and score. El Capitan - March (Brass Band) John Philip Sousa arr. Keith Wilkinson
Originally composed in 1896, El Capitan began its life as a spirited operetta that quickly gained popularity following its premiere in Boston. Drawing from the operetta's vibrant musical themes, John Philip Sousa created the now-famous march of the same name, which retains the theatrical flair of its source material. One of the march's most distinctive features is its sudden transition from 6/8 to 2/4 time midway through the piece - a reflection of Sousa's clever adaptation of operatic motifs into a compelling and unconventional march form. This brass band arrangement was specially prepared by Dr. Keith M. Wilkinson for the Brass Band of the Western Reserve's 2013 summer concert series. It is part of a broader collection of Sousa marches arranged by Wilkinson for both brass band and brass sextet, available from BrookWright Music. This work is part of the Alum Creek Music catalogue, now exclusively distributed by BrookWright Music. Difficulty Level: 4th Section + PDF download includes parts and score. Blaenwern (Brass Band) William Rowlands arr. Keith Wilkinson
This heartfelt arrangement of the beloved hymn Blaenwern (Love Divine) is a touching musical tribute to the memory of Stephen Howard - a gifted cornet player and cherished friend of the arranger Dr. Keith M. Wilkinson. Stephen performed with the Clacton-on-Sea Band under the direction of his father, Robert Howard, and was also a regular guest with the renowned G.U.S. Band, conducted by Dr. Keith M. Wilkinson. Tragically, Stephen passed away in 1984, shortly after serving as principal cornet with the G.U.S. Band on a tour of Switzerland, where he delivered outstanding performances at every concert. This arrangement, lovingly crafted by Dr. Wilkinson, was first performed at Stephen's memorial service in October of that year. Rich in emotional depth and musical beauty, Blaenwern offers brass bands a moving addition to memorial events, religious services, or concert programmes seeking moments of reflection and reverence. This work is part of the Alum Creek Music catalogue, now exclusively distributed by BrookWright Music. Difficulty Level: 4th Section + PDF download includes parts and score. Overture to Zampa (Brass Band) Ferdinand Herold arr. Keith Wilkinson
First performed in Paris in 1831, Ferdinand Herold's opera Zampa enjoyed widespread popularity throughout the 19th century. While the opera itself has faded from the modern stage, its sparkling overture has endured as one of Herold's most celebrated works, remaining a favourite in the orchestral concert repertoire to this day. This dynamic brass band transcription was created by Dr. Keith M. Wilkinson for the Brass Band of the Western Reserve, where it has been met with enthusiastic acclaim from audiences. Full of energy, drama, and melodic brilliance, the overture offers brass bands an opportunity to showcase both technical precision and musical expressiveness. A superb addition to any concert programme, Zampa combines operatic flair with virtuosic writing, making it a rewarding choice for performers and listeners alike. This work is part of the Alum Creek Music catalogue, now exclusively distributed by BrookWright Music. Difficulty Level: 2nd Section + PDF download includes parts and score. Norwegian Dance No. 1 (Brass Band) Grieg arr. Keith Wilkinson
Composed in 1880, Edvard Grieg's Norwegian Dances are among his most enduring and beloved works. Rich with the spirit of Norwegian folk music, the dances were originally written for piano four hands and later brought to broader audiences through the well-known orchestral arrangements by Hans Sitt. This brass band arrangement of Norwegian Dance No. 1 is a complete revision of the version originally prepared for the GUS Band's acclaimed recording European Journey. With its lively rhythms, folk-like melodies, and vibrant scoring, this piece offers an engaging concert work that highlights both the charm and rhythmic vitality of Grieg's writing. For added versatility in programming, Norwegian Dance No. 1 can be effectively paired with Norwegian Dance No. 2, also available from BrookWright Music. Diamond Concerto - Philip Sparke
Diamond Concerto was commissioned by Musikverein Morschied from Germany - Dr. Eric Grandjean, conductor - for a special concert featuring Steven Mead as guest soloist. Together they gave the world premiere on 28th April 2012 in the town theatre of Idar-Oberstein.The commission is a highlight in the 30-year friendship between composer and soloist, which has included many mutual CD projects and concerts and, now, a concerto. Sparke had Steven Mead's special euphonium sound in his head throughout the composition process and made free use of the variety of styles which the world-renowned virtuoso has made his own during his highly successful solo career. The village ofMorschied lies to the west of Frankfurt am Main in the area known as the German Road of Precious Stones, which is famous for its thriving gem industry. Because of this it was decided to give the commission a local connection by choosing the title, Diamond Concerto. Each of the three movements is named after a famous diamond:1 EARTH STARis rather stern in mood, opening with a free fantasy for the soloist over a static chord from the band. This leads to an Allegro Moderato in minor mode where small motives are gradually repeated and developed by both band and soloist.2 OCEAN DREAMuses a varied quote from the composer's Music for Battle Creek, including a melting slow melody that was originally written with Steven Mead in mind.3 BLUE HEARTwas written, at Steven Mead's suggestion, in bebop style and takes the form of a jazz waltz. The quasi-improvisatory central section features a call-and-response passage for the soloist and upper woodwinds.Soloist: Difficulty 6Diamond Concerto is available for euphonium and piano (AMP 374-401) as well as for euphonium and concert band (AMP 354-010).

A Midwest Fanfare - Philip Sparke
A Midwest Fanfare was commissioned by the Brass Band of Battle Creek and premiered by them during their appearance at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago on 20th December 2017 where this fanfare was the opening piece of the entire event. This piece is designed to be played with the cornets split into two teams either side of the band. It opens with the two groups answering each other antiphonally over a repeated figure in the lower band. A calmer central section introduces a euphonium solo which is then taken up by the whole ensemble. This leads back to a repeat of the opening fanfares over a rhythmic accompaniment and a short coda which brings the work to a close.
