The Smoke That Thunders - Andrew Wainwright

David Livingstone was a Scottish missionary and explorer. From 1841 until his death in 1873, Livingstone explored the interior of central and southern Africa. His initial aim was to spread Christianity and bring commerce and ‘civilisation' to these regions, but his later missions were more concerned with exploration. This piece of music tells the story of the part of his journey that led to him discovering Victoria Falls. The work starts out in optimistic fashion, with the Scottish folk-song A Man's a Man for a', by Robert Burns, which Livingstone reportedly used to hum on his travels. The troubles and difficulties of his journey were great and the next section describes his battles with the local African tribes, who were suspicious of his motives. After surviving these assaults, numerous bouts of African fever and several skirmishes with wild animals, a more reflective section ensues, which describes the doubts Livingstone had about continuing his mission. This is epitomised by the hymn Lord, Send Me Anywhere, which Livingstone himself wrote. After much deliberation and prayer, Livingstone decided to carry on and the final section describes his journey along the Zambezi River, the triumphant sounds eliciting his elation at discovering the magnificent Victoria Falls, or as it is known by the locals, "Mosi-oa-Tunya", The Smoke That Thunders.

Mists on the River Wear - Dan Price

Mists On The River Wear is a ‘song and dance' for solo tuba. It was commissioned in 2010 by the Black Dyke Band's solo Eb Bass player and international tuba star Joseph Cook. The SongThe work opens with unaccompanied tuba announcing a three note motif which is the basis for the entire work. The accompaniment enters in broken cluster chords which emulate the mist gliding on the river at early morning. The mist clears and the river motif appears on tenor horns whilst the tuba melody flows above.Geographically, the River Wear passes past Durham Cathedral and Durham Castle as it works its way through the city and to reflect this musically there is an element of a renaissance dance in the centre of this movement in an attempt to capture the historic and physically dominating presence of these buildings within the city.As the movement draws to a close there is a passage of light scoring which enables the soloist to demonstrate their ability at performing multi-phonics, a haunting sound which is eventually engulfed by the sound of the river broadening out as it travels on its journey. The DanceIn contrast to the lyrical first movement, this second movement showcases the versatility of the instrument and the agility of the soloist in a lively dance. The dance begins in compound time and echoes the style of an English jig which represents the energetic life you find in the university city of Durham. There is a deliberate quote written into the theme of the jig which comes from the 1st Movement of Ralph Vaughan-Williams' Concerto for Bass Tuba, which Joseph and the composer share a fondness towards.A brief return to the riverside opening material of the piece quickly leads us into a pseudo "Jazz" waltz, where cross rhythms between soloist and accompaniment gives the melody a sense of disjointedness and ambiguity. However, the music soon flows back into a reprise of the jig with a closing cadenza section that brings Mists On The River Wear to a close.

Lake of the Moon - Kevin Houben

The travels of the Aztec people as they headed south through North America looking for a new home, acted as the inspiration for Lake of the Moon. The composition contains small fragments of Oriental music and South American rhythms and occasionally, Russian Cossacks seem to raise their heads. The journey from North to South is not without danger, which is represented by threatening sounds within the music. In the Adagio divoto the composer takes us along to the Texcoco Lake, which the Aztecs called the lake of the moon. Bring a little bit of South American history to your concert with Lake of the Moon.

STUCK IN THE MIDDLE WITH YOU (Brass Band) - Pankhurst, Lucy

Arranged by Lucy Pankhurst, this is a refreshing remake of the original 70's hit song for Stealers Wheel, that combines nostalgia with some showy and innovative solo work. The melody travels around the band and the overall feel of the melody, rhythms and beat are brilliantly scored to recapture the original song, with a touch of a makeover.

    Quicksilver - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

The piece has been composed to demonstrate the full technical and sonorous capabilities that the E flat tuba has to offer.Quicksilver is divided into three sections: fast-slow-fast.The opening and concluding fast sections have been composed to stretch the performer to the limit and as the title suggests, the soloist needs very quick technical skills in order to successfully negotiate and perform the difficult opening and closing sections. The reflective middle section is a haunting slow melody that demonstrates the beautiful range and colour of the Tuba. With sonorous sounds from the Tuba this middle section fades to a mere whisper towards the end to guide us into the concluding fast section. The recapitulation of the opening follows, this time with transformations as the piece travels to its conclusion. This is a real 'tour de force' for the Tuba and it highlights the Tuba’s technical and sonorous excellence as a soloist instrument. This is an ideal addition to the Tuba soloist repertoire.
