    Brass Triumphant - Gareth Wood - -

Brass Triumphant is a four-movement work and was composed for the Cory Band during their 125th anniversary year of 2009.The first movement is a celebratory fanfare featuring a strong melody as the thread which runs throughout the whole work. The second movement is powerful in nature and reflects struggle and endeavour. The third movement is a beautiful slow melodic poem subtitled Mist of the Forest. A melody carried by the euphonium honours the great Welsh folk melodies we all know and love. The lollipop finale is a rollercoaster ride, taking us to the very edge of band technique. The hymn tune O Iesu Mawr appears though heavily disguised and is a reminder of the composer's Welsh Heritage. The Cory Band under Dr. Robert Childs gave the World premiere of this work during the World Music Contest Gala Concert in Kerkrade, Netherlands July 2009. It later received its British premiere during September of the same year in Birmingham's Symphony Hall, again performed by the Cory Band under the direction of Robert Childs.

Brassed Off Fantasy - Dan Price - -

Commissioned in 2013 by the Grimethorpe Colliery Band and included in their Brass in Concert program the same year, Brassed Off Fantasy is a skilfully written selection of music which appears in the 1996 film Brassed Off, which of course, the Grimethorpe Colliery Band are synonymous. The selection includes some of the popular music of the film, Londonderry Air, Finale from William Tell and The Florentiner March but the composer has cleverly disguised their musical settings with the Florentiner appearing as a German Beer Keller Waltz and William Tell written as a slow melody. Brassed Off Fantasy is a selection, which will please the audience and is fun for the band to perform yet breathes new life into the old Brassed Off favourites.

    Broadway Boogie - Dave Collins - -

Broadway Boogie was commissioned by Leigh Baker and was premiered by the Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Brass Band as part of their 2014 Brass in Concert programme at the Sage, Gateshead. The work is inspired by Piet Mondriaan’s Broadway Boogie-Woogie, which was his last fully completed picture. Mondriaan arrived in New York in 1940, one of the many European artists who moved to the United States to escape World War II. He fell in love with the city immediately, as well as Boogie-Woogie music – to which he was introduced on his first evening in New York.Broadway Boogie is an exciting, dynamic work that is directly influenced by the work of Piet Mondriaan. The atomized bands of stuttering chromatic pulses, interrupted by light grey, create paths through the work suggesting the city’s grid, the movement of traffic, and blinking electric lights – as well as the rhythm of jazz.

    Clapp!!!! - Paul McGhee - -

'Clapp!!!!' was originally written in 2006 whilst studying at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and was written for two players at one piano. The music uses rhythmic phasing with each rhythm assigned it's own tone cluster - as each shift in rhythm occurs the harmonic structure is altered too. Melodic passages are created through the shifts in rhythm and harmony, but these only occur within the given rhythmic parameters. The music can very much be viewed as a study in momentum, with its unrelenting pulse driving us through the music. The Brass Band version of 'Clapp!!!!' was written for Manger Musikklag and Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen, receiving its premiere at the 2010 BrassWind Festival in Bergen, Norway. The Whitburn Band featured Clapp!!!! at their 2012 Brass in Concert programme and the piece was featured by the Grimethorpe Colliery Brass Band on their 'Grimethorpe Entertain' CD.

Colours in Rain - Daniel Hall - -

Colours in Rain, was commissioned by Tredegar Town Band as the opening item in their concert the night before they defended their British Open title. For a fanfare, this composition starts unusually. Breaking away from the more conventional and traditional fanfare, Colours in Rain begins with the ‘Rain Motif’, a repetitive single bar that emulates the sound of rain. The lower band follow, introducing the fanfare theme and exploit a multitude of different colours and connotations, which are uncommon in fanfares. After a calm section the music intensifies and the main theme is once again introduced. The theme is passed around the ensemble until the climax of the piece, where all instruments recapitulate each individual motif before the finale section. This harmony expresses a striking colour, with rapid rhythmic motion, and is where the ‘Colours in Rain’ title originates.
