    Constellations - Philip Harper - -

Constellations is a 'razzmatazz' showcase for brass band and features not only the soloists, but also entire sections from within the band. The piece was commissioned by Nicholas Childs and the Black Dyke Band and the title of course refers to a 'group of stars' such as the band is.The stellar references extend to the individual titles of the three movements of the piece: Supernova is in a funk style and features the trombones followed by the tenor horns; Stargazing is the slow section which highlights the euphoniums and baritones then the basses; and Big Dipper is the final section in big band style which gives a chance for the cornets and the percussion to shine.

Coventry Carol - 16th Century English Traditional - John Barber

Coventry Carol dates from the 16th Century. Traditionally sung 'a capella', the carol refers to the Christmas story from chapter two in the Gospel of Matthew and the Massacre of the innocents, in which Herod ordered all male infants under the age of two in Bethlehem to be killed. It takes the form of a lullaby sung by mothers of the doomed children. In this arrangement, the Dies Irae or 'Day of Wrath' theme heard in the introduction lets us know of the impending rage and massacre portrayed in verse three, before the music eventually subsides and resolves with calmness and assuredness with the raised third tierce de Picardy.

Dear Old Blighty - Dan Price - -

Commissioned in 2014 by the Flowers Band and premiered at the Cheltenham Music Festival in the same year, Dear Old Blighty is a creative arrangement of songs popular in 1914 and of those released during the World War I period. These songs were used to help boost morale both at home and in the trenches being performed by the popular singers of the day. Although not patriotic songs in the strictest sense they are commonly described as ‘the songs that won the war’.The selection includes; There’s a Long Long Trail, It’s a Long Way to Tipperary, Oh! It’s a Lovely War, I Wonder Who’s Kissing Her Now?, Pack up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit Bag, Daisy Bell, and Keep the Home Fires Burning, all cleverly tailored together in the composers recognisably distinctive style.

    Enter the Galaxies - Paul Lovatt-Cooper - -

Enter the Galaxies paints a musical picture of the experiences and excitement space exploration has to offer. The music begins with a 'space-like' whirlwind of triplets and semiquavers from the cornets and glockenspiel which accompanies a fanfare from the 'middle' of the band. This quickly leads into a presto section introducing the lyrical principal horn as the soloist. The horn is followed by the euphonium as the flowing melody lines are passed around, juxtaposed by a virtuosic counter-line from the principal cornet. The journey into the unknown is taken up a gear as the music modulates through a variety of keys before featuring the back row cornets playing the central melodic motif. From this point the music grows in intensity before the euphonium and soprano cornet 'lift off' into the finale with glissandi to concert Cs.Following a brief coda, the music comes to a climactic end using the melodic intervals heard throughout the piece with an augmented 5th resolving to the dominant 5th and finally onto a brilliant F major chord to close.Enter the Galaxies is dedicated to Cory Band and received its premi?re in November 2008 at The Sage, Gateshead, as part of the band's winning programme at the Brass in Concert Chamionships. The piece has subsequently been featured as the title track to a CD to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Cory Band.
