A Little Prayer - Evelyn Glennie - Robert Childs

Originally composed for solo marimba, this popular version of A Little Prayer was made in 1998 following Evelyn Glennie's collaboration with Black Dyke Band during the recording of their Grammy nominated Reflected in Brass CD. Robert Childs, then principal euphonium with Black Dyke, requested Evelyn's permission to make the arrangement for his son, David. The composer obliged, and Robert presented the score and parts to his son as a seventeenth birthday present.Evelyn Glennie revealed: "When I wrote this chorale for marimba, it expressed my spiritual feelings and displayed a pleasantly relaxed dimension of the instrument. Over the years my exposure to brass bands has filled me with wonder; their musical diversity is considerable. I had no hesitation in giving A Little Prayer to Robert Childs to bring this little melody to life."Having composed the work when she was only 13, Evelyn continued: "As a child I would never have believed that such a short and simple piece of music, would come to grow this much. A little Prayerserves to prove that one should always bet their chips on what they believe in, for nine out of ten it will be worth it!"After twenty years of exclusivity, Prima Vista Musikk is proud to make this beautiful arrangement available to all. A Little Prayer provides the perfect reflective interlude for concert or devotional use by euphonium soloists and bands of all abilities.

A Troika? Tidy! from Euphonium Concerto - Karl Jenkins - -

A Troika? Tidy!, is taken from Karl Jenkins' Euphonium Concerto, an extended work given its world premiere by euphonium soloist David Childs and the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Owain Arwel Hughes in St. David's Hall, Cardiff during the last night of the 2009 Welsh Proms.A Troika? Tidy!, which would normally form the fourth movement of the concerto, begins with menace before the soloist has the opportunity exploit phenomenal technique. With a beautiful change of gear towards the end, a rapturous interlude is ushered in leading to a brief cadenza with staggering pyrotechnics in a varity of cross-rhythms conducted over the incessant chug of sleigh-bells.On his eagerness to compose the work for David, Karl Jenkins stated, "It's been a privilege to write for such a virtuoso performer. We had been talking about it for some time and happily it all came together in 2009. David is a wonderful musician of the highest quality and it was a joy and, indeed, a challenge, to write a work for both him and an instrument of such beauty and agility."A Troika? Tidy! for euphonium and brass band recieved its premiere on November 29th 2009 in Swansea's Brangwyn Hall performed by David Childs and the Cory Band conducted by Dr. Robert Childs, and can be heard on Doyen CD262 Moto Perpetuo.Other individual movements and the complete Concerto for Euphonium with brass band accompniament are vailable from Prima Vista Musikk. It Takes Two from Euphonium Concerto - Karl Jenkins - -

It Takes Two is taken from Karl Jenkins' Euphonium Concerto, an extended work given its world premiere by euphonium soloist David Childs and the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Owain Arwel Hughes in St. David's Hall, Cardiff during the last night of the 2009 Welsh Proms. It Takes Two, which would normally form the third movement of the concerto, is an improvisatory style for the soloist. The music is in the form of a habanera style tango with the euphonium 'partnering' a number of instruments in the ensemble while 'breaking away' from time to time in rolling roulades. A judicious use of multi-phonics rounds off the coda.On his eagerness to compose the work for David, Karl Jenkins stated, "It's been a privilege to write for such a virtuoso performer. We had been talking about it for some time and happily it all came together in 2009. Mexican Hat Dance - Traditional - Roger Webster

The widely acclaimed Mexican Hat Dance became so popular that at one point it was declared the national folk dance of Mexico. Its popularity is attributed to the great Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova. After a visit to Mexico in 1930, she fell in love with the culture and spectacular costumes of the country, and decided to include the dance in her permanent repertoire. The ecstatic Mexican cultural authorities felt that such honour could only mean that the Hat Dance was indeed the most important dance in Mexico.Mexican Hat Dance was for many years inextricably linked to the charismatic trumpeter Rafael M?ndez, whose flamboyant soloistic style was the inspiration behind this arrangement, which is also available from Prima Vista Musikk with piano accompaniment.

Romanza from Euphonium Concerto - Karl Jenkins - -

Romanza is taken from Karl Jenkins' Euphonium Concerto, an extended work given its world premiere by euphonium soloist David Childs and the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Owain Arwel Hughes in St. David's Hall, Cardiff during the last night of the 2009 Welsh Proms.Romanza, which would normally form the second movement of the concerto, is reminiscent of Jenkin's Benedictus from The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace. It is simple music, one might almost say innocent and naive, celebrating conjuct melodic shapes with light harmonic accompaniment in the spirit of a tranquil folk-meditation.On his eagerness to compose the work for David, Karl Jenkins stated, "It's been a privilege to write for such a virtuoso performer. We had been talking about it for some time and happily it all came together in 2009. Tenor Toccata - Rodney Newton - -

Composed for, and dedicated to, Owen Farr, this single movement work for tenor horn is divided into clearly defined sections. The introduction consists of a fanfare figure which is taken up by the soloist and turned into a cheerful melody. This is developed and varied during the progress of the first section, culminating in a climax. The pace later slackens and a new theme emerges, which grows out of the opening fanfare figure. This is then taken up by the accompaniment and shared with the soloist. A return to the faster music brings a new set of variants on the original theme, which builds to a broad statement of the middle section theme. A recapitulation of the primary material is rounded off by an energetic coda, also based on earlier material.Tenor Toccata is also available with piano accompaniment as part of Prima Vista Musikk's Owen Farr Solo Series.

The Juggler from Euphonium Concerto - Karl Jenkins - -

The Juggler is taken from Karl Jenkins' Euphonium Concerto, an extended work given its world premiere by euphonium soloist David Childs and the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Owain Arwel Hughes in St. David's Hall, Cardiff during the last night of the 2009 Welsh Proms. The Juggler, would normally form the first movement of the concerto, but it stands alone very well as an individual work for euphonium and band. The music is episodic beginning with with a minimalist texture over which the euphonium "tweets" three short calls before riffing around. It is broken up by a 'circus waltz' exploiting the agility and vituosity of the euphonium in a fun context. On his eagerness to compose the work for David, Karl Jenkins stated, "It's been a privilege to write for such a virtuoso performer. We had been talking about it for some time and happily it all came together in 2009. Wheal Breage - Terry Reed - -

The Cornish word Wheal strictly means "a place of work" but it is usually thought of as meaning a mine, because all Cornish mine names were prefixed by the word Wheal. The composer is the MD of Breage & District Silver Band and this march is dedicated to both his band, based in the village of Breage, Cornwall, and to the great Cornish mining heritage. Breage Parish had a number of successful tin and copper ore mines, some of which started in the 16th and 17th centuries and lasted until the end of the 19th century. Cornish Brass Bands and Male Voice Choirs were formed by the miners and have had a long association with the mining communities around Cornwall.Wheal Breage starts off in a jolly way to reflect the mining youth's carefree life outside of mining. At Section C, the march modulates to a minor key, reflecting the hard, industrious nature of mining; you can almost hear the Beam Engine Houses pumping the water out of the mines. At Section D, there is a dramatic time signature change from 6/8 to 4/4, followed in the Trio at Section E, by an original melody which was written to reflect and remember the men (and children) who tragically lost their lives in many mining accidents that occurred over a number of centuries. Section F is a joyful coda, reflecting the past Cornish Miners' Gala Parades which were headed by a Cornish Brass Band.
