Stratos - Concerto for Euphonium - Jonathan Bates

Stratos (Concerto for Euphonium) was composed for the euphonium virtuoso David Childs, and is featured on the Flowers Brass Band CD Stratos, featuring all new works by Jonathan Bates.I - Charge of the Intergalactic RocksUnpredictable in nature, this opening movement fizzes along through varying keys, styles, time signatures and many sudden changes of both volume and timbre. A large senza misura cadenza for the euphonium, accompanied by snare drum playing in time, forms the central focal point of the movement, where many of the motifs used throughout the movement are introduced primarily, or revisited in a new guise. This movement relies mostly on rhythmic and textural variety, rather than the melodic and harmonic nature of the latter movements.II - Sleeping Earth (from Outer Space)A calm and desolate setting forms the core of the second movement. The music aims to capture the view over the Earth from outer space, the silent beauty of the curvature of the planet and the sun beaming from behind.III - Dance of the Spiral GalaxiesThe rip-roaring finale showcases the soloist's flair and rhythm with a driving pulse from the first note to the last, climaxing in a grand reprise of the first movement. An opening theme played in the solo line, which is then repeated through several instruments, forms the backbone of the movement as it is developed and changed from new ideas and textures.

CONCERTO FOR EUPHONIUM (Brass Band Parts) - Scott, Andy

Brass Band parts only, solo part not included - available separately. The 'Concerto for Euphonium' with Brass Band is scored in three movements: The Lure of the Red Jacket; Far Beyond the Stars; The Dragon's Den. The Lure of the Red Jacket responds musically to these ideas and attitudes; a non-relenting riff that signifies the hard slog of practice, scorings which find members of the band supporting the soloist, all the time the soloist putting together new riffs and ideas. Stylistically all this happens within a frame of minimalism and funk. Far Beyond the Stars is a simple folk-like melody that is stated by the soloist, which develops with different harmonic backdrops being introduced. The poignant words form the focus of the emotional intensity of this piece. The Dragon's Den is a fierce and fiery fusion of energy, virtuosic playing and intricate ensemble work, the finale of the Concerto for Euphonium draws upon the composers experience of big band and small group performance and writing. Abide with me for euphonium and brass band, arr. Paul McGhee

Paul McGhee made this haunting arrangement of W.H. Monk's famous hymn tune for the young Belgianstar of the euphonium Glenn Van Looy, who performed it on 27 January 2013 at the Royal NorthernCollege of Music Festival of Brass, with the Leyland Band conducted by Michael Bach. Surrounding thethree verses of the solo line are wisps of texture, irregular rhythms and colours form brass andpercussion, giving the music an unsettled feel. Abide with me is a favourite of Paul McGhee, who says“When watching the film 28 Days Later I thought it would make a rather striking arrangement for brassband. This was confirmed further when the hymn was used at the 2012 opening ceremony of the LondonOlympics. The contrast between the static, slow moving melody and the rhythmic effects of the dancerswas something that I thought could be captured in an arrangement.”Grade 4 (soloist 5)Duration 5 mins?35 plus postage and packing

For a Flower - Hermann Pallhuber

For a Flower is a very melodic and virtuosic solo work for euphonium and brass band. It opens with a gentle solo introduction on euphonium, which develops into a grand hymnal theme. Following this comes a faster and more virtuosic section in a traditional Irish style, with a varied dialogue between the band and the soloist. The work closes triumphantly with the hymnal theme of the opening. For a Flower showcases both the musical and technical capabilities of this wonderful instrument. The euphonium soloist must naturally master both skills: lyrical playing and virtuoso playing. For a Flower was commissioned by the Dutch euphonium virtuoso Robbert Vos and is dedicated to his wife, Evi.
