Originally part of the score Walton wrote for the film The First of the Few, this fabulous music found greater fame in the concert version he made in 1942. Now, at last, here is an authorised version for brass band by an acknowledged master of the art, Elgar Howarth. The Prelude - essentially a march in his best Crown Imperial style leads to a dazzling Fugue which incorporates a quiet interlude before the dramatic finale. Whether used as a concert opener or roof-raising finale it is sure to delight audiences and players alike. Recorded on Polyphonic QPRL220D Master Brass (Volume Sixteen).

Whirlegigg - Kenneth Hesketh
'Whirlegigg' is the middle English word for a contraption that continuously spins. A great fascination with many inventors of the medieval period was to develop a perpetual motion machine constantly turning and giving off energy. This idea is particularly apt for this piece. A simple ternary structure gives ample opportunity for both boisterous and reflective material with gyrating accompaniment figures never far away. The machine almost stops near the end, but finally musters one last burst of excitement and energy to bring the work to its close.Brass Band Grade 5: 1st SectionDuration: 5 minutes.Whirlegigg has been recorded by the Leyland Band, conducted by Jason Katsikaris, and is available on the CD Penlee.

Commissioned by the Swiss Music Association, this very accessible work is mostly intended for small ensembles or those with mixed instrumentation. Jacob de Haan begins his arrangement of the well-known hymn Allein Gott in der Hoh' sei Ehr (All Glory Be to God on High) with a quotation from his own Missa Katharina, a mass for choir, soprano, and band. To this melody he sets the Latin text from the last part of the Gloria. The chorale is then heard after an interlude and can, at the director's discretion, be accompanied by the choir singing in either German or English. A perfect work for church concerts.

Back in the day I always enjoyed playing the well-known trombone works by Alexandre Guilmant and Ferdinand David and I wanted to return to that type of language and writing in a short concert piece. The music is direct in its expression, mostly exciting but sometimes lyrical. The pace of this etude is relentless and requires some deft double tonguing although I stayed away from too many running semiquavers. The last note should ideally be the high D (concert) but a B flat is indicated as a suitable alternative.- Rob WiffinDuration: 3.45
