This rousing fanfare prelude for Brass Band and optional Organ by Kenneth Downie is based on the monumental hymn Now thank we all our God, which dates from 17th century Germany. The arrangement is featured on the CD Classic Hymns for Orchestra - The Symphonic Music of Kenneth Downie (available here) as a symphonic brass setting. The arranger writes: 'The depth of the words is underpinned by the grandeur of the music, so I have tried to reflect the same regal approach in my setting for brass band.' This arrangement will be an ideal opener or prelude for concerts or church services. Commissioned by Micah Dominic Parsons, Blaenwern Diversions is based on the well loved hymn, Love Divine. The composer writes: 'Originally intended to be a set of variations, I found myself wandering around the notes of the hymn tune at the piano and found that the variations almost took on a life of their own resulting in what we have here - diversions. There are 8 diversions in total; the introductory diversion; diversions 1 - 6; and the finale which are divided into three linked movements. Blaenwern Diversions represents my entry into the world of contest works, so even though the piece aims to test the band, it is important that the band enjoy the music within no matter how treacherous!' An effective opener to any Christmas concert, based on the French carol, 'Bring a torch, Jeanette, Isabella'. It tells the story of a group of children in medieval Provence, dressed up as shepherds and milkmaids, carrying torches and candles as they proceed to the stable. As they draw closer and their excitement increases, they are constantly reminded by their parents to keep the noise down so that they don't wake up the baby Jesus. The music begins quietly and builds to a majestic conclusion. "If I were still conducting bands regularly, this would certainly be on my list as a Christmas concert opener - it sets the energy and mood most effectively. The scoring is terrific." ABOUT THIS PIECE: Cantatio are pleased to release this hymn meditation on the much-loved hymn by Adam D J Taylor. Commissioned by the world famous Wingates Band, this arrangement became a centrepiece of the band's online presence during the COVID pandemic. Story time... Horatio Spafford was a successful attorney and real estate investor who lost a fortune in the great Chicago fire of 1871. Around the same time, his beloved four-year-old son died of scarlet fever. Thinking a vacation would do his family some good, he sent his wife and four daughters on a ship to England, planning to join them after he finished some pressing business at home. However, while crossing the Atlantic Ocean, the ship was involved in a terrible collision and sunk. More than 200 people lost their lives, including all four of Horatio Spafford's precious daughters. His wife, Anna, survived the tragedy. Upon arriving in England, she sent a telegram to her husband that began: "Saved alone. What shall I do?" Horatio immediately set sail for England. At one point during his voyage, the captain of the ship, aware of the tragedy that had struck the Spafford family, summoned Horatio to tell him that they were now passing over the spot where the shipwreck had occurred. As Horatio thought about his daughters, words of comfort and hope filled his heart and mind. He wrote them down, and they have since become a well-beloved hymn: When peace like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll-- Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say It is well, it is well with my soul. Infernal Ride - Phillip Littlemore
Infernal Ride is mercurial and virtuosic, reflecting the mad-cap chase of Ichabod Crane's final ride on his horse, Gunpowder, in the story by Washington Irving, namely The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Often an atmosphere of driven fear pushes the music forward, only briefly stopping for breath. The work closes with flourishes in rapid succession, perhaps with the hapless Ichabod meeting his unfortunate end!Brass Band Grade 5: 1st SectionDuration: 7 minutes.Infernal Ride has been recorded by the Leyland Band, conducted by Jason Katsikaris, and is available on the CD Penlee.

London Eye - Nigel Hess
London Eye is an incredibly large rotating wheel situated on the South Bank of the River Thames. This movement depicts a 'flight' on this riverside wheel, at the top of which the panoramic view of London is breath-taking and the expanse of the music is a suitable depiction of that view. This piece is the second movement of Nigel Hess's New London Pictures which represents elements of London in the 21st Century.Brass Band Grades 4/5: Premier Youth and 2nd SectionDuration: 4 minutes.

Titan's Progress (Score & Parts) - Hermann Pallhuber
Commissioned by Austria's leading brass band, Brass Band Oberoesterreich, Titan's Progress is a series of descriptive, virtuoso episodes based on the principal character of the novel by Jean Paul. This was also the original subject of Mahler's Symphony No. 1, from which Hermann Pallhuber derives much of his material. The work has proved an exceptionally popular test piece all over the world. Titan's Progress was the selected test piece for the British Open Brass Band Championship, held at Symphony Hall, Birmingham on Saturday 12th September 2009. New London Pictures - Nigel Hess
New London Pictures represents elements of London in the 21st Century. The Millennium Bridge describes the pedestrian's journey across this wonderful new landmark bridge over the Thames, starting at the imposing Tate Modern, crossing the busy river, and onwards to St. Paul's Cathedral with its bells ringing out over the great city. London Eye is an incredibly large ferris wheel situated on the South Bank of the River Thames. As with all modern cities, London is over-crowded with motor vehicles. London is the first major city in Europe to adopt a Congestion Charge, and this piece (with its stop and go traffic lights) is both racy and comical. Peterloo - Malcolm Arnold
Peterloo is the derisive name given to an incident that happened on16th August 1819 in St Peter's Fields, Manchester, when an orderly crowd of some 80,000 people met to hear a speech on political reform. On the orders of the magistrates they were interrupted by the Yeomanry, who attempted to seize the banners they carried, and to arrest their speaker, Henry Hunt. Cavalry was sent in, and eleven people were killed and four hundred injured in the ensuing panic. This overture attempts to portray these happenings.Brass Band Grade 5: 1st Section.Duration 10 minutes.

£29.95Badinerie - Jonathan Bates
DURATION: 2'00". DIFFICULTY: Difficult. J.S Bach originally composed 'Badinerie' as part of his Orchestra Suite No. 2 in B Minor, and quickly became one of the most popular virtuoso show-pieces for flute players due to it's quick pace and complexity. In more modern times, the melody has become synonymous with the Nokia mobile phone ringtone, one of 2 famous early ringtones based on the music of Bach (alongside his Prelude to Cello Suite No.1). One lesser known take on the classic Badinerie is by Italian drummer Andrea Vadrucci (alias Vadrum) who has made a global reputation for himself by taking various well-known classical works and re-imagining them into a rock/metal style, and it is this interpretation which acts as the inspiration for this showy, yet tongue-in-cheek feature for percussion. .
