£63.34Temperamental (Brass Band) Fendall Hill
This work by Fendall Hill was the set test for the 2021 National Brass Band Championships of New Zealand, B Grade. The composer writes: 'J.S. Bach (1685-1750) is deemed by many to be the 'Ulimate Composer'. He added an incredible proportion to the DNA of western music, and his influence is heard in the music of today. Like many artists, he was not overly recognised as a composer during his lifetime, and it took an 1829 performance of the St Matthew Passion by Mendelssohn to ignite a recognition of his place in the music world, a place he has maintained ever since. This piece starts with a similar spark of rediscovery of the music of Bach. It contains arrangements of various works, interspersed with composition based on Bach's chord structures, sections in the style of Bach, and original sections inspired by the moods created along the way. The first section explores the Toccata, and great organ works. This leads into an exploration of his choral works, and a finale based on the Preludes. The word 'Tempered' has different meanings, and all seem to apply to the music of Bach, and these appeal to the musical, engineering and spiritual aspects of my personal life. His music reaches to the humanity and divinity, it has strength, structure and order that creates frameworks in which incredible complexity reigns; and the complexity leads to a wildness, a kind of craziness that represents a range of human moods, and can change without warning. The same piece of music affects people in very different ways. I don't know if it's Bach's music, or us, but it can seem out of control and under control at the same time - the combination is highly temperamental. Johann Pachelbel's Canon in D is a cornerstone of the Baroque period, a work widely known and frequently heard at concerts and events globally. This brass band arrangement by Steven Ponsford offers a new perspective on this classical piece. The arrangement begins with the familiar ground bass theme, followed by a series of four-bar motifs. Ponsford has developed these motifs, distributing them across the band to give interest to every section of the band. A short fugue is included in the middle of the piece, referencing a style Pachelbel contributed to. £37.25Nicaea - Band Warm-up (Brass Band) John Bacchus Dykes arr. Steve Kellner
This warm-up is designed to help players and conductors hear and improve section, group, and full band intonation, rhythmic precision, and balance in an efficient and musically satisfying way. The tune Nicaea was selected because of its easy-to-hear triads and intervals, and the harmonisation used throughout is purposely simple and consistent, so that the players can become very familiar with potential intonation trouble spots. Likewise, discrepancies in precision and balance will easily be heard. Keys have been carefully selected to expose specific intonation problems within the sections and groups, like the overlap between Eb and Bb instruments in the horns/baritones and later in euphoniums/basses, and 5th position tuning in the trombones. The format in sections 2 through 5 is consistent, beginning with a single section of the band playing in unison, then expanding into two-part and four-part harmony. After eight bars that section is joined by another section or sections to form a common multi-section group used in brass band scoring, such as the 'mellow choir', 'low brass', 'tuba-euphonium choir', and 'bright choir'. Section 6 features the two largest groupings, the 'all but cornets' and 'high brass'. Section 7 brings the whole band together for a majestic and powerful finish. This charming setting by Australian composer Barrie Gott is of the favourite carol The First Nowell. Although this version is for brass band, choir and piano, it is orchestrated such that it will work for standalone brass band. The arranger writes: 'I have always been fascinated with the words and music of this majestic carol. It was first written for choir and piano and then orchestrated for the Brisbane Lord Mayor's Carols with the Queensland Pops Orchestra. A further arrangement for brass band was prepared for a Salvation Army event. The setting is for four verses (1,2,5 and 6) and tells the Gospel story in a nutshell. This unique arrangement by Fendall Hill of Away in a Manger brings together two beloved melodies of the cherished Christmas carol, seamlessly intertwining the popular American setting known as "Mueller" with the gentle strains of "Cradle Song", the tune favoured across Britain, Ireland, and the British Commonwealth. First introduced to American audiences by James R. Murray in Dainty Songs for Little Lads and Lasses (1887), the Mueller melody - often mistakenly attributed to Martin Luther - has become the most recognised version of the carol in the United States. Complementing this is the lyrical Cradle Song, composed by William J. Kirkpatrick and published in Around the World with Christmas (1895), offering a tender counterpoint to Murray's setting.
