H.M.S Pinafore Overture - Arthur Sullivan - Gavin Somerset

The collaborations of Gilbert & Sullivan have given us some of the most memorable music in history. The overture to the H.M.S pinafore is a lively, foot tapping introduction to the comic opera, first performed in 1878. With wonderful melodies and band parts to keep every player entertained, this makes a great alternative to the challenging Italian overtures so often played. This piece has been skilfully arranged and can be played by most levels of bands.

    W.S.B. March - Gavin Somerset

After performing a number of arrangements by Gavin Somerset, the band commissioned him to compose for them, an original march that would serve as their signature tune for years to come. The march was composed in a light 6/8 time that would get passes by listening and audience’s feet tapping along. Composed with a DC, this is optional and the finale of the march has a licence for a Grandioso and accelerando to give the work that flair for its finale. Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 (allegro) - J.S Bach - John Abbott

The "Brandenburg Concertos" were composed and dedicated to Christian Ludwig, Margrave of Brandenburg in 1721, however it seems now they were never actually played for him. This 1st movement has been kilfully arranged as a trio for Soprano Cornet and 2 Bb Cornets (solo cornet, and repiano). This is sure to test the strongest of players, utilising the soprano's high register and making work of the low register on the Bb cornets. As well as keeping the band entertained with running semi-quavers (and some wonderful intervals for the basses!!!) This certainly is a hard piece to perform for the three soloists, but its well worth the challenge.

    Janacek's 'Taras Bulba' - Janacek

Comments from Tim Paton, the arranger of Janacek’s ‘Taras Bulba’: “I will never forget the day in 1967 when I was introduced to the music of Leos Janacek, a Czech composer born in 1854, who died in 1928. Janacek was little known in Britain until the 1960’s, when the conductor Charles Macherras introduced his unique music. I heard a recording of Macherras conducting the Pro Arte Orchestra in a performance of Janacek’s “Sinfonietta”.It was in 1969 that I first heard Janacek’s Symphonic Rhapsody, “Taras Bulba”.Janacek’s music is exciting, powerful, emotive, impassioned and unpredictable.I have taken the first and third movements of this piece, and adapted them for Brass Band, which was at times extremely difficult, but rewarding. It sometimes took up to an hour to be satisfied that a mere several bars had been reproduced to convey the composer’s intentions. The Death of AndriThe Cossaks, under the leadership of Taras Bulba, are fighting against the Poles in the 17th century. Taras’s son Andri seeks to rescue his love, a Polish princess, from a city which is being besieged by the Cossaks. Having found her, he throws in his lot with the Poles, but is finally captured by his father, who executes him as a traitor before riding off again to battle.Prophesy and Death of Taras BulbaTaras himself is finally captured and condemned to be nailed to a tree and burned alive. As the flames creep around him, Taras has the satisfaction of seeing histroops escape, and as he dies, sees a vision of his country freed at last. This is incredibly descriptive music. The mood is constantly changing, creating feelings of love and anger, celebration and melancholy, despair and triumph. This Brass Band EditionThe duration of the original symphonic rhapsody, three movements, is approximately 23 minutes. I chose the first and third movements, so the Brass Band edition is approximately 14 minutes. The main reason is twofold: Being realistic about the demands this music would place on the stamina of the brass player; Keeping the piece less than 15 minutes, so that, if desired, it could be used on the contest platform. Two unique qualities of Janacek’s music had to be taken into account when preparing this brass band version. His compositional technique was individual, at times not sticking to traditional expectations, in both form and orchestration. I imagined what the genius himself would have said looking at my work, and how to tackle a particular section to emulate his original intentions. This was particularly the case when dealing with high woodwind and violin parts, the use of tremolo in string parts, and the orchestral harp.Percussion: Janacek included timpani, side drum, cymbals, triangle and tubular bells. For reasons stated previously, I have also included xylophone and glockenspiel. I have also added the gong in a couple of places to enhance the dramatic effect of the music.

    Devil's Duel - Peter Meechan

Devila??s Duel takes its inspiration from the story of the infamous Niccolo Paganini whose virtuosity was astounding. He began playing the violin at age seven, and by the age of 13 had the reputation of being the leading Italian violinist of his time. People began to speculate about Paganinia??s great talent, and began to wonder about his gift. He became known as a a??Hexensohna? or witcha??s brat.Paganinia??s demonic reputation became so widespread that his talent was often attributed to the belief that he had help from the devil. Later in life, Paganini would tour Europe, though rumours of supernatural guidance never ceased. He would give concerts, and often a??duela? with other virtuosi - a??winninga? by improvising during the contest (or concert!) by adding octaves, thirds, and sixths, and often playing more notes in a second than thought humanly possible.Devils Duel uses the famous music of Paganinia??s Caprice no.24 as its musical material, and sees the euphonium soloist duelling with various instruments in the band with displays of virtuosity in the fast music, and cunning in the slow.Devila??s Duel was commissioned by David Thornton, to whom this is dedicated. The premiere was given by David Thornton, Nicholas Childs, and the Black Dyke Band at Leeds Town Hall, 26 May 2006.

Cantonale des Musiques Vaudoises and the Association Cantonale des Musiques Neuch?teloises for the 2013 Swiss Cantonales festivals. On Eagle's Wings'

Music for Brass Band Duration: 6:00 MinutesPercussion: 3 PlayersTimpani, Glockenspiel, Triangle, Suspended Cymbal. All Rights ReservedProgramme Notes I first came across this beautiful hymn a few years ago at a friend’s wedding. The powerful words of the refrain particularly struck with me along with its lovely melody, which form the basis for the cornet solo. I intend for the music to radiate the warmth and comfort of the Eagle's wings before taking flight. It soars higher and higher (leaving behind burdens and unhappiness) before breaking through into the sunlight - the powerful climax for full band with the soloist soaring majestically over all.And He will raise you up on eagles' wingsBear you on the breath of dawnMake you to shine like the sunAnd hold you in the palm of His hand.'On Eagle's Wings’ was premiered and recorded by Jim Hayes for his 'Angels Will Fall' CD in his 'Jonny Midnight' series, accompanied by the Co-operative Funeralcare Band and conducted by Michael Fowles, in 2016.Tony SwainsonTony Swainson is Senior Low Brass Tutor at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS) in Glasgow. He made his professional debut with the Halle Orchestra under John Barbirolli before joining the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra as Principal Tuba, where he remained for 27 years. He relinquished his position at the BBC in order to concentrate on teaching, conducting, arranging and composing. Tony has conducted all of Scotland’s leading brass bands with success. He now enjoys conducting the Junior Symphony Orchestra at the RCS. Two of his recent pieces for brass band have been recorded, the euphonium solo 'The Auld Noost' by Steven Mead and the cornet solo 'On Eagle's Wings' by Jim Hayes. Tony particularly enjoys composing and arranging for the various brass groups at the RCS and away from brass for schools symphony orchestras for which original music includes 'St.Ninian's Mass' and 'Pie Pelicane '.

Bacchanale (from Glazunov's ballet, The Seasons) - Alexander Glazunov

A lively, joyous item, ideal as a light interlude in any concert and especially appropriate for late season/Christmas themed events with its jaunty, positive sounds. A great arrangement of Glazunov’s ‘Autumn’ movement from his ballet, The Seasons.Alexander Glazunov (1865 – 1936) was a Russian composer, music teacher and conductor. He was a child prodigy and was taught privately byRimsky-Korsakov, who said Glazunov’s musical progress did not increase day by day but hour by hour. He began composing at age eleven and wrote his first symphony at age 16 in 1881 and it was premiered one year later. His ballet ‘The Seasons’ was first performed by the Imperial Ballet in St Petersburg on 20 February 1900and was choreographed byMarius Petipa. It was written in one act and four scenes, and this piece represents the moment when all The Seasons take part in a glorious dance (the well-known “Autumn Bacchanale”) while leaves from autumn trees rain upon their merriment.
