A Song for Bram is a short work, originally composed piano and brass band, and is dedicated to the memory of Bramwell Tovey, a close friend and colleague of the composer, and a conductor, composer, pianist and musician of huge talent, who sadly passed away before his time in the summer of 2022. In this short piece the composer has tried to imagine what kind of tune Bram would have improvised at the piano, something he frequently engaged in. No doubt it would have been a mixture of bluesy jazz, hymn tune, and love song, and this is how the solo piano takes off. In the middle section of a what is a simple tertiary structure, introduced are quotes from two hymn tunes Bram particularly loved, never having forgotten his Salvation Army roots. Bram's 'Song' returns, this time on a plaintive flugelhorn horn, and which reaches a climax with the full band before receding, literally, into the distance.....(to a new life beyond?).Duration: 6.00

Flashback was written for Lee Rigg and the Wardle Academy Youth Band and opened their winning programme at the 2022 European Youth Championships (Development Section) in Birmingham England.Prior to his transition to the conductors podium Lee was a long serving member of the Black Dyke Band and considered by many (including myself) to be perhaps the world's greatest repiano cornet player!In many respects our careers have run in parallel and a number of my works over the years have included solos with Lee in mind. £64.00Milonga del Angel (Soprano Cornet, Cornet and Trombone Trio with Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Piazzolla, Astor - Olsrud, Sverre Stakston
This arrangement was made after hearing Astor Piazzolla s 1986 recording of his own work written in 1965. The original instrumentation of bandoneon, violin and string bass is here arranged for three wind soloists with Concert Band. The Soprano Sax is the main soloist (filling the bandoneon role), while the trombone and clarinet shares the violin part as a kind of flirting undertone to the soprano saxophone. It s not possible to make a 100% correct notation of the solo parts, so it s recommended to listen to the record album Zero Hour from 1986 to get the best impression of the work. Enjoy Milonga Del Angel and imagine a small, dark cafe in Buenos Aires!

New Beginnings was commissioned by the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain and was first performed by The National Children's Brass Band of Great Britain in August 2021.It describes in sonic terms the effect that energy can create, both musically and emotionally. Here, in a burst of vibrant rhythmic patterning, and dedicated to the young players of this famous brass band, New Beginnings is born.There are three sections:From the start, it is driven by the percussion section, who push the energy through a sequence of mysterious and joyous moments.After a sonorous climax, the music subsides to a slower, romantic middle section where the earlier rhythmic energy is transformed into melodic playing from the brass.As the Finale begins, earlier themes are combined, first with a fugato which passes the melodies around the band and then unites in a recapitulation that brings the whole composition to a rousing finish as the romantic hymn makes a final appearance.Duration: 10.00
