ENGLISH HERITAGE (Brass Band Set) - George Lloyd
English Heritage was first heard in the pleasant surroundings of Hampstead Heath as part of a Kenwood Lakeside concert given on 2nd July 1988. It was commissioned for English Heritage by Michael Webber, the organiser of Kenwood Concerts for English Heritage and subsequently chosen as the Championship Section test-piece for the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain 1990. The sense of historic significance inherent in ensuring the preservation of England's fine buildings of the past drew from the composer music which seems to capture the essence of Olde England. This is a musical view of England's heritage concerned not only with pageantry and ceremonial but also catching some of the humour inherent in the English character as well as those quiet reflective moments which have surely fashioned England's past and influenced its present.

I believe the practice of using a choral or hymn tune to develop fundamental playing basics in order to 'warm up' a brass ensemble is universally supported. However, this imaginative little exercise combines the virtues of choral playing with additional challenges addressing ensemble, phrasing, balance, dynamics (inc. crescendos and diminuendos), intonation (inc. unison passages) and varied articulations. For the discerning band in search of quality, not quite as easy as it looks !

The sound and culture of brass bands was part of Philip Wilby's childhood, and this short Partita seeks to commemorate his childish memories in the musical terms of today's currency. Although the music makes technical demands on the players the piece is, nevertheless designed to involve rather than impress its audiences. There are four movements: 'Towers and Chimneys' which is both heraldic and mysterious; 'Churches: Lord of the Dance' is an arrangement of the famous shaker melody made popular in Martin Shaw's hymn of Jesus' life and history; 'Pastorale: Sunday Afternoon recalls those long and languorous days before television, and 'Coronation Day Parade' - a community celebration with a brass band at its centre. Set in the traditional slow, dramatic bolero style, the work builds steadily from a distinctive percussion figure as the melody passes through different instrumental groups. With its growing intensity and rich scoring, this piece offers an engaging and atmospheric addition to concert programmes.2266: Tell the story (Barrie Gott)This work continues the Swing series that began nearly 40 years ago with Light'Walk. After a bold introduction, the melody unfolds through unison and close'harmony writing, leading to a Flugel Horn solo with scope for improvisation. The well'known hymn I Love to Tell the Story is heard in a New Orleans style before a modulation launches an energetic shout chorus and lively coda. Smooth, relaxed swing style is key throughout.2267: The old rugged cross (Erik Leidzn)This arrangement by Erik Leidzn is an early and lesser'known setting of a well'loved hymn, rediscovered during research into his work. Edited from a rare score found in the USA East Music Department archives, it demonstrates Leidzn's economical and effective style, creating a practical and expressive arrangement at a time when concise, serviceable hymn settings were greatly needed.2268: Heaven came down! (Michael Cooper)Inspired by William Booth's famous challenge to use contemporary styles for sacred purpose, this piece blends high'energy jazz'fusion big'band writing with a joyful gospel hymn. Driven by rhythm, syncopation and precision, the music proclaims its message of transformation and spiritual joy with vitality, clarity and infectious swing.

It was written for the 100th anniversary of Camp Gifford in Loon Lake, Washington, therefore included are well-known songs with references to water as the camp is located on the shores of Deer Lake.551: Going Home (Alan Williams)Richard Jukes' song I'm a soldier bound for Glory (S.A.S.B. 856) displays the confidence of someone with a steadfast faith who is certain that by loving and serving their God they will be accepted into his Kingdom. This assurance results in a joyful song of testimony. Whilst not a direct setting of the five verses, the dance-like rhythm of this cha-cha should reflect the positive and encouraging nature of the lyrics and be full of joy and spirit.552: Whosoever will may come (Noel Jones)This is a two-verse arrangement of the song Whosoever will may come (S.A.S.B. 405), with words written by William John McAlonan and music composed by Alfred Braine. This song is included in the Invitation and Challenge section of the song book. The arrangement should be played in a spirited style.553: March - Sing a praise of celebration (Marcus Venables)This music was written at the request of the Singapore Central Corps Band, who asked that the work be based on two specific meaningful melodies. The first is To the Glory and Praise of God by Robert Redhead, a tune rooted in corporate worship and joyful proclamation, calling God's people to lift their voices in thanksgiving. The other is Home, a beloved Singaporean song that speaks of belonging.
