Idyll on an Irish Folk Hymn - Ralph E. Pearce

Idyll on an Irish Folk Hymn was originally written for a concert of Irish music given by the Phoenix-based Salt River Brass. It was made at the request of a close friend of the composer, whose favourite melody this is. I was impressed by the treatment given to this beautiful tune, and when appearing as guest soloist with Salt River Brass, I asked Ralph to rearrange his setting as a cornet solo.Although the origin of the tune is not known, it is most often associated with hymn Lord of all hopefulness, with words by Jan Struther (1901-1953). It is quite often sung at wedding services, immediately after the signing of the register. It speaks of the desire that God goes with the couple into the future, helping them to fulfil their vows.

Over the Stone (Tros y Garreg) - Welsh Traditional

Over the Stone is a traditional Welsh tune: Tros y Garreg. It is not known when it was written, but the sentiment of the tune is attributed to Rhys Bodychen, who led a troop of Welsh forces at the Battle of Bosworth Field where Richard III was defeated by Henry Tudor in 1485.This skilful arrangement for solo euphonium and brass band by Welshman Tony Small was made for David Childs and it can be heard on the CD Celtic Charm (DOYCD214) on which the performers are David Childs and the Cory Band.

Brother James' Air (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Bain, James - Downie, Kenneth

The 'brother James' who wrote this beautiful tune was James Leith Macbeth Bain. He was born in Scotland in 1840 and died in Liverpool in 1925. Besides being a musician, he was a poet, mystic and had a great interest in healing. He published a book called 'The brotherhood of healing' in 1906 and spent the latter years of his life working with the underprivileged in Liverpool. He wrote this simple but charming tune to accompany the familiar paraphrase of Psalm 23 which comes from the Scottish Psalter of 1650; 'The Lord's my shepherd, I'll not want'.

Variations on a Chord (Brass Band - Score and Parts)

Variations on a Chord was composed on the occasion of the second lustrum of the Dutch Brass Band Championships celebrated in 1990. The piece is the immediate sequel to Contrasten a piece which was composed in 1986, and which is performed all over the world. Not only was the final chord of this previous work used as a starting point for the new composition, but Variations on a Chord is also the first concert piece for brass band composed by Jan de Haan since then. The several variations are based on a solemn theme. The so-called minor-major seventh chord is easily detectable. The structure of the piece is such that the lyrical theme is preceded by a majestic introduction, and is followed by eight variations each strongly contrasting in character. The piece finishes in a short but extremely spectacular coda. 11:45

You'll Never Walk Alone (Brass Band - Score only)

This great football anthem (don't be put off if you are not a Liverpool supporter!) was originally featured in the Rogers and Hammerstein musical Carousel, however it was made famous worldwide when it was sung against the background of the Eiffel Tower to close the 1998 World Cup. It can now be performed by your band, with or without football scarves, to end your concert on a winning note. 03:20

Wedding Processional (from The Sound Of Music) - Richard Rodgers - Len Jenkins

My wife Jayne, like many others, is an ardent fan of 'The Sound of Music' and the 'Wedding Processional' was an obvious choice to accompany her procession from the church door to the altar. However, in common with many weddings, ours was in a parish church where the distance was much less than shown in the 1965 movie and space for musicians limited. As a result, we set about producing an arrangement that works for a brass quintet with optional glockenspiel and church organ. It runs for 46 seconds (with optional cut) or 58 seconds. This does not sound very long, but it is surprising how quickly the bride gets to the altar. In common with our developing practice, the arrangement is scored for both Brass Band and Concert Brass instruments. A suggested set-up for the organ is also provided though this will be at the discretion of the organist who will know his instrument and setting more intimately. A slightly larger font has been used for the quintet parts to help where lighting levels may be lower than normal. Graham Cooper

Breath of Souls - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

Breath of Souls was commissioned by Weyland and Yvonne Roberts. It was composed especially for the 100th National Brass band Championships of Great Britain at the Royal Albert hall on October 15th 2011.Weyland has worked in science for many years and has always been fascinated by nature's capacity to grow and rebuild regardless of Mother Nature's catastrophic power. This is evident with the news of tsunami, forest fires, earthquakes and volcanic disasters around the world where animals, plant life and humans have overcome adversity and have demonstrated that unique regenerative quality.Speaking about the piece composer Paul Lovatt-Cooper commented: "With Breath of Souls I wanted to compose a piece of music that was a celebration of life. Not only that, but a piece of music that from the very first notes heard in the percussion and cornets, is bustling with activity, emulating that in life everything that is living has a soul and breathes - nothing stays still and everything keeps moving and growing.Just like life itself Breath of Souls also grows musically with each bar. You will hear many and various motifs and ideas grow and develop as the piece develops."
