Between the Moon and Mexico (Brass Band - Score only) - Sparke, Philip

Between the Moon and Mexico was composed for the 1998 Finals of the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain. The first performance took place at the Royal Albert Hall, London, on the 17th of October. The title has no hidden meaning and was chosen preciesly because it would not predetermine the style or form of the work. The composer wanted to see what sort of piece would emerge if the only influence was what had already been written. The result is a sort of musical collage in which various musical collage in which various musical elements, ranging from two or three notes to complete melodies, assume importance by virtue of their context. In a way, the piece grew out of itself.Duration: 16.30

Brother James' Air (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Bain, James - Downie, Kenneth

The 'brother James' who wrote this beautiful tune was James Leith Macbeth Bain. He was born in Scotland in 1840 and died in Liverpool in 1925. Besides being a musician, he was a poet, mystic and had a great interest in healing. He published a book called 'The brotherhood of healing' in 1906 and spent the latter years of his life working with the underprivileged in Liverpool. He wrote this simple but charming tune to accompany the familiar paraphrase of Psalm 23 which comes from the Scottish Psalter of 1650; 'The Lord's my shepherd, I'll not want'.

    (No Longer A) Silent Night

Music for Brass BandDuration: 4:30 MinutesPercussion: 4 PlayersDrum Kit, Bongos, Tambourine and CowbellAll Rights ReservedProgramme NotesThis carol (one the most popular in the world) was composed in 1818 by Franz Gruber to words by Joseph Mohr. It was first performed on Christmas Eve 1818. This took place in St Nicholas parish church in the village of Oberndorf near Salzburg, Austria. A popular (but spurious) tale tells how the priest Joseph Mohr, whilst making preparations for the Christmas Eve mass, found the church organ to be not working. This supposedly was caused by rats having chewed through the leather bellows of the organ. Joseph Mohr, having previously written the words presented them to Franz Gruber (a local schoolmaster and organist) in the hope that he could set them to music ready for use that same day, but on guitar rather than the broken organ. It is Gruber's distinctive melody and simple harmonic accompaniment that has allowed this carol to become so enduring. My arrangement seeks to turn the serene beauty of this carol on its head !

    Maccabeus

Music for Brass Band Duration: 3:30 Minutes Percussion: 4 PlayersTimpani, Snare Drum, Tubular Bells, Glockenspiel and Crash CymbalsAll Rights ReservedProgramme NotesHandel wrote the 3 act oratorio, Judas Maccabeus, based on a libretto written by Thomas Morell. This oratorio was devised as a compliment to the victorious Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland upon his return from the Battle of Culloden in April 1746. The libretto depicts the period 170-160 BC when Judea was ruled by the Seleucid Empire which undertook to destroy the Jewish religion. Being ordered to worship Zeus, many Jews obeyed under the threat of persecution; however, some did not, one who defied and led through thoughts of liberty and victory was their leader Judas Maccabeus.

Off Duty - John Dankworth - Len Jenkins

The late John Dankworth (1927-2010) made a string of recordings in the 1960s that have since come to be regarded as some of the finest British jazz of their time. Amongst these is his composition 'Off Duty' which was recorded in the 1960s when the influence of pop and rock on jazz was at its height and instruments such as the bass guitar were beginning to be incorporated into jazz's vocabulary. At this time and almost subconsciously, a Dankworth 'pop' style also evolved. This was a balanced marriage between jazz and pop which is here demonstrated in 'Off Duty' thanks to the ingenious and original orchestration by John Dankworth, and the faithful arrangement for Brass Band by one of his fans, Len Jenkins. The title is interesting as John loved to play with words. 'Off Duty' could mean relaxing away from work, but could also carry the implication of something not attracting taxation.... a sort of 'duty-free'. About the same time, the Dave Brubeck Quartet produced the seminal 'Take Five'... so could this be John's take on that title, suggesting a short break? Which meaning fits best for you? The piece would best suit the capabilities of a brass band playing at the standard of Third Section or above.

Wedding Processional (from The Sound Of Musid) - Richard Rodgers - Len Jenkins

My wife Jayne, like many others, is an ardent fan of 'The Sound of Music' and the 'Wedding Processional' was an obvious choice to accompany her procession from the church door to the altar. However, in common with many weddings, ours was in a parish church where the distance was much less than shown in the 1965 movie and space for musicians limited. As a result, we set about producing an arrangement that works for a brass quintet with optional glockenspiel and church organ. It runs for 46 seconds (with optional cut) or 58 seconds. This does not sound very long, but it is surprising how quickly the bride gets to the altar. In common with our developing practice, the arrangement is scored for both Brass Band and Concert Brass instruments. A suggested set-up for the organ is also provided though this will be at the discretion of the organist who will know his instrument and setting more intimately. A slightly larger font has been used for the quintet parts to help where lighting levels may be lower than normal. Graham Cooper

Breath of Souls - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

Breath of Souls was commissioned by Weyland and Yvonne Roberts. It was composed especially for the 100th National Brass band Championships of Great Britain at the Royal Albert hall on October 15th 2011.Weyland has worked in science for many years and has always been fascinated by nature's capacity to grow and rebuild regardless of Mother Nature's catastrophic power. This is evident with the news of tsunami, forest fires, earthquakes and volcanic disasters around the world where animals, plant life and humans have overcome adversity and have demonstrated that unique regenerative quality.Speaking about the piece composer Paul Lovatt-Cooper commented: "With Breath of Souls I wanted to compose a piece of music that was a celebration of life. Not only that, but a piece of music that from the very first notes heard in the percussion and cornets, is bustling with activity, emulating that in life everything that is living has a soul and breathes - nothing stays still and everything keeps moving and growing.Just like life itself Breath of Souls also grows musically with each bar. You will hear many and various motifs and ideas grow and develop as the piece develops."
