Thy Tribute Bring - John Barber

Thy Tribute Bring is a fantasy based on themes from John Goss’s 1869 hymn Praise my Soul the King of Heaven and was written as the finale for Foden’s 2018 Brass in Concert programme. The opening three-note ‘Praise my Soul’ motif in horns and tubular bells leads to the initial presentation of the hymn before the music energetically drives forward, supported by the florid counter melodies and a rhythmic bass line. There is a minor presentation of the theme during which the intermittent percussion line attempts to frustrate and hinder the flow of the music before a calm and reflective slow melody, based on an inversion of the melodic line ‘to thy tribute bring’ is heard in solo cornet. The music concludes with a triumphant and rousing restatement of ‘Praise my Soul’ echoed throughout the band leading to the glorious final climatic chord. Song for the Frontline - John Barber

Song for the Frontline was composed in April 2020 during the UK’s lockdown imposed to limit the spread of the deadly Coronavirus. Amongst many other consequences, the lockdown brought about the end of ensemble rehearsals and as such, Song for the Frontline was released as the third of Foden’s ‘Stay at Home Banding’ performances. Written to help raise funds for the NHS and other frontline services, the music was recorded by band members individually at home with the ‘premiere’ given on Thursday 16th April 2020 alongside a video featuring colleagues working with the Police, Fire services, the NHS and within other frontline roles. The music is a reflective ballad with a catchy motif that unifies the verse, whilst the chorus builds to highlight the emotional context of the time in which it was written. The piece is composed to be accessible both to the listener and performer hopefully allowing all the opportunity to take part and enjoy the music. Also available to purchase in print from(external webpage, opens in new window)

The King of Swing - John Barber

Benny Goodman was an American jazz clarinettist and bandleader known as The King of Swing. Composed for Foden’s Brass in Concert performance in 2018, that year marked the 80th anniversary of Benny Goodman’s legendary debut at New York’s Carnegie Hall. In the country’s most hallowed classical concert hall, this concert was so much more than Benny Goodman; it was, in many ways a ‘debut’ of swing itself, an unprecedented presentation of authentic jazz and racial integration on a stage of unparalleled prestige. The King of Swing is a lively up-tempo tribute to this ground-breaking musician. With the characteristic Gene Krupa drum line and central build section, the full power of the ‘big band’ can be enjoyed as different sections of the band are featured. The music will have both your toes and audience tapping along! Also available to purchase in print from(external webpage, opens in new window)

Coventry Carol - 16th Century English Traditional - John Barber

Coventry Carol dates from the 16th Century. Traditionally sung 'a capella', the carol refers to the Christmas story from chapter two in the Gospel of Matthew and the Massacre of the innocents, in which Herod ordered all male infants under the age of two in Bethlehem to be killed. It takes the form of a lullaby sung by mothers of the doomed children. In this arrangement, the Dies Irae or 'Day of Wrath' theme heard in the introduction lets us know of the impending rage and massacre portrayed in verse three, before the music eventually subsides and resolves with calmness and assuredness with the raised third tierce de Picardy.

Its Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas - Meredith Willson - John Barber

Its Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas was originally a hit for Perry Como and the Fontane Sisters with Mitchell Ayres and his Orchestra in 1951.Composed by Meredith Willson, the popular belief was that Willson wrote the song whilst staying in the Grand Hotel in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.Whilst the arrangement doesn't feature the Fontane sisters, it does seek to capture the full palette of orchestral colour as heard on the 1951 original recording, with tenor horns often playing the part of the female close harmony group.
