    Pageantry - Herbert Howells

    Herbert Howells was born in Gloucestershire in 1892 and, as a youngster, wrote and conducted music for bands in the Forest of Dean, where a strong brass banding tradition still exists. In later life, when an established composer, Howells accepted an invitation to write a test-piece for the 1934 British Open Brass Band Championship. Encouraged by that great friend of the brass band movement, Sir Granville Bantock, he responded with Pageantry, a three movement work, which is still a stiff test for bands today. He undertook the task with great conscientiousness, frequently seeking advice from those more associated with the brass band genre such as Henry Geehl and John Henry Iles. The work was very well received by players and public alike, and still remains part of the core repertoire for brass bands.There are three movements and the first, King's Herald, features fanfares and a demanding animated section. The central slow movement, Cortege, is rather solemn and gives opportunity to display the lyrical qualities of brass instruments. Between February and June 1934, Britain lost three very important musical figures; Elgar, Holst and Delius. Howells was a very sensitive man (as the shattering effect on him of the death of his son revealed two years later) and Elgar had been a particular friend and mentor. It is entirely possible therefore that this elegiac music is a kind of memorial to the great composer - it would have been a very typical gesture. Jousts, which ends the work, is a real tour de force for brass and as tough a challenge as anyone could wish.

    Jamaica - Timothy Travis

    Jamaica is an island in the Caribbean. In 1494 it was discovered by Christopher Columbus, who used it as private property until 1509. After some skirmishes it fell under British rule and the sugar trade on the island flourished. After the abolition of slavery in 1834 it was only granted Home Rule in 1944, but it remained a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations. Whereas the export of cane sugar used to be Jamaica's main export product for many years, nowadays music has taken over this role. At first American music used to be very popular on the island. Later, however, Jamaican musicians started to experiment and thus in the end created their own musical style called Reggae. Well-known Reggae musicians are Bob Marley and Peter Tosh. The most important instruments used in Reggae are the bass and the drums. Together they form the base for the style: the riddim. A bass drum accent on the second and fourth beat are characteristic of a typically reggae drum beat. To this syncopic patterns are often added. The rhythm guitarist plays chords in a characteristic Reggae rhythm, not on, but between the beats.

The arranger has made some very small revisions and corrections and is confident that this new presentation will be very welcome. The manuscript version is now withdrawn.Pines of the Villa Borghese - Children are at play in the pine groves of Villa Borghese; they dance round in circles. They play at soldiers, marching and fighting, excited by their own cries, they come and go in swarms like swallows in the evening.The Pines close to a Catacomb - Suddenly the scene changes -- we see the shades of the pine trees fringing the entrance to a catacomb. From the depth rises the sound of a mournful chant, floating through the air like a solemn hymn, and gradually and mysteriously dispersing.The Pines of the Gianicolo. The evening air is warm: the pine-trees of the Janiculum hill stand distinctly outlined in the clear light of the full moon as it looks out over the city of Rome below. A nightingale is heard singing.Pines of the Appian Way - It's a misty dawn on the Appian Way, solitary pine trees guarding the landscape. The muffled, marching tread of footsteps becomes louder and louder. Trumpets sound and, in the brilliance of the newly-risen sun, a consular army marches forth along The Sacred Way, finally ascending in triumph to the Capitol to celebrate "A Triumph."

    Monteverdi Three Miniatures

    "Monteverdi - 3 Miniatures" was composed for the British Open Youth at the Guild 2015 by Adam Taylor. The piece uses small themes from a variety of works by Claudio Monteverdi presented in a modern and (hopefully!) suitable manner for brass band. A few notes on the work: i) Tempos may be adapted to suit your interpretation of the music. ii) The second miniature features a duet. You will find the parts for this duet seperate in both Bb and Eb. Please feel free to choose your own soloists for this section. iii) I have included 3 written percussion parts. Please feel free to add any other suitable percussive sounds if your section is large enough (tambourines, tenor drums, hand bells etc.), or if limited in numbers, do not worry about leaving parts out. iv) Feel free to add any ornamentation you or your players feel suitable and complimentary to the music. v) No sackbut's or Renaissance cornett's allowed. I very much hope you will enjoy playing this piece, and for those in your ensembles who have not yet heard the music of Monteverdi, I hope this piece may serve as a good taster and a fitting educational tool as a small insight into the music of the late Renaissance/ early Baroque period.

    Brass Triumphant - Gareth Wood

    Brass Triumphant is a four-movement work and was composed for the Cory Band during their 125th anniversary year of 2009.The first movement is a celebratory fanfare featuring a strong melody as the thread which runs throughout the whole work. The second movement is powerful in nature and reflects struggle and endeavour. The third movement is a beautiful slow melodic poem subtitled Mist of the Forest. A melody carried by the euphonium honours the great Welsh folk melodies we all know and love. The lollipop finale is a rollercoaster ride, taking us to the very edge of band technique. The hymn tune O Iesu Mawr appears though heavily disguised and is a reminder of the composer's Welsh Heritage.The Cory Band under Dr. Robert Childs gave the World premiere of this work during the World Music Contest Gala Concert in Kerkrade, Netherlands July 2009. It later received its British premiere during September of the same year in Birmingham's Symphony Hall, again performed by the Cory Band under the direction of Robert Childs.

    In Pitch Black - Lucy Pankhurst

    An extremely emotional and poignant work for brass band composed by Lucy Pankhurst, in memory and tribute to those affected by the Pretoria Pit disaster in Lancashire on 21st December 1910. The piece is chilling in its depiction of the tragic story, sensitively conveying the atmosphere and emotions as perceived before, during and after the event. Through its use of playing techniques, effects, sound combinations and even silences, In Pitch Black offers a powerfully reflective piece.Pritoria Pit DisasterLancashire’s worst pit disaster and Britain’s third largest loss of life from a single mining accident happened at the No. 3 Bank Pit belonging to the Hulton Colliery Company, just 4 days before Christmas 1910. The pit known as the 'Pretoria Pit' was situated on Hulton Parkland on the border of Atherton and Westhoughton. An explosion occurred at 7.50 am on Wednesday, 21 December 1910, resulting in the death of 344 men and boys, including many members of The Wingates Band.The Writing ExperienceDuring Lucy's research for this work, she acknowledges that she found the harsh reality from the shocking images and historical accounts of the event most disturbing, and is not embarrassed to disclose that it was wholly a very emotional experience in creating the composition. Consequently, she chose to create something to illustrate the true emotion of the situation. She wanted to pay tribute to the lives lost and the devastation which remained in their absence, by creating a piece of music which begins in darkness; desolate and claustrophobic, whilst still leaving the audience feeling uplifted and thoughtful in the final bars.The significance and musical appreciation for the creation of In Pitch Black was formally recognised by BASCA in 2011, when Lucy Pankhurst won the internationally acclaimed British Composer Award (the first time a brass band work had received the award, and the first time a female composer had won the category).Full programme notes are included in the product images.Look and Listen (performance courtesy of Manchester University Brass Band):

    Masquerade - Score and Parts - Philip Wilby

    The first performance took place on the 4th. September 1993 at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester during the British Open Brass Band Championships.Note by Philip Wilby:Masquerade is a centenary tribute to Verdi’s last opera Falstaff and takes its final scene as the basis for my own piece. Thus I have used some of Verdi’s music, and some of Shalespeare’s plot, and woven them into a fabric with highly demanding music of my own to produce a work in the great tradition of operatically-based brass band pieces. Such scores date from the very beginnings of band repertory and are often not direct arrangements in the established sense but new compositions produced in homage to a past master. They may still offer performers and audience alike something familiar interwoven with something new. My own piece reuses some elements from the original story:• . .Falstaff has been caught in a web of his own lies by the ladies of the town, who propose to teach him a lesson. The story opens at night in Windsor Great Park. The plotters, variously disguised in Hallowe’en fashion (as fairies,elves hobgoblins etc!) assemble in the park to await Falstaff’s arrival (musicologists will, perhaps, note a rare use of ‘large bottle in F’ being used during this scene of suppressed alcoholic revelry!). Falstaff’s companions, Bardolph,Piston and Robin, enter (represented here by the three trombones!), and are variously abused by the masqueraders. At the height of the Tout an alarm sounds and Falstaff (euphonium cadenza) enters as Midnight strikes. From a safe hiding place he watches as the disguised Nanetta (principal comet) sings a serene solo as the moon appcars above the trees. With sudden force the others seize him and drag him from his hiding place. As in the traditional game ‘Blind Man’s Buff’, he is roughly turned seven times (a sequence of solo accelerandi) until, at last, he recognizes his assailants as his sometime friends. Far from complaining, Verdi’s character concludes the opera with a good-humoured fugue on the words.... ‘All the World’s a Joke... Every mortal laughs at the others, But he laughs best who has the final laugh. Philip Wilby.
