A Poem against War A Poem against War was commissioned by Psalm 150, Dinxperlo for the project Leven in Vrijheid!.Starting point of the composition of this piece was the poem A Poem against War from the American poet Karen Kapowich. The poem tells of young lives that are broken in their start because of war.A monument - founded in memory of the soldiers who gave their lives - is hardly noticed and even ignored. Children find the tree-sheltered memorial place rather scary and even the narrator speeds up his stride when passing. Underlying theme is the otiosity of war.The musical piece is composed of two parts that are being played without interruption. The first part explains the drama of the battle. The second part is based on the poem of Karen Karpowich in which we look back on the sacrifices that have been made. The text is sung by a Mezzo Soprano and emphasizes the bloodshed that comes along with every war. The opening theme returns at the end of the piece but in a complete metamorphosis, wherein optimism and vigor take place for resignation knowing that history repeats itself time and time again. A Poem against War had its premiere on 25th November 2012 in de DRU Cultuurfabriek in Ulft by Fanfare-orchestra Psalm 150, Dinxperlo led by Tijmen Botma. COMPOSER: Charles StanfordARRANGER: Neil LockTo celebrate the planned re-opening of St. Mary's Church, Liss, 2020In 1909, Charles Villiers Stanford composed the chant to which the last psalm in the book, Psalm 150, is now usually sung. This is a free arrangement of that tune for brass band, which can be used either as a stand-alone piece or as an encore, particularly at the end of a concert in a church. I use some of Stanford's original harmonies, but most of the chords are my own.At the beginning and end, imagine the band playing at one end of a cathedral. After the first, very loud phrase, we hear the sound reflected back from the far end. The fast main section is divided into six "verses" as follows:Praise him in the cornets and trumpets;Praise him in the horns and baritones;Praise him in the deepest basses,And praise him in the trombones;Praise him in the loud percussion,And in the euphoniums.This piece was first played in public as part of the Liss Band's first formal post-COVID concert, in St. Mary's Church, Liss on July 16th, 2022.Suitable for most bandsLM469ISMN : 9790570004690

This is a splendid choral in which the Dutch historical song 'Merck toch hoe sterk' is skillfully arranged. This composition was commissioned by Hendry van Loo and written by Alfred Willering for a symphonic wind orchestra. The premiere took place during the jubilee concert celebrating the 60th anniversary of Henk van Loo Sr.'s conductorship, performed by Wilhelmina Glanerbrug under the direction of Hendry van Loo.
