£37.95Four Etudes (Brass Band - Score only) - Gregson, Edward
This work was written during August and September 2016. In it, I wanted primarily to explore the elements of timbre, rhythm, texture and colour. The first three tudes (or studies) are based on a set of piano pieces I composed in 1982, whilst the last, the longest of the set, was composed specially. My reference point was the Four tudes for orchestra of 1928 by Stravinsky, a work I have always admired, and of which the first three also happen to be based on a set of earlier pieces, in his case for string quartet, with the last being a re-arrangement of a work for pianola. I have also borrowed the titles he gave to the individual studies as they seemed to fit the mood of my pieces.However, the exception is the final study, where instead of the exuberant mood of his colourful portrayal of Madrid, mine was influenced by the terrible human tragedy that was unfolding in Aleppo at the time I was writing it, and thus reflects the violence and barbarism of those events; yet towards the end it does offer a glimmer of hope for humanity with a return to the Canticle (Song) of the first study, and concludes quietly with the chords and bells that began the work. The titles of the tudes are Canticle, Dance, Excentrique, and Aleppo. Like Stravinsky's, the set is relatively short, lasting around 8 minutes.The Four tudes were commissioned by Black Dyke Band and were written specially for the recording marking the conclusion of my year as Composer-in-Residence. Just based on its title, this piece has to be celebratory and up-beat, which it is! It opens with a stately fanfare, first played on the low brass before the entire band joins in. This gives way to a contrasting lyrical theme which develops until it joins up with the fanfare to complete the opening section. A lively and heavily syncopated vivo follows, cast as a traditional march, complete with a 'bass strain' and trio. After the original march theme returns, a climax leads back to a reprise of the majestic opening, which brings the piece to an appropriately triumphant close.Duration: 7:30

A condensed score is included with this workGregson wrote his Prelude and Capriccio in 1972. It exists in two versions: one for cornet and band and the other for cornet or trumpet and piano.The work began life in the early sixties, the Capriccio being composed when the composer was 17. A Prelude was added to complete the work, which lasts for approximately 8 minutes. The Prelude is reflective in character and uses long melodic lines over undulating chromatic harmony. The music reaches a climax before a brief reprise of the opening. The Capriccio is somewhat jazzy in its opening syncopated rhythms, but has a more lyrical middle section before a finale exploiting the virtuoso character of the instrument.

This arrangement by Ruben Schmidt is the exciting polonaise finale from the last movement of Tchaikovsky's thrilling Suite No.3 in G Major for Orchestra. This was first performed in Saint Petersburg on January 12th, 1885, at the fifth symphony concert of the Russian Musical Society, conducted by Hans von Bulow. The suite also was Tchaikovsky's first American success when it was performed by the New York Symphony Society at Carnegie Hall on May 7,1891. First intended as its own symphony, it became the most played and most successful of Tchaikovsky's four suites. The finale of the last movement is an invigorating polonaise dance to finish the suite. Tchaikovsky often enjoyed conducting this final movement as an independent work himself. It tells the story of a group of children in medieval Provence, dressed up as shepherds and milkmaids, carrying torches and candles as they proceed to the stable. As they draw closer and their excitement increases, they are constantly reminded by their parents to keep the noise down so that they don't wake up the baby Jesus. The music begins quietly and builds to a majestic conclusion. Released as a charity single in aid of The Queen's Commonwealth Trust, this sublime work was composed by Debbie Wiseman OBE and performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II after her death in September 2022. This tender and contemplative piece was played many times during the BBC's live coverage of the ceremonies across ten days of national mourning; and the full three-minute piece was played at the end of the Queen's State funeral, following Kirsty Young's emotional final words, and accompanied by a poignant and beautiful montage of images from the events of the day. The piece is now available for brass bands through this arrangement by Andrew Wainwright and Glenn Greet, with permission kindly granted by Debbie Wiseman. VIEW SCORE PDF This arrangement of the popular carol Ding Dong Merrily on High is the first published work by BrookWright Music of English arranger Stephen Tighe. This accessible setting receives a fresh, rhythmic treatment, aided by the use of sleigh bells and tubular bells. The tune itself first appeared as a secular dance tune known under the title Branle de l'Official in Orchesographie, a dance book written by the French cleric, composer and writer Jehan Tabourot (1519-1593). The carol was first published in 1924 in his The Cambridge Carol-Book: Being Fifty-two Songs for Christmas, Easter, and Other Seasons. Woodward took an interest in church bell ringing, which no doubt aided him in writing it. The macaronic style is characteristic of Woodward's delight in archaic poetry.
