The 'Indian Summer' is that of North America, and the music, entertaining but more than half serious, will perhaps evoke memories of tales of Native Americans.There are four movements:The Great Chief SpeaksBy the Cool WatersTotem DanceHymn to the Great SpiritProgramme Notes:This Fantasy is in the form of a Suite, although there should be no long break between each movement. The composer sometimes concocts a little story to illustrate the music, somewhat as follows:"The Great Chief Speaks": the warmth of Autumn's "Indian Summer" will soon be a memory, and hard Winter will set in; so the Chief must hold a great Powwow with his people"By the Coll Waters": a little girl, not interested in grown-up solemnities, slips away to a nearby lake. She gazes at her reflection in the water; executes a little dance, then falls to dreaming."Totem Dance": this will be exciting - the little girl goes running to see! The dancing becomes wilder, then rhythm more insistent, then suddenly silence."Hymn to the Great Spirit": the Powwow closes with a majestic utterance by the Great Chief. A hymn is sung to the "Great White Spirit", and the people turn their thoughts to preparations for the coming Winter.

Inchcolm is an island in the Forth estuary first visited by St Columba in 567 and mentioned in Shakespeare's Macbeth. The ruins of Columba's abbey are regularly shrouded in mist and bring with it a flavour of mystery and legend. Composer and distinguished French horn player Terry Johns (Drac to his friends) was commissioned to write this work for Superbrass and their water influenced 2nd album, Brass Taps. Drac requested that he be allowed to write a solo feature with a proper tune for horn. Kingdom Brass in Scotland premiered Inchcolm in its new brass band form and the solo part is playable by either a tenor or french horn player. Duration: 5.00. Suitable for 2nd Section Bands and above.

The Pentacle is an image of an up-right five-pointed star drawn inside a circle with a single continuous line making the five points equally spaced. Traditionally, each of the five angles has been attributed to the five metaphysical elements of the ancients. These provide the titles for the five sections of he piece: Earth (representing stability and physical endurance), Wind (representing intelligence and the arts), Fire (representing courage and daring), Water (representing emotions and intution) and Quintessence (which represents the All and the Divine spirit).Duration: 13.00

Thames Journey is a 10-minute musical journey that follows the river Thames from its origins, as a few drops of water in Wiltshire, to the point where it meets the open sea at Greenwich. Along the way, Hess draws upon many musical links along the Thames, such as an old Wiltshire melody, morris dancing in Oxfordshire, boating songs from Berkshire and street songs in London. With such rich and diverse sources of music across several counties and centuries, this has quite understandably become one of Hess's most popular works to date. This piece was commissioned to be performed on the Georgian barge as part of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Pageant. Inspired by the "Gigue" (sometimes referred to as "Country Dance") in Handel's original Water Music, the piece has a rollicking, upbeat feel and is now newly arranged for brass band. The story that inspired the piece is of a pirate ship attacking the flotilla. The pirates are then confronted by the courageous defenders of the flotilla who are, of course triumphant in the end. The piece concludes with a final defiant statement of the heroic theme, and the pirates are gone forever.
