The Wexford Carol is a traditional Irish Christmas carol that originated in County Wexford in the 19th century. The carol tells the story of the birth of Jesus Christ and the journey of the Magi to Bethlehem. It is written in a simple and elegant style, and its melody is both beautiful and haunting. This arrangement is a lush and evocative setting of the traditional carol. Written at the request of Bandmaster Christopher Ward and the Eastern Michigan Divisional Band of The Salvation Army (USA), it was premiered at the 2019 Autumn Praise Festival in Rochester, Michigan which featured the Eastern Michigan Divisional Band and Choir, and the Chicago Staff Band. This arrangement by Thomas Hulten of the beloved spiritual Down by the Riverside was born out of a special request from a Danish friend of the arranger - a bass trombonist - who wanted a solo piece to perform alongside his pianist wife at their local Salvation Army corps. Long familiar to traditional jazz players, the tune is often passed around informally, shaped by the spirit of the moment. But here, at last, it has found its way onto the page. Set in a relaxed swing style, this version invites performers to settle into a steady, unhurried groove. While arranged for both tenor and bass trombone, the piece is flexible enough to be played on a wide range of low brass and wind instruments - baritone, euphonium, tuba, sousaphone, serpent, ophicleide, bass sackbut, contrabassoon - whatever is at hand. The Tubby Butcher is a vibrant and fresh take on a classic brass piece. The composer writes: 'For several years I used to play school concerts around Houston with our brass quintet. We followed a familiar formula; showing the kids how the instruments work and have a feature piece for each one. The tuba player played The Happy Farmer from Robert Schumann's Album fur die Jugend, a very dull arrangement of a dull piece. It bugged me so much I had to come up with something more exciting, hence The Tubby Butcher. Friends of mine have played this and tried to set speed records - I like it a little bit slower with a more 60s vibe, like the video we made with the Gothenburg Opera low brass (featured below). Straight 8s, not swing. Drums are not required but a welcome addition. There is an optional 2nd trombone part if needed.' The Descent takes its inspiration from Victorian author Jules Verne; specifically, his work Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. In Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Professor Arronax finds himself a prisoner of the mysterious Captain Nemo, on a remarkable submarine called the Nautilus. Nemo is one of Verne's most memorable characters. He's a man who has turned his back on the world, and his name - Nemo - means 'No Man.' He has vowed never to set foot on dry land ever again. Verne gives his hero's brilliance and benevolence a dark underside - the man's obsessive hate for Empires and Imperialism. Captain Nemo is a genius, an engineer, an artist, an athlete, sometimes a pacifist, sometimes a righter of wrongs, sometimes an out and out villain, and he invented the Nautilus. The Descent is based on the idea of a descent to the depths of the ocean in the Nautilus with Captain Nemo, with the cornet soloist expressing both the anguish and reflective sides of the character. On one hand, a troubled and agitated figure, juxtaposed with the reflective memories of his homeland, children, mother and father. The work was written for and commissioned by Flowers Band as part of their programme of music at Brass in Concert 2019.

In a career that's spanned over five decades, composer John Williams has scored fewer than five Westerns which, judging from his exemplary work on this 1972 score The Cowboys, seems something of a shame. Battle is the third movement of the suite War of the Worlds which was commissioned by the Senzoku Gakuen College of MusicSaxophone Orchestra and first performed by them in the Maeda Hall, Japan on June 29 2012, the composer conducting. The music is dedicatedto Professor Shin-ichi Iwamoto. The transcription for brass band was first performed by the Brighouse & Rastrick Band,conductor David King, in the Bridgewater Hall Manchester on September 8 2012.
