This classic song has been entertaining audiences around the globe since it was originally written back in 1977. It didn't reach world-wide success until the piece was recorded by artist Bette Midler and featured in the film, The Rose. Songwriter, Amanda McBroom recalls that she wrote the piece in just 45 minutes. The work has now been arranged as a gorgeous Euphonium solo with lower brass (flugelhorn down the band) accompaniment and is a great new addition to a soloist's repertoire. The work is not technically demanding and the lyrical tone of the piece is one that will allow players of all ages to shine with this solo. This special new release is a specially commissioned arrangement by Andi Cook for the Grimethorpe Colliery Band and in particular, their soprano cornet player, Kevin Crockford. Recorded and released on the bands new CD "Grimethorpe By Request", this lively piece of music from "The Merry Widow" is within the reach of most soprano players and is not too technically challenging. A certain delight for the audience and a welcome addition to any soprano cornet player's repertoire.

Fakenham Fair - Traditional - A. Cook
The origins of the song Fakenham Fair are somewhat obscure. It was collected by Peter Bellamy, who performed it unaccompanied on his first solo LP, "Mainly Norfolk" in 1968, giving credit to a Peter Bullen of Norwich from whom he had learned it, Bullen in turn giving credit to his grandfather. But beyond that, other than it definitely being a Norfolk folk song, the rest is a mystery.Over the years, Fakenham Fair has become a firm favourite among folk audiences, probably the most famous version being the 2008 recording by folk supergroup 'Bellowhead' which this setting for brass band pays tribute to. A bright, quirky, and bouncy 5:4/10:8 waltz, the band parts dance back and forth from simple time to compound time and back again, giving a constant flow that somehow always feels natural despite the irregular rhythm... but which will also keep your audience guessing where the beat will land next! With solos and features for principal chairs around the band, nobody is left out of the fun. Engaging to listen to and even more so to play, Fakenham Fair is a perfect light concert item for the band that likes to show off their rhythmic and lyrical sides at the same time.

Triumphant - Bill Willis
TriumphantThis is a bright concert march in a traditional style and should pose no problems for the majority of bands.The first half of the march moves between the related keys of A min and C majThe march starts with a bold opening 2 bar statement in A min. At B the rhythm from the middle of the band should not be allowed to slow the pace of the march. C sees a majestic bass melody from Baritones downwards moving to D where a repeat of the original theme is presented before moving to the TRIO section. This moves between the related keys of F maj and D min. The melody heard at E is repeated at G with a florid counter-melody heard from 1st Baritone and Euphonium leading to the finish.

Aberystwyth - Joseph Parry - Ed Keeley
This arrangement is based on the famous Welsh hymn tune Aberystwyth by Joseph Parry. Composed in the late nineteenth century whilst Parry was Professor of Music at Aberystwyth University. The tune is a powerful example of the expressive style of Welsh chapel music.Most widely known today as the setting for Charles Wesley's hymn "Jesus, Lover of My Soul," the melody is notable for its haunting minor key, sweeping phrases and dramatic climax. These qualities translate naturally to the warm, resonant and warm timbre of the brass band.This setting seeks to capture both the solemn dignity and emotional depth of the original tune. Rich harmonic textures and the sonorous colours of the brass band highlight the melody's expressive contours, building towards a broad and noble climax while preserving the reflective and haunting character of the hymn.

Marianne - Martin Bunce
Written in 1974, Marianne is a beautifully lyrical flugelhorn ballad by Martin Bunce, now newly arranged by the composer for brass band.Originally written during a particularly romantic period in Bunce's life, the piece was first performed on the BBC Two television programme In Concert by the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, with Martin himself featured as the flugelhorn soloist. A recording was subsequently released by RCA on 45rpm, and Marianne gradually became an established and much-loved part of the NYJO repertoire. It has since appeared on several of the orchestra's recordings, including the four-CD collection The Very Best of NYJO.The melody has also found a home in the brass band world, notably through Maurice Murphy's recording with the Leyland Band on The Lighter Side of Maurice Murphy. This new brass band arrangement places the flugelhorn's distinctive warm and mellow tone firmly at the heart of the music, supported by sympathetic and accessible scoring throughout the band.Neither the solo part nor the accompaniment is excessively demanding, making Marianne an excellent choice for a wide range of bands and an ideal contrast item for concert programmes. Warm, expressive and immediately appealing, it offers the flugelhorn soloist an opportunity to shine while giving audiences a memorable melody to take away.A charming addition to any brass band library, Marianne is particularly well suited to concerts, solo features and lighter programmes.
