Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) wrote a lot of songs, several of which Jacob de Haan has arranged for ensemble of variable strength. The songs are: Fremad! Fremad!, Stille Nu! and Fola, Fola, Blakken. It has been arranged for beginner bands and can be played with a minimum of four players (+ percussion).

Originally written for piano, this lovely, tender lullaby has been arranged by Tom Brevik for brassband and four solo instruments: Cornet, Flugel, Tenor Horn and Euphonium. Ole Olsen (4 juli 1850 - 4 november 1927) was een Noors componist, organist, dirigent en militaire muzikant. Oorspronkelijk geschreven voor piano,werd dit mooie, tedere slaapliedje gearrangeerd door Tom Brevik voor brassband en 4 solo instrumenten: Cornet, Flugel, Hoorn en Euphonium.

Northern Landscapes - Peter Graham
The four movements of Northern Landscapes provide musical mood pictures of various aspects of Northern working life. 1) Industry opens the suite with the bustle of factory machinery, followed attacca by 2) Seascapes which evokes the calmness of local waters during a fishing expedition. 3) Earth Dance references the mining industry where the blackness of the environment is mirrored by the darkness of the music while 4) Flight evokes the path of an aircraft on its maiden journey in this tribute to the aircraft industry. Northern Landscapes has its origins in music written for the Ulster Orchestra Brass Quintet. This revised and updated version for brass band was commissioned by the Boarshurst (Greenfield) Silver Band, with National Lottery funds, supported by the Arts Council of England. It was set as the 2003 National Brass Band Championships Area Third Section Test-Piece.

This composition, based on the hymn Praise to the Lord, is comprised of eight separate parts that can be played together as a concert piece or opening work. The A and B sections are different openings, C is four-part arrangement of the hymn, D is a solo for four saxophones, or two trumpets and two trombones, E is a calm intermezzo, F a solo for trumpet or cornet, and G and F finally are a majestic or peaceful closing section. The Star and a Rose is a big-scale Christmas piece for band, featuring four seasonal chorales.The first is a Gregorian-like chant Hodie Christus natus est.In this section of the piece, a soloist can be placed away from the band, maybe on a gallery. The soloist can be a tenor instrument, maybe trombone, or you can feature a vocal soloist.After this, the music leads us on to the old German Christmas chorale Lo, how a rose e'er blooming. This song is given a fairly rhythmical treatment, but make sure that the melody is presented in a cantabile style.An interlude follows, before the piece presents one of the most used and loved Scandinavian Christmas chorales, Mitt hjerte alltid vanker (My Heart will always wander), composed by the Danish bishop Hans Adolph Brorson around 1732. This song is building towards a climax, before the solo horn brings it all down to the Stable view described in the lyrics.Then comes a transition that brings us in to the final section of the piece, which presents the international Christmas Carol Adeste Fideles. As many will notice, I have borrowed a section from David Wilcocks majestic harmonization towards the end.The title of the piece has its background form the lyrics in My heart will always wander, where the text speaks about the stars in the sky. But also in the latin text for Adeste Fideles:Stella duce, Magi, Christum adorantesThe Rose is of course from the lyrics in the chorale Lo, how a Rose.

Over a period of four decades Jimmy Webb (b. 1946) has written hits for a number of singers including Glen Campbell, Art Garfunkel, Frank Sinatra, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Linda Ronstadt. His songs are often epic in character and include By the Time I Get to Phoenix; Up, Up and Away; Didn't We; Wichita Lineman and Galveston. MacArthur Park (1968) was unlike anything that had gone before it. Running at over 7 minutes, it is 2 or 3 times the length of most pop songs and has an extended orchestral interlude. Richard Harris' seminal recording topped the music charts in Europe, while peaking at number two on the U.S. charts. Philip Sparke has made this excellentarrangement for brass band, which is sure to become a regular feature on your concert programme.
