£44.43Abberline (Euphonium Solo with Brass Band) Karl Whelan
Inspired by the infamous investigation into Jack the Ripper, Abberline follows Detective Inspector Frederick Abberline through the mist-shrouded streets of Victorian London in his desperate pursuit of a killer who remains forever just out of reach. Scored for brass band and solo euphonium, the piece blends atmospheric textures, shifting musical identities, and virtuosic demands to capture a narrative that is as haunting as it is unresolved. The piece opens in a world of shadows - the foggy alleys of Whitechapel - where tension simmers beneath the surface. The euphonium enters cautiously, as if stalking unseen figures, echoing the danger and uncertainty that cloaked the city in fear. This eerie calm is broken suddenly: the Ripper strikes. The moment is brief but brutal, leaving only silence and horror in its wake. From here, the music shifts into an uneasy, angular waltz: the figure of Abberline takes center stage, portrayed by the soloist as he investigates the aftermath. The waltz is melodically off-kilter and harmonically unstable, capturing both the grotesque nature of the crime and the detective's mental burden. The scene then returns to the streets - but this time, the musical material is more intricate, fragmented, and tense. The threat has deepened, and again the silence is shattered by violence. A second, slightly altered waltz follows, further reflecting Abberline's obsessive descent into the case. In the final section, the chase begins in earnest. Themes from earlier return in quick succession, intensified and overlapping as time runs out. The ancient Dies Irae chant is woven into the texture, evoking fate and judgment. In a final, erratic surge, the euphonium and band race toward an ending that is breathless and unresolved - a reflection of history's unanswered questions and the ghost that always stayed one step ahead. This stunning arrangement of O Holy Night, showcases the lyrical and expressive potential of the Flugel Horn or Trumpet, arranged by acclaimed jazz composer Tom Kubis and transcribed by Dave Collins. Originally made famous by the legendary Wayne Bergeron with the Tom Kubis Big Band, this arrangement has since become a favourite among brass soloists worldwide. It received its concert premiere with the North York Temple Band (Canada) under Bandmaster Glenn Barlow, featuring the virtuosic talents of Marcus and Harrington Venables. The piece was later recorded by the International Staff Band, conducted by Dr. Stephen Cobb, on their 2016 album Celebrate the Season. The featured soloist on that recording was the world-renowned Philip Cobb. This arrangement offers flexible performance options - it can be presented as a solo feature or as a duet for Flugel Horn and Soprano Cornet (cued into the parts), making it ideal for both concert settings and festive performances. £33.32Adoration (Cornet Solo with Brass Band) Florence Price trs. Andrew Wainwright
Florence Price was an American classical composer, pianist, organist and music teacher. She is noted as the first African-American woman to be recognised as a symphonic composer, and the first to have a composition played by a major orchestra. Price composed over 300 works: four symphonies, four concertos, as well as choral works, art songs, chamber music and music for solo instruments. In 2009, a substantial collection of her works and papers that had been previously considered lost was found in her abandoned summer home. Amongst these was this delightful work, Adoration, which had been composed in the 1950s for organ. According to IMSLP.org, the piece "failed to meet notice or renewal requirements to secure statutory copyright with no 'restoration' under the GATT amendments" and therefore is in the public domain. A version for violin and piano by Elaine Fine has become popular. This setting for cornet soloist with brass band has been arranged by Andrew Wainwright. Sunset was written in June 2023 as a graduation present for the composer's son Callum and is dedicated to him. It portrays an older father (the composer) reminiscing about the love, respect and pride he has for his grown-up son and all that he has achieved and worked for. Sunset is lyrical and song-like in style. A soaring solo line is accompanied by a mainly homophonic background which should support, but never overpower the soloist. The tutti sections feature the melody accompanied by flowing scalic figures which portray the passing of time. The piece ends with an ad lib cadenza section where the soloist can really put their own mark on the music. Andrew Batterham's tour de force Trumpet Concerto showcases the incredible spectrum of emotions the trumpet can convey, in the hands of a dedicated performer. The music ranges from Classical to minimalism, ballads to fanfares, culminating in a wild dance full of stamina and energy. Commissioned by ABC Classic through the ABC Fresh Start Fund, Concerto was premiered by David Elton, Principal Trumpet with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra (previously with London Symphony Orchestra). This brass band version was premiered by David and Victoria Brass, conducted by Matt van Emmerik. £33.32'Mid all the traffic (Brass Band) Traditional arr. Andy Wareham
This stunning arrangement by British composer Andy Wareham is of the popular hymn 'Mid all the Traffic, which marries the North-American folksong Shenandoah set to lyrics by English journalist, novelist and poet William Arthur Dunkerley (written under the pseudonym of 'John Oxenham'). The hymn is very well-regarded in both the Salvation Army and wider brass band movement thanks to a popular arrangement by renowned Salvationist composer Leonard Ballantine. The arranger writes: 'This setting of 'Mid All The Traffic was originally composed during the Covid-19 pandemic as an octet arrangement for single instrument. My hope was to create an arrangement that offers an alternative view on harmony and could be multi-track recorded; allowing performers to give, and share, a performance whilst in isolation. The music was written in dedication to all of the 'key-workers' in the UK, especially in the NHS, who worked tirelessly throughout difficult conditions during the Covid-19 pandemic.' Felix Mendelssohn's stunning Choral Cantata has here been adapted to the brass band by Edward Mylechreest. A setting of Martin Luther's sacred words, this short piece is a staple of the choral canon and is widely regarded as a choral masterpiece. The hymn tune melody repeats three times throughout the piece (first from the trombones, then the horns, followed by a full band chorale), each time an emploring prayer and statement of the text. This arrangement can also be used for accompaniment to the original Chorale, remaining in the original Eb major key signature. Knowledge of the original piece will be of great benefit to the performer and conductor alike. VIEW SCORE PDF Cornish Fantasy was written for Kidlington Concert Brass's euphonium soloist Benjamin Abbott to perform in their Autumn 2021 series of concerts and contests. Based around a series of Cornish folk tunes, it pays tribute to Ben's Cornish roots, and in particular to his banding education with the Camborne Town Band. The solo opens with the 'unofficial Cornish anthem' Trelawny, which is followed with a series of virtuoso cadenzas. After these is an up-tempo jig in several segments, containing the traditional tunes Camborne Hill, Pendeen Jig, Newlyn Jig, Pencarrow, and Off She Goes, the latter two at a breakneck pace that carries through to a triumphant close. VIEW SCORE PDF Nocturne for Brass Band & Percussion: The Lady with the Lamp was composed for the BrookWright International Brass Band Composer Competition 2020, the work later going on to be a finalist in the competition. The music celebrates the life and achievements of Florence Nightingale on the 200th anniversary of her birth. The work is structured in ternary form and is designed to be an engaging concert piece, accessible to both lower and upper section bands. Minimal percussion has been used and ossia passages have been added to accommodate all levels. The music imagines Miss Nightingale walking the wards at night with the contrasting sections representing her devotion to the care of others, the struggles and sacrifice of her service, and the lasting effect of her renowned achievements that are still felt to this day.
