DescriptionCanzonetta is a tenor horn solo with optional brass band or piano accompaniment.Canzonetta was one of my earliest compositions, written in my early days as an undergraduate. Along with a companion piece called Caprice it was written for an old friend, Louise Hunt (now Louise Skillander), to whom it is dedicated. We had both been in the Northop Youth Band together, and both pieces were the result of a conversation about the lack of 'good tenor horn solos' for lower section and youth players at the time.With more mature consideration the Caprice has been consigned to the dustbin of history, but the simplicity of Canzonetta has allowed it to stand the test of time with a few minor scoring revisions.Performance Notes:Percussion instruments required are 2 x timpani, glockenspiel, suspended cymbal, concert bass drum (NOT a kit/pedal bass drum) and tam-tam. Cityscape was commissioned for the 't Stad Geblazen event, which took place during the weekend of European Heritage Days in 2024.This short concert piece describes the impressions given when approaching and visiting the beautiful Belgian city of Antwerp from the north across the river Scheldt. We first pass the busy bustle of the harbour, home to the impressive Port House. Then the old city comes into view: the graceful cathedral tower, surrounded by smaller church spires and modern buildings, dominates the distinctive skyline. After setting foot ashore, we are struck by the beautiful way the medieval buildings here blend harmoniously with modern architecture. Our walk through the city continues: we visit the serene cathedral and are impressed by the picturesque facades of and around the city hall, as well as the Brabo Fountain on the Grote Markt (Large Market Square). Finally, it is time to enjoy the merriment taking place on the many squares of the lively city centre.Duration: 5.30

Frenchman Jules Verne was a pioneer in science fiction during the late 19th Century, penning some classic stories such as Journey to the Centre of the Earth and Around the World in 80 Days - both of which have already been the subject of brass band test-pieces. It was therefore natural for me to choose Verne's 1869 watery magnum opus as the subject for this piece to which there are five sections, as well as an introduction and a finale.THE NAUTILUS. After a mysterious introduction we are introduced to The Nautilus - a fantastical submarine.THE CORAL KINGDOM. We visit awe-inspiring underwater coral formations.SQUID ATTACK. The Nautilus is attacked by a school of giant squid, or 'devilfish'.CAPTAIN NEMO. Captain Nemo is a loner and an eccentric. Some say he is a madman. Soloists of the band help to uncover the character of this enigmatic but powerful figure.MAELSTROM. The Nautilus is dragged into the ocean's deadliest whirlpool but Captain Nemo lives to fight another day.Duration: 12.30

In A Flemish Christmas, Jan Hadermann tells the Christmas story by means of four Old Flemish Christmas Songs.Mary is chosen to bring Jesus Christ, the son of God, into the world: Het was een maged uitverkoren ('She was a virgin chosen').On the occasion of a census, Mary, who is with child, and Joseph, her husband to be, travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem, where Jesus will be born in a humble stable: Maria die zoude naar Bethlehem gaan (Mary would go to Bethlehem').O kerstnacht, schoner dan de dagen ('Oh Christmas Night, more beautiful than the days') is a stately chorale that sings the praises of Jesus' birth.Three wise men from the East, Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar, follow a bright star in the sky, which leads them to Bethlehem. There, they worship the newborn King, and offer him gold, frankincense and myrrh: Wij komen van Oosten (We've come from the East').This musical Christmas story ends with a festive repeat of the third movement, the stately chorale.Duration: 6:30

£45.00March Slav (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Littlemore, Phillip
March Slav?was composed in 1876 at the request of Nicolai Rubenstein (who had recently spurned Tchaikovsky's first piano concerto, and might have wanted to return to favour with the composer). Tchaikovsky loved Russian folk music--looking to it for inspiration throughout his career--and he makes considerable use of it here. From the opening theme to the final glorious statement of the Czarist national anthem, the march draws on the music of his motherland. It was first performed in a charity concert to support a war effort in the Balkans. He composed and fully scored the march in the short time of just 5 days. At the first performance its impact was such that it had to be encored in full, receiving a tumultuous reception - twice! Duration: 7:20

£30.00Inchcolm - Terry Johns
The island of Inchcolm was visited by St Columba in 567 and is mentioned in Shakespeare's Macbeth. It lies on the stretch of water beyond my balcony, known locally as "Mortimer's deep", and on short winter days, the ruins of Columba's abbey are shrouded in the mists of the estuary and bring a flavour of mystery and legend to my morning coffee. Music comes easily here amidst the crying of the seabirds, and the horn has given its distinctive voice to history, myth and folklore for centuries. Its sound was born in the wide-open spaces and can paint a broad seascape with ease.

£42.00Partita for Band (Postcards from Home) (Score only) - Philip Wilby
The sound and culture of brass bands was part of Philip Wilby's childhood, and this short Partita seeks to commemorate his childish memories in the musical terms of today's currency. Although the music makes technical demands on the players the piece is, nevertheless designed to involve rather than impress its audiences. There are four movements: 'Towers and Chimneys' which is both heraldic and mysterious; 'Churches: Lord of the Dance' is an arrangement of the famous shaker melody made popular in Martin Shaw's hymn of Jesus' life and history; 'Pastorale: Sunday Afternoon recalls those long and languorous days before television, and 'Coronation Day Parade' - a community celebration with a brass band at its centre.
