As the Titanic sank on the 15th April, 1912, eye-witness accounts recall the band playing to the very end in an attempt to keep the passengers calm. Praise My Soul - John Goss - Andi Cook

This special arrangement of the well-known hymn tune was crafted by arranger Andi Cook for his recent wedding, to be played by an all-star group of players made up of instrumentalists from Grimethorpe, Black Dyke, Hepworth, Faireys & EYMS. Whilst originally scored for a congregation to sing along to, with optional organ part (included in this publication), Andi had in mind that no one really likes to sing at weddings, and so the final verse was written to wow the congregation and show his wife's family the awe-inspiring sound a brass band can generate. Since then, this arrangement has been used several times and has found favor with adjudicators, winning best hymn tune at the Morley Contest and the Brighouse Contest this year. The work is a perfect addition to any bands repertoire, working perfectly in all manners of occasions.

My Little Welsh Home - Traditional

This is a Welsh song by W S Gwynne Williams, which I have arranged in memory of my mother. It is for Brass Band, with optional vocal solo or unison choir. My mother was born, Doreen Davies, on 27th November 1918, in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, a small town in South West Wales. She had a beautiful voice, and met my father, Bill Paton, during World War II. She was singing in a troop concert at the County Theatre in her home town, and my father was the MC. Throughout her life, my mother and father entertained, and she was singing right up until the final months of her life. She spent many years of her life in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, a seaside town in South West England, and it was here that she passed away on 20th September 24. During the last several months of her life, she often referred to the song “My Little Welsh Home”. Here are the words.I am dreaming of the mountains of my home, Of the mountains where in childhood I would roam; I have dwelt ‘neath Southern skies, Where the summer never dies, But my heart is in the mountains of my home.I can see the little homestead on the hill, I can hear the magic music of the rill; There is nothing to compare, With the love that was once there, In that little homestead on the hill.I can see the quiet churchyard down below, Where the mountain breezes wander to and fro; And when God my soul will keep, It is there I want to sleep, With those dear old folks that loved me long ago.Looking at the words, I can see why it meant so much to her. Haverfordwest is at the foot of the Preseli Mountains, and her home and Church were at the top of a hill.My mothers’ ashes were taken back to her own little Welsh home, and laid to rest in the grounds of the Church where she was Christened, Confirmed and Married. The Welsh Bass-Baritone singer Bryn Terfel has recorded this song on one of his CDs. It has also been released on “New Horizons”, by Aled Jones.Roger Thorne, composer, arranger and of Thornes Music, also MD of Wem Jubilee Band, was very complimentary about this arrangement, (following a concert in which they featured a Welsh lady singer), referring to the use of tone colours, harmony and the atmospheric sound.

You're My World - Umberto Bindi, Gino Paoli, Carl Sigman - Len Jenkins

"You're My World" is a ballad originally recorded in 1963 as "Il Mio Mondo" ("My World") by Umberto Bindi, who co-wrote the Italian-language version with Gino Paoli. Although the original Italian version was not a hit, even in Italy, the song came to the attention of UK record producer George Martin, who commissioned an English version to be recorded by his protegee Cilla Black. The English lyrics were written by Carl Sigman. Cilla's recording at Abbey Road Studios was made with Johnny Pearson conducting his orchestra and The Breakaways providing background vocals. Her road manager and future husband Bobby Willis also sang on the track. "You're My World" reached No. 1 in Britain on the chart dated 30 May 1964 and remained there for a total of four weeks, one week more than Cilla's preceding single "Anyone Who Had A Heart" (Also available as a Brass arrangement from Wobbleco Music). Although Cilla returned to the UK Top Ten eight times, "You're My World" was her final No. 1 hit. Two quite different arrangements are available; one for Full Brass Band and one for Brass Quintet with optional Glockenspiel. Both attempt to retain the style of the original recording.

MY STRENGTH, MY TOWER Rhapsodic Variations (Brass Band Set) - Dean Goffin

This music consists of a theme followed by five extensive variations. The theme is the composer's own tune set to the words, 'Thee will I love, my strength, my tower', a hymn by Johann Scheffler translated by John Wesley. A strong modal flavour is characteristic of the theme. Variation 1: This is a light and graceful variation with a good deal of imitative writing. It leads, without a break, into the next variation. Variation 2: Fire and ferocity are asked for in the course of this variation. Variation 3: This variation demonstrates the original approach of the composer. Solo lines for cornet and euphonium are included with their arabesques and arpeggii. Variation 4: Taking the form of a passacaglia, the 'ground' is given out at once by the basses. Fragments of the 'ground', plain or decorated, are combined and used in a number of ways, revealing the composer's mastery of counterpoint. Variation 5: The briskly moving and scintillating final variation abounds in sudden variations of dynamic. The tempo remains constant until an increase is called for in the coda. This 'contest' version has been prepared by Brian Bowen who was asked to re-work the percussion part and introduce a repiano cornet part (Salvation Army band publications do not, in general, have a part for repiano cornet).
