    Animal Kingdom - William Vean

    In this composition William Vean takes you on a journey through the fascinating and exciting world of animals. Apart from it being a composition filled with "special effects", Animal Kingdom contains many educational elements, such as playing in swing (triplets feeling), chromatics, flutter tonguing, gypsy tuning, varying keys, and, of course, dynamics and articulation. The melodic lines occur in all four voices, as well as in all percussion parts, providing each musician with the opportunity to play a solo or to accompany. Highly recommended for your youth band! William Vean is an educational composer. He knows how to musically shape the special elements from our daily lives. His music is therefore very expressive, containing creative solutions to possible problems. Special ways of playing make his music particularly interesting for the winds, but the percussion section is also featured in his special effects. The world of the animals always plays on ones imagination. In Animal Kingdom, William Vean has portrayed a number of animals in a special manner: Kevin Kangaroo - The jumping character of this animal can be heard in different voices. The swing style also emphasizes the characteristic movements of the kangaroo. Playing in swing style can be practised by using scales. Eddy Elephant - For some of his smaller fellow fauna friends this can be quite an ordeal, but for Eduard (Eddy for friends and intimates) it is his daily walk. Baldrick Bat - Baldrick the Bat is a mysterious character. This can be heard in the fast moving valves and keys, accompanied by special effects in the percussion section. Curtis Camel - Curtis the Camel trudges across the desert, feeling bored. The idea that the horizon will never change does not affect him anymore. He has accepted his fate. The distinctive tones from the gypsy scale provide the suitable oriental sounds. Betty Butterfly - Butterfly Betty elegantly, and without worries, flutters from flower to flower in the garden. Her motto: Carpe Diem (Seize the Day). Betty is a one-day butterfly. Marvin Monkey - A "swing" monkey stirs up the feelings. Even members of the orchestra will look like real monkeys. How about your audience? Each part has its own difficulties and challenges. Important in the first part is playing "in swing" (triplets feeling). This can be practised using scales. In the second part ensemble playing and balance are important. In Baldrick additional information on the effects that have to be played might be useful. "New" sounds are, of course, welcome. Curtis the Camel introduces the gypsy scale. Additional explanation of the use of the scale might be useful. Key changes are interesting in this part. A slight accent on the first beat of the bar will add to the charm of this part. Marvin the Monkey brings back the swing rhythm that was introduced in the first part, alternated by a "straight" part with attention to chromatics and articulation. A story teller will definitely be an asset when performing this composition.

    Dancing Trolls [Norwegian Dance] - Oystein Olsen Vadsten

    "Dancing Trolls" is a sequel to "The Battle of the Hats", which was published in 2015. Like "The Battle of the Hats", "Dancing Trolls" is a piece of music based on Norwegian traditional dances. This time around,its the reinlender dance which takes centre stage.The music is composed by Oystein Olsen Vadsten who keeps the strong melodic and tempo, which is dear to this kind of dance. Admittedly given a make-over with a more rhythmic accompaniment and more exciting harmonization.This makes it a fun piece, both to Listen to and play. The reinlender dance derives from the Rhineland in Germany,and is also known as the German Polka.To the conductor:Because this is a dance form whichis dependent on the right "swing", it is of great importance to keep as close to the metronome mark as possible. A steady groove, primarily specified by the drum set, is also essential for a good result. Remember to keep a good balance between the melody -carrying instruments and the accompaniment. Good luck and have fun with this "crazy" little tune.

    Commissioned by Radoy Brass for their 20 years anniversary.This version was first performed by Manger Skulemusikklag in 2005.The Work is devided into Five Scenes:1. Sverdet (The Sword) 3:452. Advarsel - fra en vis mann (Warning - from a Wise Man) 2:303. Dragen (The Dragon) 3:004. Advarsel II - fra syngende fugler (Warning II - from singing birds) 1:355. Gull - forbannelsen (Gold - The Curse) 2:50Total durata 13:30This work is based on five scenes from the tale about "Sigurd Favnesbane" (Sigurd the dragonslayer). Moods and atmospheres in the piece represent my way of retelling the old myth.1. The SwordThe dwarf blacksmith Regin is hammering and sharpening the edges of the magical sword Gram. After three attempts the sword is finally sharp enough to kill a dragon. 2. Warning - from a Wise manRichard Wagners opera Sigfried is based on the same story. In the opera the hero get warned by a wise man. He tells the secret of how to survive an attack of the dragon by hiding in a hole in the pathway and then kill the dragon with the sword as the dragon passes on its way to the river to drink water.3. DragonThe Dragon (Favne) guards a fantastic treasure, but he is also the brother of the blacksmith Regin. Favne get killed and his blood flows slowly while he laments (trombone/bass trombone).4. Warning II - from singing birdsWhile frying the heart, Sigurd burns his thumb and put it into his mouth to cool it down. Then he swallow a drop of fresh magic dragon blood which transfers the ability to understand the birdlanguage. The birds sing warnings to Sigurd telling him that Regin will betray him and later kill him. Sigurd then kills Regin instead.5. Gold - the CurseSigurd takes the gold treasure and escapes on the horseback of Grane. But his robbery of the gold lead him into trouble: The gold is banned and a curse will hit everyone whotakes it...Myth is a programmatic work where the story is quite clearly illustrated throughout the piece:In the first movement you can hear the blacksmith working with hammer on ambolt while the heat is intense from the glows. The dwarf has got his own theme i lower brass (bar 4-5). The hero Sigurd has his own identifying chord (2 bars before F). The chord is also a symbol of the sword.In the second movement the warning from the wise man is expressed in the lyric bass line.The airblow in instruments illustrate the dragon Favne on his way out of his cave, and later the blood flows slowly. The dragon takes his last deep breath after a painful duet in trombones. The birds sing their motifs (lightly, but not cheerful though), until Sigurd cuts the head off Regin and it hits the ground.The last movement describes the atmosphere andstate of mind as the curse infects the obsessed thief.

But it is also a giant stone or a part of a mountain.3. Seascape (Allegro)I denne satsen forsoker jeg a fange ulike aspekter ved havet, samtidig som satsen samler opp musikalske ideer fra de to foregaende satsene. Denne satsen videreforer, oppsummerer og avslutter verket.The third movement is inspired by different aspects of the sea.     Har du fyr? - Ola Bremnes - Oyvind Strand

    This arrangement was made for The Suoni Wind Orchestra of Skien, Norway, and performed for the first time at their Promenade Concert "At Sea" at the Ibsen Culture Center, March 8th 2014, being the final number of the concert. Participating this concert was also the Choir Canto Libre and the two vocal soloists were Eli Kristin Hansveen and Andreas Hoff. Since that time this arrangement has been used also at other concerts involving choir and soloists.It is important that tempo is not too slow and one has to be thorough with details in the percussion parts. I have tried to paint a musical picture of the sea, as an eternal power, shifting from the quiet and lazy to the powerful and majestic with crushing waves and stormy winds, as Ola Bremnes describes it in his fantastic lyrics.- Oyvind Strand -Solo Options: Vocal ??"     Open All Hours - Wellington Guernsey & Joseph Ascher - John Lee

    The theme tune from one of Britain’s iconic comedy shows is in fact, an old tune entitled ‘Alice, Where Art Thou’ composed by Joseph Ascher, a Dutch composer and pianist. The opening title sequence of the show heard brass arranger, Max Harris performing his own version of the tune, who also composed the incidental music for the show. This light-hearted release coincides with the release of the new Open All Hours series starring David Jason who now runs the corner shop years later.     Lament by Frank Bridge (arr. for brass band by Paul Hindmarsh)

    English composer Frank Bridge (1879 – 1941) composed Lament on 14 June 1915, in memory of Catherine Crompton, who drowned when the Cunard liner Lusitania was torpedoed by a German submarine on 7 May, 1915 off the coast of Ireland. 1201 men, women and children lost their lives out of the 1962 people aboard. Ninety-four children died, including Catherine, her twin brother Paul and four other siblings. Paul Crompton, Snr. (44), a British businessman working in Philadelphia, his wife Gladys (40) and the family nanny were also drowned. How Bridge’s dedication came about is uncertain. One contemporary source says that Bridge knew the family, but it is also possible that he came across the family photograph which was published in many newspapers in the wake of the sinking. His response to this personal tragedy was characteristically spontaneous and utterly sincere. It is one of his most effective miniatures, poignant yet restrained in its lyrical beauty, with compelling directness and simplicity.This arrangement was made for performance at the 2015 RNCM Festival of Brass where it was beautifully performed by Cory Band under Philip Harper.Duration: 4-5 mins Score and parts ?35, plus postage and packing Score: ?10PHM Catalogue No. PHM010

    Tranquil Seas - Dan Price

    Tranquil Seas - Suite for Brass Band and Percussion, takes its inspiration from the evocative titles given to the various areas of the Moon's surface.Maria (or Mare) are the large plains on the moon's surface which were created by ancient volcanic eruptions. They are less reflective than the higher ground on the surface and therefore have a darker, blue-ish appearance when viewed from earth with the naked eye. Early astronomers mistook this change in colour as actual water and therefore named them seas.I Sea of Clouds - Mare NubiumThe first movement takes the form of a fanfare and theme and opens full gusto at double fortissimo with a rich descending bass line, fast paced ostinati in solo cornets accompanying a slow paced fanfare from back row cornets, horns and trombones.II Sea of Tranquility - Mare TranquillitatisThis is a slow, peaceful movement in binary form. The first section offers a sense of space and weightlessness through gently ebbing accompaniment and features solos for flugelhorn and euphonium. Percussion and muted trombones introduce a rhythmic pulse to the second section which underpins the remainder of the ensemble scored in block harmony. This interplay between polyphonic and homophonic writing gives the effect of the slowly revolving moon.III Sea of Serenity - Mare SerenitatisThe movement starts with the back drop of gently overlapping ostinati in tuned percussion and a sustained pedal point in horns. Low brass introduce the main theme to which other members of the ensemble join as the movement develops. A second theme is introduced which is more rhythmic in nature and contains a combination of homophonic writing set against a strong, dance-like ostinato (written compound time against single time) which gives the movement a sense of movement. This part of the music expresses the relationship of the moon and the earth, constantly revolving in their eternal dance against the back drop of space. Despite the amount of rhythmic content in this movement the pulse remains slow and there is a lack of urgency in the music so that the calmness and euphoria have an almost hypnotic effect.IV Sea of Dreams - Mare DesideriiThe finale of Tranquil Seas is written in the form of a toccata, opening with a thinly scored pianissimo. The characteristic arpeggio line of the toccata is initially scored on solo cornet and as the movement develops this motif is passed to almost all the family groups in the ensemble. The rich sweeping melody line also associated with this form is featured characteristically on the low brass. This high-octaine final movement brings the complete suite to a dramatic conclusion.This is challenging and demanding music that is also rewarding for both performer and listener. All of the movements work well as individual items if the complete suite is to long for your program.
