Through a musical fresco, Seal of Unity tells the story of the Grutli Oath, an emblematic Swiss historical event dating back to the 13th century. The work begins in a mysterious fashion with the presentation of the main motif, representing the 3 primitive cantons. The piece then reveals all the colours of the brass band, with each of the instruments appearing in turn. After a slow chorale, the fast tempo returns before a dynamic and explosive coda.< BR>< BR>This work was commissioned by the Swiss Brass Band Association to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Swiss Brass Band Championships, in 2025.

This is an arrangement which has to be performed a bit humorous in the spirit of the original.It starts with a kazoo-like opening, played on the mouthpieces. At C, baritones and euphoniums should stand up. Maybe the musicians can play it by heart?Two bars before D, the tempo increase. On E, the cornet players should stand (and play by heart)?New, even higher tempo two bars before F. The trombonists should stand up in bar 103 to prepare for a terrific tempo. But G will be played like a laidback reggae-version. Flugelhorn and horns can stand up simultaneous with the glissando in bar 120.The tempo at H should be high and fresh and with several sections standing. In bar 158 should almost all players sit. At bar 160 everyone should stand up.In bar 162, all players should turn to the audience during the crescendo.

Fanfare for an Occasion was written to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the founding of Anglo Music Press, the publishing company dedicated to the works of British composer, Philip Sparke. It is a bright and festive work in which the main theme starts on the tenor instruments of the band before appearing as canonical imitation by all sections in turn. A short, repeated bridge passage leads to a second theme on the horns that is taken up by the full band and leads back to a return of the main theme and a repeat of the second subject, which brings the fanfare to a brilliant close.

£154.60Circius - Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen
The work is important for me because it was my first piece to be performed outside Norway. Black Dyke Band/David King performed it and did a recording of it in 1991. In the original score I quote a Swedish bishop (Olaus Mangnus) who lived in the 15th century. He travelled around Scandinavia and drew maps - very important historic material. When he came to the north of Norway (where I come from) he decribed the wind from the north as Ciricus: (something like) Worst of all winds is Circius, that revolves (?= turn upside down) heaven and earth. (Well, not a good translation Im afraid). The fast sections reflects the mighty winds from the north. In the middle section, I borrowed afolksong-like tune (by C. Elling, a Norwegian composer). The text (by Kristoffer Janson) tells about old times when the fishermen used open boats: they had to put their lives in the hands of God.

This work was commissioned by Eurofestival. Ever since antiquity, mankind has been fascinated by the lion: symbolising courage, strength and temperance. Many have made use of the lion to represent themselves in symbols and emblems. In five movements the composer describes both the history of the lion throughout centuries, as well as the characteristics. A challenging idea to turn into music! The final movement 'King of Kings' is extremely spectacular. A great choice for thematic concerts or as a main piece in your concert or contest.

£33.33Disinformation! (Brass Band) Joe Galuszka
This atmospheric work by English composer Joe Galuszka is set in three movements: I. Fear II. Hope III. Solidarity (March for Truth) The composer writes: 'All around us is mistrust in the information we receive. Chinese misinformation. Russian disinformation. 'Fake News' in the United States. At every turn we doubt what we hear, what we see. Disinformation was composed in response to the ever-growing and all powerful misinformation campaigns worldwide that reached dizzying levels of influence, coming from some of the most eminent heads of states, during the turn of the 21st century. With division and disillusionment now rife and engrained in Western democracies, the unravelling of the social order is reflected in this short work for brass band. Opening with Fear, Disinformation starts with vast amounts of noise taking over the establishment and paints a world with people coming to terms with the cacophony of sound that is 'false information'. With a retreat to a brief moment of solace, Hope conjures up a calm escapism where on the outside, the brave and the wise look on to what is becoming of our new world. Maybe there is chance to pull together? Ending with a frenzied, brazen climax, the piece concludes with Solidarity - where people and the politicians come to loggerheads in a battle - where those who seek division are called out and the lies are laid bare for all to see, as we enter, once more, the unknown.' Eric Ball originally made this duet arrangement with piano accompaniment for inclusion in our album Czardas (order code 0078) and it was later transcribed for brass band by Eric Wilson (who was named after the composer!). The Welsh tune is handled in turn by the duettists, one embellishing while the other carries the melody. The accompaniment parts are not difficult making this delightful, somewhat nostalgic, piece ideal for bands of all abilities.

£33.33E lucevan le stelle (Cornet/Euphonium Duet with Brass Band) Puccini arr.Bushnell
Tosca is an opera in three acts by the Italian composer Giacomo Puccini. The opera is set in June 1800 in Rome, and tells the story of the Kingdom of Naples and the threat to its control of Rome by Napoleon's invasion of Italy. Some of Puccini's best-known arias can be found in Tosca. The opera is based on Victorien Sardou's dramatic play of the same name (La Tosca). Puccini saw the play at least twice in 1889 and begged his publisher, Giulio Ricordi, to obtain the rights to turn it into an opera, which were secured in 1891 - although Puccini relinquished the rights to Alberto Franchetti before being recommissioned in 1895. Puccini wrote "I see in this Tosca the opera I need, with no overblown proportions, no elaborate spectacle, nor will it call for the usual excessive amount of music." It took four years to write, with Puccini arguing with his librettists (Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa) and his publisher. Although the first performance was delayed by a day due to the unrest in Rome at the time, the opera was premiered on 14 January 1900 at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome. The critics reviews were indifferent, but it was an immediate success with the public. The opera is through-composed, with the different musical elements weaved from piece to piece. Puccini used the Wagner's leitmotif concept to identity different parts of the opera. Taken from Act 3, E lucevan le stelle is sung by Cavaradossi, a painter, who has fallen for the singer Tosca. The corrupt Chief of Police, Baron Scarpia, longs for Tosca himself and, upon suspecting Cavaradossi of helping a political prisoner escape, he takes the opportunity to get rid of Cavaradossi and blackmail Tosca into being with him. The guards lead Cavaradossi to the roof of Castel Sant'Angelo, where he is told he has 1 hour to live before being executed. He asks to write a letter to Tosca, overcome by memories, he sings E lucevan le stelle (And the stars shone). It was selected by the tenor Wynne Evans as one of the most romantic songs for his top ten arias for Classic FM. He described it as "another tenor classic, both tragic and beautiful." This arrangement (for cornet and euphonium duet with brass band) includes alternative parts for horns in F and lower brass in bass clef. £34.95Fire & the Phoenix, The - Christopher Bond
The Fire & the Phoenix (2015) was commissioned by Brett Baker in early 2015 as the opening track to his solo CD 'Myths & Legends'. Whilst structurally a single-movement work, it is presented so that it can link directly into the next work on the CD, adding to a continuous theme comprising a number of pieces from a number of composers. Opening with huge strident chords in the full band, the representation of the phoenix is instantly reflected; bold, powerful and a bird of great intensity. This makes way for a more mystical section marked 'distant' which reflect the beauty of the Phoenix and it's mythical nature where the trombone soars up into its higher register with a sweeping melody. Soon after, the music takes a sharp turn, becoming dramatic and instantly moving away from the mystical mood created previously. Here, we imagine the Phoenix catching fire, burning intensely with huge flames as it gradually turns into ash. We reach a tonic pedal point in the music, over which chord progressions subtly weave in and out of the texture. Here, we imagine the Phoenix rising from the ashes, with the dynamics gradually increasing to reflect this, slowly taking shape as it is born again. A return to earlier material follows, this time manipulated to reflect the Phoenix in its new form - the same bird; the same animal; but at the same time different. A beautiful chorale-like passage is heard before the music transports us back into a magical land, where delicate rhythmic ideas are juxtaposed against bolder lower chords; both ideas together transporting the listener forward into the next piece.
