£73.52Blaenwern Diversions (Brass Band) Karl Whelan
Commissioned by Micah Dominic Parsons, Blaenwern Diversions is based on the well loved hymn, Love Divine. The composer writes: 'Originally intended to be a set of variations, I found myself wandering around the notes of the hymn tune at the piano and found that the variations almost took on a life of their own resulting in what we have here - diversions. There are 8 diversions in total; the introductory diversion; diversions 1 - 6; and the finale which are divided into three linked movements. Blaenwern Diversions represents my entry into the world of contest works, so even though the piece aims to test the band, it is important that the band enjoy the music within no matter how treacherous!' VIEW SCORE PDF The arranger, Kenneth Downie writes: 'This music was commissioned by Mike Griffiths, Music Director of Riviera Concert Brass, based in Torquay in Devon, England. It is developed around the hymn tune Margaret, and written in memory of the lady of that name who was a renowned supporter of, and generous donor to the band. The graceful melody was written by Timothy Matthews (1826-1910), and it is usually associated with the words of the hymn, the first verse of which says: Thou didst leave thy throne and thy kingly crown When thou camest to earth for me; But in Bethlehem's home was there found no room For thy holy nativity, O come to my heart, Lord Jesus; There is room in my heart for thee. I feel that there is a strong emotional core to this lovely tune and any performance should seek to bring out this quality, in a musical manner.' PDF download includes score and full set of parts. Originally conceived as a ceremonial work for the Band of the Royal Air Force Regiment, Veni, Sancte Spiritus was written for a Thanksgiving Service at St Clement Danes Church - the Central Church of the RAF in London. This evocative piece was inspired by the church's thousand-year-old architecture and resonant acoustic, creating a soundscape that is both reverent and atmospheric. In adapting the work for brass band, the composer introduces Vaughan Williams's hymn tune Down Ampney, seamlessly woven into the final sections of the piece. This lyrical addition enhances the spiritual tone of the music, aligning perfectly with the hymn text 'Come Down, O Love Divine', and lending the work its new title and emotional depth. 'Prelude on St Clement's' was composed for the 2023 Royal Northern College of Music Brass Band Festival in memory of internationally renowned conductor and composer Bramwell Tovey. . Bramwell was the Artistic Director of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain throughout the composer's 7 years as a tenor horn player in the NYBBGB and the hymn tune 'St Clement's (no. 82 in the 120 Hymns for Brass Band book) was used by Bramwell to conclude every course. This setting of 3 verses of the hymn tune 'The Day Thou Gavest. was premiered by the RNCM Brass Band in January 2023.

Deus Invictus draws its inspiration from well-known words from Romans 8: 38-39; 'For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any owers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, can separate us from the love of God'. The music reflects the confidence and certainty of the scripture text while, as in everyday life, trials and tests come along which are reflected in a sequence of musical skirmishes. The work introduces the 19th century hymn 'St Albinus' to a wider audience and also includes references to the tunes 'St Margaret' and 'Rachie'. A setting of the Easter Hymn, 'Christ the Lord is risen today!', is heard followed by a final reprise of 'St Albinus'.

The first movement consists of a sparkling Fanfare followed by a stately Theme which ends quietly. The second movement is a Children's Song; quirky but cute, and the Hymn which follows is a study in calm and tranquillity, featuring a quartet-group of cornet, baritone, trombone and euphonium. The last movement is a virtuosic Toccata which eventually begins to recall the other themes of the suite before a grand reprise of the first movement Theme brings the work to a dazzling conclusion.Approximate duration: 11 minutes

Sir John Stainer's fine tune is often associated with Charles Wesley's hymn, 'Love divine, all loves excelling'. The introduction is designed to evoke a feeling of awe, and a broad, confident style will set the pattern for the whole arrangement. Contrast in colour has been sought in the scoring but special effects must not be allowed to obscure the melody. The arrangement ends in an atmosphere suggested by the final line of the hymn, 'Lost in wonder, love and praise'.
