King Lear is a tragedy by William Shakespeare. Lear descends into madness bringing tragic consequences for all. Based on a mythological pre-Roman Celtic king, the play has been widely adapted for the stage and motion pictures, with the title role coveted by many of the world's most accomplished actors. Its first known performance was in 1607, George Bernard Shaw wrote, "No man will ever write a better tragedy than Lear". Originally orchestrated for 2 flutes, 4 horns, 3 trumpets, timpani, side drum, 2 harps, and strings, Debussy wrote five minutes of incidental music for a production of King Lear, produced at the Theatre Mogador Paris in 1904. A tuneful and reasonably easy suite, comprising Fanfare, Lullaby and All at Sixes and Sevens. There are some asymmetric rhythmic challenges in the last movement as implied in its title, but otherwise this suite is not particularly difficult and sets out to be attractive throughout.The Fanfare is vibrant and energetic while Lullaby is very lyrical and occasionally punctuated by harmonic piquancy. All at Sixes and Sevens plays games between 3/4 and 6/8 with some sevens thrown in for good measure.Duration: 8.45

Deliverance is the fourth movement of the suite War of the Worlds which was commissioned by the Senzoku Gakuen College of Music Saxophone Orchestra and first performed by them in the Maeda Hall, Japan on June 29 2012, the composer conducting. The music is dedicated to Professor Shin-ichi Iwamoto. The transcription for brass band was first performed by the Brighouse & Rastrick Band, conductor David King, in the Bridgewater Hall Manchester on September 8 2012.The suite takes inspiration from the 1953 film script adaptation of the famous HG Wells novel and key scenes from the film are set as individual movements: Deliverance - survivors seek sanctuary in the Church of Santa Maria, still standing among the burning ruins of Los Angeles, and pray for deliverance from the invaders.Each movement of War of the Worlds is available separately allowing for a variety of "mini-suite" combinations eg: Movements 1,2 and 5 or 3,4 and 5 etc.

Erik Satie's Gymnopedies are a series of three short piano pieces that were first published in 1888. These atmospheric pieces, all written in 3/4 time and sharing a common theme and structure, are recognised the world over and are his most famous compositions. Gymnopedie No.1?is divided into two almost identical parts, with a steady accompanying rhythm of crotchet-minim, crotchet-minim (short-long, short-long) that remains constant throughout - with the exception of the last two bars of each part! This gently lilting background supports an expressive melodic line which creates the occasional dissonance, yet seems impressively tension free. Duration: 8:10
