    Match Day - Peter Meechan

Match Day takes its inspiration from a night in May 2005, when the team the composer supported from his childhood, Liverpool FC, won the European Cup in what was considered by many to be one of the greatest football matches of all time. The piece is not only inspired by a football match, but also takes its musical material from chants and songs that you will hear at 3PM on a Saturday afternoon at any football ground in the country.Match Day was written as a result of a commission from the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, and their Musical Director, Bramwell Tovey, to whom the piece is dedicated.

    Milestone - Peter Meechan

Milestone is a concerto commissioned by Mark Wilkinson (with funds provided by the Arts Council England) to celebrate 21 years as Principal Cornet with Fodens Band. In three movements, the work is intended to not only demonstrate the soloist's virtuosic skills, but also his ability to communicate to the audience.

    Origins - Peter Meechan

Origins is in three movements, with each movement having a different subject matter, all linked by the idea of origins: the first movement refers to musical origins; the second to the origins of life; and the final movement to the space exploration - the research of all origins. The first movement is based on a short motif, heard in the first three notes the soloist plays. These three notes cover the interval of a minor third (an interval that often plays a crucial role in my music) on which the whole concerto is built. The soloist and accompaniment interplay freely throughout the opening section, before an ostinato accompaniment appears - over which the soloist sounds a long legato melody. A short cadenza follows and a return to the opening material leads the movement to an end. The second movement, titled Harry's Song, is - as tradition dictates - a slow movement. Happy and reflective in nature, the main melody was written on the evening that my closest friend, Mark Bousie (a fine euphoniumist himself), and his wife Jayne, had their first child - Harry Bousie. It seemed only fitting that this song should be written for Harry in celebration. The final movement brings me back to a lifelong fascination with space, and in this particular movement, the Space Shuttle Discovery. Having completed 39 missions (including flying the Hubble telescope in to orbit), and spent a total of 365 days in space, SS Discovery made its final voyage in 2011 and was taken to the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. in April 2012. This final movement, titled Discovery, pays tribute to the great shuttle whose missions inspired millions across the generations. Origins was commissioned by Marco Schneider, Adrian Schneider and the Dunshan Symphonic Wind Orchestra, Beijing, China.

Orpheus (Concerto for Trumpet) - Peter Meechan

Orpheus was an unusual character in Greek mythology. Instead of the all-conquering battling hero, or an immortal god, he was peaceful, mortal human being who used his talent as a musician to enchant his enemies with beautiful music, which led to peaceful victories in battles.Tragedy strikes when his wife, Eurydice, steps on a viper snake which in turn bites her, injecting its fatal venom. His cries of anguish and pain at finding his dead wife, mixed with his songs of mourning and sorrow, open the work in an extended, unaccompanied cadenza for the soloist.Orpheus is dedicated to Jens Lindemann, an incredible trumpet player, musician and friend (and someone who has, so far, managed to avoid a beheading by drunken women). Jens gave the world premiere, accompanied by Middle Tennessee State University Wind Ensemble – conducted by Dr Reed Thomas - on April 10 2014.Peter Meechan 2014====Please note, this product is available only as a PDF download – more information on PDF downloads is available on the right hand menu.====

    Red Flame - Peter Meechan

Red Flame was inspired by a night spent in Groningen, Netherlands, whilst Katrina and the composer were attending the 2005 European Brass Band Championships.Queens night was in full flow outside, but whilst we were inside, there was a kind of surreal calm. However, that all changed as soon as we headed into the centre of Groningen, where the streets were full of happy people, all singing and dancing (And drinking!).The title refers to one particular drink in a bar that came to us on fire! The work was commissioned by, and dedicated to, Katrina Marzella.

    Requiem Paraphrases - Peter Meechan

Written as part of the 250 year celebrations of Mozart's birth (1756), this is a solo guaranteed to please an audience, and be an enjoyable challenge to perform. Originally commissioned by and dedicated to Steven Mead, he described the work as "...Requiem Paraphrases will probably turn out to be regarded as perhaps the most important work for euph and brass ensemble ever composed...simply magnificent and if Mozart were alive today he would have enjoyed the funky middle section, I'm sure."

Scene From the Silver Plate - Peter Meechan

Scene From the Silver Plate takes it's title from the Rio de la Plata, the literal translation being Silver River. This piece, using some of the traditional music from the region (Variants on the tango etc.), is quasi-incidental music from a fictional film, involving some kind of chase from the silver mountains to the estuary. Our fictional hero also has a romantic interest - will he make it away with his silver, and his lady? The trombone duets with various members of the band, including solo horn, euphonium and cornet.

    Sentinel - Peter Meechan

Sentinel was written in the summer of 2010 and follows on from another work by the composer, The Karman Line - a piece which describes the point where the earth's atmosphere ends and Outer Space begins.Sentinel goes further into space and takes the idea that the stars are somehow guardians of the sky that we can see, and Space further beyond. The opening section, which prominently features metallic percussion and broad melodies, portrays the grand open space that the stars inhabit. The middle, slower, section is more reflective depicting the isolation of Space, before we hear a reprise of the first section as the finale.Sentinel was written for the 2011 National Youth Brass Band Championships of Great Britain.

    Shine - Peter Meechan

Shine is my second large scale work for solo tuba, following on from my concerto Episodes and Echoes. Like the concerto, Shine was commissioned and premiered (with the Grimethorpe Brass Band, conducted by Howard Evans) by Les Neish - the title being an anagram of the soloist surname.Although in one movement, Shine has 3 broad sections, each requiring virtuosic skill and dexterity from the soloist. The opening section features lots of bright, metallic sounds - especially in the percussion section - providing the accompaniment to soloist as they demonstrate the range and flexibility of the tuba.Peter Meechan, 2011
