This foot-tapping Latin-style cornet feature showcasing the front row was written by Barrie Gott for the Brisbane Excelsior Band. The composer writes: 'I had wanted to write something in this genre after the success of the third movement of the Jazz Suite. Entertainment numbers are always needed for park and popular concerts. It is important that the rhythm section maintains a consistent tempo. They can be featured also. The samba rhythm and feel should be maintained throughout. ABOUT THIS PIECE: Upon being asked to write a Christmas musical for his church, Mark Lowry penned a series of monologues based on Christmas Songs including a conversation with Mary about the birth and life of her Son, Jesus. Lowry worked on the lyrics for years until he approached southern gospel singer-songwriter and harmonica player, Buddy Greene. Greene agreed to pen music for his words, completing the instrumentation within a few days. The result is this new-age Christmas classic: 'Mary Did You Know". DURATION: 4'00". DIFFICULTY: 4th+. 'By Water and the Word' was composed for 2020 Brass Band Summer School in memory of it's long-standing course administrator Philip Biggs, who passed away in 2019. Aside from his work with BBSS, Philip was also the renowned administrator for the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain where my first opportunities as a writer of brass music were presented. It's a certainty to say that without Philip's work at the head of this organisation, there's zero chance I would be able to do what I do today as a musician, and for that it was a huge honour to write this short work in his memory. Under Maestro Bramwell Tovey, each course would conclude with an encore of The Day Thou Gavest (St. Clements) and one of the most used hymn tunes throughout the week was The Church's One Foundation (Aurelia). Since then, these two tunes have become synonymous with the NYBBGB and in turn Philip's life & work, so I felt it fitting to combine these two wonderful sacred melodies into a new work paying homage to those memories. .

On 14 September 2021, Luc Craps died of cancer at the age of 59. He was a true pacesetter, extremely funny when he could, serious when necessary. Some time after his death, Luc's wife Erika asked close friend Roger to write a work in lasting memory of Luc.

...Your Own Tale? (Bra) - Lode Violet
After winning the 1st prize at the Conservatory in Brussels with his arrangement of 'Die Post', Lode decided to write an original work for Brass Band Willebroek and dedicated this to the band and his father Frans Violet. The work begins with a soft, dreamy cornet introduction that develops into a lyrical melody. After a short spell with the baritone a second theme comes to life. Dialogues between several instruments brings the composition to it's climax, and the euphonium and flugel bring rest again. The title '... Your own Tale?' refers to the imagination of the listener, as everyone creates their own story.

Toccatina (Bra) - Olivier Marquis
In May 2017, during the European Brass Band Championships, the composer meets Michel Leveugle who asks him to write the testpiece for the B Division of the Flemish Open Brass Band Championship 2018. On the way back to Switzerland, Olivier Marquis invents an ostinato which later forms the backbone from Toccatina. After a first, restless, presentation of the theme by the trombones, the ostinato shifts to the basses, euphoniums and horns after which the theme is renewed at the cornets. A quiet mysterious passage brings the flugel and euphonium to the fore, after which the ostinato takes back his place. The theme comes back, to evolve to major and then close the work festively.

Dual (for euphoniums and band) was commissioned by Robbert Vos and Anteun Hoesen of Altena Brass, the Netherlands. Pearce strived to write a fun, melodic and challenging piece that showed off the vast range and virtuosity of these fine players. The octatonic scale forms the harmonic basis for much of the piece, which is a musical competition or race between our mighty Euphonium soloists! Rapidly ascending and descending atonal lines create constant drama for both soloists and band, culminating in a more expressive and tonal ending.

As a young man, Andrew Pearce had fond memories of playing Cornet in the local Youth Brass Band, where he first experienced the power and beauty of brass music. After completing 'Maestro' concertino for Philip Cobb, he decided to write a more gentle and lyrical piece for him, which paid homage to his musical roots in the Salvation Army. 'Interlude' is ideal for a proficient solo cornet player in any brass band: tuneful, reflective and elegiac with lots of expression.
