Variants on an English Hymn Tune - Philip Sparke

This set of variations on the well-known hymn tune Holy, holy, holy! will make a most satisfying addition to the solo repertoire for euphonuim and brass band. It is in the traditional air varie form with an introduction, theme and 3 variations. The original melody (known as Nicaea) was composed by John Bacchus Dykes' especially for Reginald Heber's renowned hymn of praise and became universally popular when it was included in Hymns Ancient and Modern in 1861. A beautiful solo that will test the soloists ability to show true emotion.

A New Dawn - Christopher Bond

For Tenor Horn & Brass Band, Written for & Commissioned by Owen FarrA New Dawn (2013) was commissioned by and written for British tenor horn virtuoso Owen Farr in late 2013, to provide the title track of his new CD album. With a specific brief, the work was to include a bold ear-catching 'fanfare-esque' opening to bring maximum impact to the opening of the album, before settling in a rhythmic groove which allows the new tempo and reduced texture to settle before the entry of the tenor horn, who's initial four bar motif is what forms the basis of much of the work. Following this, structurally, the work follows with a set of variations, carefully demonstrating the capabilities of the instrument and indeed the player. Bar 90 sees the return of the bold opening gestures, this time followed with a harmonic transformation, before a recapitulation at bar 120 which sees a return to the original tenor horn material and an increase in intensity, volume and virtuosity through to the close. A New Dawn was premiered by Owen Farr and the Cornwall Youth Brass Band on 30th December 2013, and was recorded by Owen and the Cory Band in March 2014, featuring as the title track on his CD release of the same name.

A Tribute to Henk Badings - Rob Goorhuis

The motivation for composing this test piece for the Concert Division Brassband of the 2001 WMC was Rob Goorhuis's deep respect for one of the greatest Dutch composers of the 20-th century who also enlarged the wind band repertoire in a most valuable way. Goorhuis wanted to light up the "soft and kind" side of the brassband and wrote about this composition : "The basis is a theme of twelve tones wich Badings once played at an International Organ Improvisation Contest in Haarlem. My organ teacher participated in that contest and so the theme remained somehow in the back of my mind." The composer worked out a series of variations and clustered them into bundles of three and so the melody kept its diversity while remaining easy to recognise.

Aubade - Dawn Songs of the Fabulous Birds - Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen

Commissioned by The Norwegian Band Federation for The European Brass Band Championship 2003, in Bergen, Norway (Third edition)I remember as a kid the very early morning wake-up ceremonies caused by Seagulls having a "party" outside our home. Very few would describe it as beautiful, particularly not at 4:30 in the morning... But by listening carefully to birds I was fascinated by their diversity and musical language: they dont sing tunes or long phrases, they rather make sounds and signals, based on short motives.Aubade is based on musical pictures of the imaginary birds: the creatures with wings that exists only in myths and legends. The whole story starts with a Baritone-cadenza that evoke all the sleeping creatures. Very soon they all start to sing their songs in one way or another. The composition has a burlesque scherzo-character including slow espressive intersections. Traditional elements like melody and harmony is combined with extensive sounds and textural effects created by use of multiple muting, singing and playing at the same time.I am not too concerned about having a program for the piece. I just know that by thinking of the unheard dragon-songs, griffin-songs, the sound of the dodo, my creativity was stimultated. As a piece of music, Aubade follows its own rules based on well-known elements like melodies, arpeggio-figures, harmonies, rhythms, variations and recapitulation of ideas.- Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen ??"

Triptych (on a theme by Handel) - Peter Meechan

Triptych (on a Theme by Handel) was commissioned by horn soloist Lesley Howie for a premiere performance at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester. In three broad sections, the work is a modern take on the traditional 'theme and variations' concept, used in many brass band solos. The three sections of the piece are:fanfare and theme - a fanfare sounded by the soloist at the opening is taken on by the band, leading to a setting of Handel's Sarabande (from his 6th Suite for keyboard) and a recapitulation of the fanfareslow song - a simple melody, becoming more elaborate throughout the sectionfinale – a quasi-tango featuring some fiendish technique from the soloistTriptych (on a Theme by Handel) is dedicated to Lesley Howie.

Between the Two Rivers - Philip Sparke

Between the Two Rivers was commissioned by Fanfare 'Prins Hendrik', from Aalst in the Netherlands. The title derives from the fact that the town of Aalst lies between two tributaries of the River Dommel. The community is a highly religious one, so the famous Luther chorale, Ein' Feste Burg, was an obvious choice for Philip Sparke to use as the theme for this new work. It takes the form of a theme with four contrasting variations. Variation 1 is a moto perpetuo, variation 2 has a slower march like feel, variation 3 is a sinister slow movement and the final variation is in the form of a lyrical fugue. Between The Two Rivers is sure to become a major work in modern brass band repertoire.

Nimrod - Edward Elgar - Phillip Littlemore

Elgar wrote his Enigma Variations between 1898 and 1899. It is without a doubt Elgar’s best-known large scale composition, and is dedicated to ‘my friends within’, as each variation is an affectionate portrayal of one of his circle of close acquaintances. The ninth variation, Nimrod, is dedicated to Augustus J. Jaeger, Elgar’s publisher at Novello & Co. and also his editor and close friend. The name of the variation refers to ‘the mighty hunter before the Lord’ and can be found in the Book of Genesis. The name J?ger is German for hunter. Often used for solemn occasions, it is the most poignant and beautiful pieces of British music. Nimrod is recorded by the Leyland Band on the CD Crown Imperial conducted by Thomas Wyss. A soundclip of the music can be found here Item Code: TPBB-026 Duration: c.3'00"

Believe Me If All Those Endearing Young Charms - Simone Mantia - David Childs

"Believe Me, if All Those Endearing Young Charms" is a popular folk song of early 19th century Ireland and America. However, Simone Mantia, a pioneer of American euphonium music, composed this theme and variations on the melody in the early 20th century and it remains a staple of the solo euphonium repertoire today.Mantia was born in Palermo Sicily in 1873, but immigrated to the United States at the age of 17. He was the first master of euphonium to work in the era of recorded sound and as a result, left a legacy as euphonium soloist on several Sousa and Pryor band recordings. His Believe Me if All those Endearing Young Charms in one such track from that Legacy. An arrangement for euphonium and brass band was later made by Stanley Boddington, but here we have a 21st century arrangement by one of today's euphonium stars, David Childs.
