Recommended - Championship & 1st Section One Small Step is a programmatic piece describing the launch, the journey to the moon and the successful landing on the Moon's surface by the crew of the Apollo 11 mission in 1969. Commissioned by The Flowers Band, helping to lead them to their 'Most Entertaining Band' award-winning performance at the 2013 Butlins Mineworkers Brass Band contest, the piece also won the 'Best New Composition' award at the 2013 West Lothian Festival of Brass with its performance by The Co-operative Funeralcare Band. It is an ideal concert feature for entertainment contests opening up opportunities to incorporate multi-media snippets of the associated Presidential speeches and video footage of the historic moments that the piece depicts. Recommended - Championship & 1st Section Reflections of Freedom depicts the feelings and emotions of the many migrant farmers who left 19th Century Scotland to set up a new life in the 'New World'. In particular, the joy experienced on reaping their first harvest, so the American folk tune, Bringing in the Sheaves in featured throughout the piece. Reflections of Freedom was Written for the US Army Brass Band in Washington DC and premiered by them in 1997. Reflections of Freedom was the title track on the Whitburn Band CD of the same name, recorded in 2004. Suitable as a test piece for 1st section brass bands. Includes score & parts

Freaks! - Gavin Higgins
Freaks! was written for Lisa Sarasini in 2006 and first performed by her with Zone One Brass at the Royal College of Music, London. This tuneful and flamboyant showpiece was inspired by the Tod Browning film of the same name. The 1932 black and white cult classic was banned for many years due to its controversial morality issues and lead characters - real life side show 'freaks'. It is one of the most bizarre things to have ever come out of Hollywood. Gavin Higgins' virtuoso trombone solo is programmatic in style, full of humour with a sinister undercurrent, and is broken into seven short scenes: Introduction Roll up... From the Sea - Geert Jan Kroon
From the Sea is a three-part work with the theme of land reclamation. The first part (The New Land) expresses the feelings of expectation and tension that come with the brand-new land. The second part (The Old Sea) is a nostalgic look back at the (old) sea. A sea that was sometimes turbulent, but also a source of life. The third part (The Future Land) captures the joy of living on the new land up to the present day. The work was commissioned by the joint music associations of the Noordoostpolder.

The Final Frontier - Geert Jan Kroon
In The Final Frontier, the composer explores different associations with the universe. Inspired by Stephen Hawking's (1942-2018) book Brief Answers to the Big Questions, the piece describes the wonders and dangers of the universe, the big questions about the smallest elements, and the possibility of space travel. The work consists of four movements. The first movement, 'Energy and Space', is the exposition of both main materials. With energy and space, a universe can be created. The second movement, 'The Great Unknown', is a fast section in which the materials are further explored and depicts the dangers of the universe, like supernovae and black holes. The third movement, 'The Big Questions', is a slow movement with different soloists and music of a reflective nature. Imagine how in the tiniest elements, whole dimensions could be rolled up. Also, a Dutch pioneer in cosmology is hidden in the notes. The fourth movement, 'The Final Frontier', is a big build-up to a majestic finale, portraying the excitement of space travel. The Final Frontier was the set test piece of the 3rd section at the Dutch National Brass Band Championships.

Harlequin Dances
Harlequin dances is a stunning original composition showcasing a variety of dance styles. The piece starts with a mambo-like section, then moves into a more romantic ballad-type movement. This then winds up into a Viennese waltz which uses cheeky glissandi, then onto a very clever tempo shift and back to a recap of the mambo music which races along to a thrilling climax.

This evocative cornet solo was inspired by a set of old street lights that had been set up in a neighbours garden. A slow, wistful introduction leads into a lively march with some touches of ragtime. Also available for solo cornet and piano.
