The Breeze And I - Ernesto Lecuona - Neville Buxton

The songs of Ernesto Lecuona may have been covered by more exotica artists than any other composer, yet they're relatively unknown except to fans of traditional Latin music. It's a shame, for Lecuona was a multi-talented artist and a pioneer of Latin music in America. A Lecuona song has everything an exotica lover could ask for: mystery, excitement and rhythm. "The Breeze & I" is no exception, starting with a Bolero, then moving from Beguine to Swing before returning to the Bolero to finish. Recorded by Jimmy Dorsey with Bob Eberly singing Al Stillman's lyrics, this tune became a number one hit in the U.S.

Excelsior - Fanfare and Theme - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

The New Mills Old Prize Band is the inheritor of a proud tradition going back 200 years. Its origin lies in a brass and reed band formed in 1812 by Timothy Beard and it is one of the oldest brass bands in continuous existence in the UK.The New Mills Old Prize Band is inextricably linked to the Beard family. Timothy Beard the founder of the band, was one of five children and two of his brothers, John and Stephen, were to join him in the band.Excelsior is based on the hymn tune ‘Ransom’ believed to have been composed in 1838 by Timothy’s brother Stephen Beard. I have taken this hymn tune and composed a concert fanfare utilising the main melodic material from the original hymn tune. The title of the piece comes from the bands original motto “Excelsior!”Paul Lovatt-Cooper

Veni Immanuel (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

Meditation on O Come, O Come ImmanuelThe Advent hymn we all know today as O Come, O Come, Immanuel was arranged in its modern form by Thomas Helmore and published in Hymnal Noted in 1856. Both the words and melody, however, predate this version by centuries. The words are based on a 9th century antiphon and the tune, Veni Immanuel, is taken from a 15th century processional of French Franciscan nuns, part of the setting for the funeral hymn Libera Me. This arrangement aims to expand on the power and mystery of the original tune and will be most effective if the solo cornet at the start and end of the piece can be placed away from the band, maybe at the back of the auditorium.Duration: 6:00

Black and White Rag - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

I have taken this tune and arranged it as a xylophone solo with brass band accompaniment. When performing the piece it is relatively straight forward. However, the soloist needs to be aware that the split part at rehearsal figure B in the first four bars is a melody and accompanying figure. The ‘stride like’ quavers that start on notes C and G are to be played with the left stick, while the syncopated solo melody line is to be played with the right stick. At the fifth bar of figure B the soloist can play the semiquavers as they see fit and then return to their ‘stride’ style at bar 46 and so on when it appears. This is a great Rag and it works really well as a solo showcase for xylophone.Paul Lovatt-Cooper

A Coventry Rhapsody - Karl Whelan

For bands searching for an 'Overture' kind of work to programme into their Christmas concerts, look no further. "The Coventry Carol" dates back to the 16th century and is one of three songs from a nativity play entitled "Pageant of the Shearman and Tailors" which was traditionally performed in Coventry. The carol itself depicts the "Massacre of the Innocents" in the nativity narrative from the "Gospel of Matthew", in which King Herod, orders the execution of all baby boys under the age of two in the vicinity of Bethlehem. In this Rhapsody, Karl Whelan takes the familiar tune and turns it into an impressive showcase for bands looking to give the audience something different and very enjoyable for their festive concerts.

Prelude on an Irish Folk Tune (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

The Irish folk tune, which appears towards the end of the piece, is Slane, a hymn tune version of the much older folk melody The Banks of the Bann. In Prelude on an Irish Folk Tune, fragments of the folk tune hint at what is to come later in the piece, but another folk-like tune is predominant. This later acts as a descant to Slane when it finally appears. Add a little Sparke sparkle to any concert with this lovely interlude. 04:00

Partita - Score and Parts - Philip Sparke

Partita was written in 1989 to a commission from Eikanger/Bj?rsvik Musikklag (Norway) who were European Champions at the time. There are three movements.1 The first movement is almost a miniature concerto for band. It opens with a relentless quaver passage in the basses, which builds until the whole band is involved. Horns and baritones are first to take centre-stage in close harmony and the euphoniums and basses follow them. These forces combine to introduce the cornets that have a 10-part fanfare to themselves before the trombones interrupt. The opening quaver figure returns, somewhat ominously, and, after the full band recalls previous material, brings the movement to a close.2. Starts with a cornet solo over a pulsating accompaniment after which the band builds to a noble tune on the trombones. The full band takes over and brings back the opening cornet tune with which the soloist, with the aid of a euphonium counter-melody, quietly ends the movement, leading directly into:3. A sparkling vivo, which opens with the fanfare-like figures throughout the band until a solo cornet, emerges with an acrobatic tune. The whole band takes this up until horns; baritones and trombones introduce an energetic second subject, which leads to a full band climax in the form of a jubilant chorale. This died away to reintroduce the opening fanfare against a new theme from the trombones, which eventually leads back to a recapitulation. We are then thrown headlong into a 12/8 presto, which hurtles to a coda, which recalls the opening themes.

The Fatheras Blessing (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Downie, Kenneth

This music is a treatment of the tune that William Tomer wrote for the words 'God be with you till we meet again'. In recent years, Ralph Vaughan Williams' tune 'Randolph' has often been the preferred choice to accompany these words although this composer was drawn to the original tune. Serenity is the prevailing mood of the piece although there is chance for the band to 'open up' in the link passages.
