The work, set as the test-piece for the 2005 European Brass Band Championships was inspired by a theme from the second movement of Tchaikovsky's String Quartet No.1 (Andante Cantabile). It consists of a number of musical metamorphoses on the theme and includes several excerpts from Tchaikovsky's Fourth and Sixth Symphonies and Romeo and Juliet. The most unconventional element of the work is instrumentation for ten tuned bottles to be played by members of the Cornet section. This gives the piece an Indonesian Gamelan effect. This enchanting melody is from the fourth movement of Bach's Cantata 140 which was composed in 1731 using the parable of the wise and foolish virgins as the text. The work is beautiful in its simplicity with only three melodic lines, demonstrating Bach's counterpoint at its best. Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) stands, with Handel and J.S. Bach, as one of the titanic figures of late Baroque composition. Not only was he lauded as a composer of vocal and instrumental works both sacred and secular, he was without doubt, the most prolific composer of his age. In addition to hundreds of vocal works, including forty-nine operas, he composed five hundred concertos. The Four Seasons are probably the best known of his concerti with the second movement, Largo, portraying time spent by a roaring fire listening to the rain pounding against the window. This new arrangement for brass band retains all the warmth of the original.

Firestorm - Stephen Bulla
The inspiration for this piece, commissioned by the United States Army Band, came from the Gulf and its constant presentation to the world as a media event on television. The composer wanted to capture the colour and events of war as they were played out on the television screen. Composed as a single movement rhapsody, the work is framed by the riveting sounds of airborne bombing raids with brass and percussion combining to create a gripping sense of tension.

An Emerald Jubilee celebrates a 40th anniversary. Jan de Haan composed this colourfully orchestrated concert march to celebrate Will van der Beek's 40th anniversary as conductor of the Deutsche Musikverein Haaren. As publisher of van der Beek's transcriptions of classical works Jan de Haan can look back on many years of successful collaboration with the knowledge that there will be many more to come. Unusually cast in a minor key, the main theme provides an interesting contrast to the more melodic major key of the second movement. The relatively slow theme gives this march a dignified stately and subdued quality.

'New York'... or to be more precise, Manhattan. For anyone who is familiar with this bizarre and wonderful city, this piece needs no explanation. This brass band transcription has been made by Phillip Littlemore and provides adriving and punchy 4 minute work for brass band. 'New York' is the third movement of 'East Coast Pictures', originally written for wind band, commissioned in 1985 by the British Youth Wind Orchestra with funds from NationalWestminster Bank plc. These three short 'pictures' were inspired by several visits by the composer to a small part of the USA's East Coast, an area that provides great extremes in the geography and thepeople.This work has recently been recorded on the CD 'East Coast Pictures' by the Leyland Band, conducted by Michael Fowles, and is available from this site (catalogue number: 0-571-52109-6).

'Mixed Bag' stands midway between a collection and a hotchpotch. It is a colourful compilation of four completely different pieces, each with its own specific character. The first part is called 'Tanguillo' : as its name suggests, this Spanish dance is related to the Tango. In the next part, 'Maybe next time ....' a repeated bass line (Passacaglia) can be heard, first solo, but thereafter gradually the other instruments join in. The third part forms a huge contrast did the former part have a Baroque atmosphere, 'Rock Hard' seems to have come directly from the Rock 'n Roll era, reminding us of stars such as Bill Haley and Elvis Presley. The finale is acheerful, inciting movement called 'Gypsy Dance'.
