March Slav?was composed in 1876 at the request of Nicolai Rubenstein (who had recently spurned Tchaikovsky's first piano concerto, and might have wanted to return to favour with the composer). Tchaikovsky loved Russian folk music--looking to it for inspiration throughout his career--and he makes considerable use of it here. From the opening theme to the final glorious statement of the Czarist national anthem, the march draws on the music of his motherland. It was first performed in a charity concert to support a war effort in the Balkans. He composed and fully scored the march in the short time of just 5 days. At the first performance its impact was such that it had to be encored in full, receiving a tumultuous reception - twice! Duration: 7:20

Composed to mark the 200th anniversary of Richard Trevithick's momentous first journey in his steam locomotive. This event took place in the cornish town of Camborne, and it was 200 years later in 2001 that composer Goff Richards conducted massed local bands in the first performance of MYTHIC TREVITHICK! Following work in South America, Trevithick returned to his native Cornwall and, it is reputed, all the church bells rang out to greet him, an effect captured in the final bars of the piece. £38.00SYMPHONY No.2, Finale from (Brass Band) - Mahler, Gustav - Harper, Philip
One of the most life-affirming pieces of music ever composed, Mahler's 2nd Symphony, subtitled "The Resurrection", was first performed in Berlin in 1895. Mahlers interest in the mysteries of the afterlife is well-known and is a recurring theme throughout all his nine symphonies. Philip Harper has arranged the final passages of the 2nd Symphony, which begins with a profound hymn set to the words of Friedrich Klopstock-- Rise again, yea, thou shalt rise again. The music contains one of Mahler's magical transitionary passages, building in intensity, before the hymn is restated in all its majesty at the moment of glorious resurrection. This arrangement was performed as the finale to Cory Band's winning Brass in Concert programme in 2012. The publisher of this works suggests that it should be playable by 1st. section bands upwards.

A delightful set of three Christmas carols expertly adapted by Philip Doe. This suite of three pieces opens with Christmas Day, a dainty and light opening that shows the more delicate aspects of brass playing. The centre piece is a new version of The Coventry Carol, which open with a first verse rendition for quartet before developing a more baroque-style treatment that sits over an ostinato bass line. The movement reaches its climax with flourishes from the cornets leading to a rendition of the carol at fortissimo, and treated with slightly altered, harmonies before coming to rest with the opening quartet delivering the tierce de Picardie. The final movement is I Saw Three Ships, with handy interjections from several other carols, making a rousing climax to a enjoyable set of three Christmas portraits. Duration: 7.00

This trombone solo with brass band was arranged by Ian Jones for Ronald Prussing, principal trombone of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, for a recording with the Melbourne Staff Band. This sublime arrangement of the much loved hymn tune Rockingham ('When I survey the wondrous cross'), was arranged by Karl Whelan in memory of Frank Naylor. Frank was a faithful member of North Ashton Band based in Wigan (UK), a renowned tenor horn player and an inspiration to his many pupils over the years. In reference to Frank's slow melody piece of choice, there is also a reference in the trombones to Star of Bethlehem by Stephen Adams, leading into the final verse.
