Brass Monkey's Soloists - Martin Geovess
The main goal of any training band is to eventually see the players progress through the ranks and ultimately, be placed within the senior band. This latest instalment of the Brass Monkeys series, aims to bring that goal much closer and boost the confidence of the learners. The 'Brass Monkey's Soloists' publication features four specially composed works which allows the young soloists to perform a feature piece with accompaniment from the senior band. There is no bigger confidence boost than playing up alongside the 'big band'. The specially tailored solo parts are written at an advanced training band level, whilst the senior band parts will keep them busy as they aid the future generations to come. Commissioned by The City of Hull Band for their 2019 Brass In Concert programme, this evocative cornet and euphonium duet pays tribute to the trawlermen who lost their lives in three tragedies that took place in early 1968. The work comprises of two seafaring hymns, "Eternal Father Strong to Save" and "Nearer My God to Thee", using the tunes they are most commonly sung to in the 21st. The title of the work was inspired by the Hull seaman's mission, who in their literature describe themselves as an 'anchor for the soul' of the Humber shipping crews and their families.

This classic song has been entertaining audiences around the globe since it was originally written back in 1977. It didn't reach world-wide success until the piece was recorded by artist Bette Midler and featured in the film, The Rose. Songwriter, Amanda McBroom recalls that she wrote the piece in just 45 minutes. The work has now been arranged as a gorgeous Euphonium solo with lower brass (flugelhorn down the band) accompaniment and is a great new addition to a soloist's repertoire. The work is not technically demanding and the lyrical tone of the piece is one that will allow players of all ages to shine with this solo. Inspired by the infamous investigation into Jack the Ripper, Abberline follows Detective Inspector Frederick Abberline through the mist-shrouded streets of Victorian London in his desperate pursuit of a killer who remains forever just out of reach. Scored for brass band and solo euphonium, the piece blends atmospheric textures, shifting musical identities, and virtuosic demands to capture a narrative that is as haunting as it is unresolved. The piece opens in a world of shadows - the foggy alleys of Whitechapel - where tension simmers beneath the surface. The euphonium enters cautiously, as if stalking unseen figures, echoing the danger and uncertainty that cloaked the city in fear. This eerie calm is broken suddenly: the Ripper strikes. The moment is brief but brutal, leaving only silence and horror in its wake. From here, the music shifts into an uneasy, angular waltz: the figure of Abberline takes center stage, portrayed by the soloist as he investigates the aftermath. The waltz is melodically off-kilter and harmonically unstable, capturing both the grotesque nature of the crime and the detective's mental burden. The scene then returns to the streets - but this time, the musical material is more intricate, fragmented, and tense. The threat has deepened, and again the silence is shattered by violence. A second, slightly altered waltz follows, further reflecting Abberline's obsessive descent into the case. In the final section, the chase begins in earnest. Themes from earlier return in quick succession, intensified and overlapping as time runs out. The ancient Dies Irae chant is woven into the texture, evoking fate and judgment. In a final, erratic surge, the euphonium and band race toward an ending that is breathless and unresolved - a reflection of history's unanswered questions and the ghost that always stayed one step ahead.
