Written in 1978, the work is constructed in three movements and is virtually a concerto for euphonium and band. The first movement begins with an unaccompanied motto theme, which uses all twelve notes of the scale but with a tonal feel. The slow second movement is based on an original song melody by the composer - 'The Eyes of God' - and affords lyrical and richly expressive playing that is typically euphonium. Movement three follows without a break - a capricious movement which ends triumphantly. Now available in versions for piano, brass band, wind band, and orchestra, Euphonium Music can be seen as a major contribution to the literature for the instrument. This descriptive work for brass band by Joe Galuszka depicts the horrors of war. War is all around us. Every day, another life is lost. Myanmar, Sudan, Ethiopia, Ukraine, Colombia, Afghanistan, Somalia, Syria and Yemen. As time goes on, more and more countries are brought to the end of what is a diplomatic struggle - in where war seems to be the only option. 'War! Terror! Panic! captures the tumultuous and relentless nature of war. With driving rhythms, aggressive brass fanfares, and thundering percussion, the listener is immersed in the chaos of battle. Dissonance and clashing harmonies depict the discord that pervades war and takes us on a journey through the terror and panic that comes with the brutality of conflict. Remembrance (For Those That We Have Lost) provides a poignant and reflective interlude, allowing the audience to contemplate the human cost of war. Mournful melodies and expressive solos for trombone, euphonium and glockenspiel, convey the depth of sorrow and loss, serving as a powerful reminder of the toll war takes on individuals and communities. The final movement, Hymn for Peace and Hope is a testament to the enduring human spirit and the yearning for harmony - dissonance and conflict gradually give way to consonance and resolution. We celebrate the human capacity for unity and the triumph of peace over strife, as we imagine a world at piece. Enduring Faith was commissioned by Christopher Ward and the Five Lakes Silver Band and is a lyrical work for brass band that explores the intersection of hope, resilience, and conviction. Designed with a focus on melodic clarity and expressive phrasing, the composition moves through a series of nuanced emotional shifts - ranging from quiet, reflective passages to moments of expansive lyricism and affirmation. The harmonic structure travels through several keys, serving as a musical metaphor for the changing seasons of life. Throughout the piece, the texture is enriched by featured soloists from across the ensemble, including flugel horn, cornet, euphonium, baritone, and trombone. This work is dedicated to Doug and Stephanie Bayne, long-standing members of the Five Lakes Silver Band, in recognition of their commitment to their community and their steadfast support of the ensemble. It was recorded by the Five Lakes Silver Band on their 2025 album, Legacy. Recommended - Championship to 2nd Section Written for Katrina Marzella and the Black Dyke band, Losgaintir (or Luskentyre in English) is one of my favourite places in Scotland. Losgaintir is on the west coast of the isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides and has an outstanding beach widely regarded as one of the most beautiful in the world. Losgaintir is a wonderful place to be on warm sunny days with its long stretch of white sands, aqua marine seas, the incredible mountain backdrop of south Lewis and the uninhabited island of Taransaigh in view. The weather in Harris is notorious for changing very quickly and this piece tries to reflect this. Although idyllic on a calm, sunny days, on stormy days Losgaintir's character becomes dark and foreboding, with low dark clouds and sweeping winds from the Atlantic creating a dark, brooding atmosphere. The opening melody (written modally like a traditional Scottish Gaelic air) depicts the calm serenity of Losgaintir on a beautiful summer's day. The character of the fast section that follows portrays winter in Losgaintir during a tempestuous storm with bracing winds.
