    Stories From The Steel City - Jonathan Bates

    In 2013, Deepcar Brass Band, based in the north of Sheffield at the foot of the Pennines, celebrated their 25th Anniversary year. To that end, they commissioned the upcoming composer Jonathan Bates to pen a new work for the band that reflected not only the band’s triumphant milestone, but also the history of the steel city. This exciting work features a variety of styles and has an interlude that hears the sounds of metal being clanged to conjure up images of the cities steelwork heritage. Jonathan Bates has since gone on to compose for many of the country’s top bands and all his works see success with melodic lines and skilful use of the brass band colours.

In this comedy item, originally composed for piano duet, the feeling of Christmas is ever present.     SOUTHERN CROSS, The (Brass Band Set) - Brian Bowen

    The Southern Cross is one of several excellent marches by Brian Bowen in which he carried on the more sophisticated pattern of British marches by Wilfred Heaton, Leslie Condon and Ray Steadman-Allen. It was written for the Box Hill (Australia) Corps jubilee celebrations in 1970 and formed part of the band's repertoire when it toured Great Britain in the same year. The first half of the march features part of the song, 'March on!' by Klaus Ostby, an early pioneer of Salvation Army music in Scandinavia. The contrapuntal layering of melodies in the trio, especially in the finale where 'March on!' sounds one more triumphant time, is notable, as is the shift to a slower, more stately tempo. The harmonic and rhythmic style also represents the more modern sounds of Salvation Army brass band music in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Right from the opening gestures, listeners at early performances knew that a page had turned in the evolution of the Salvation Army march.

    A Journey to The Bermuda Triangle - Pimpanit Karoonyavanich

    A Journey to The Bermuda Triangle - Pimpanit Karoonyavanich - 11'20'' - BVT117 After Karoonyavanich has seen her favourite seaview painting by Romain Steppe (1859-1927) for the first time, she was directly inspired and started to write “A Journey to The Bermuda Triangle”. This work consists of 4 sections: The Storm, The Graveyard, The Kingdom of Mermaids and The Escape. The concept of the opening is influenced by Chopin's Etude Op.25 No.11 “Winter Wind” which begins with a calm melodic theme. Then it turns immediately into the agitated and energetic movement representing the calm ocean that turns wild. The storm has taken away many pilots and sailors' life’s, they say people who survive from the storm were able to see the ruined of the victims at the grave yard. This movement of "Graveyard" sounds mysterious and dreadful. The following section "The Kingdom of Mermaids" repeats the storm theme and builds up gradually with solo’s to finally have a big climax reflecting the beauty of the Kingdom of Mermaids. According to one of the legends of the Bermuda Triangle, mermaids exist there and trick the sailors with their beautiful voice and appearance then take away all their souls. Some sailors realized that they were tricked and try to escape. Unfortunately, none of them could ever return back home. This section ‘The escape’ begins with low brass solos and gets more intense until the climax at the end honouring all the Bermuda Triangle's victims.

    Charge of the Light Brigade - Andrew Stevenson

    Charge of the Light Brigade tells the story of a battle in the Crimean War, where six hundred members of the light cavalry were sent to attack an Artillery Battery. However, due to miscommunications they were sent to the wrong Artillery Battery, past the original target. The 600 hundred soldiers then found themselves being attacked on two sides because of the error. 156 men lost their lives and another 122 were wounded.The piece follows the structure of the poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. The fanfare that starts the piece is the exact same used at the battle. The presto is the advance of the Light Brigade towards the Russian guns. The slow passage is a hymn for the men that lost their lives and the finale symbolises the triumphant return of the men that survived, and how the memories of the horrific battle that took place linger on in their minds. Throughout the piece, I have used antiphonal sounds to reinforce the ideas that I have taken from the poem.A recording of the Charge of the Light Brigade is available on the Foden's CD, Patrons' Choice VII (DOY CD329)

    The travels of the Aztec people as they headed south through North America looking for a new home, acted as the inspiration for Lake of the Moon. The composition contains small fragments of Oriental music and South American rhythms and occasionally, Russian Cossacks seem to raise their heads. The journey from North to South is not without danger, which is represented by threatening sounds within the music. In the Adagio divoto the composer takes us along to the Texcoco Lake, which the Aztecs called the lake of the moon. Bring a little bit of South American history to your concert with Lake of the Moon.
