Seaside Rendezvous - Freddie Mercury - Iain McKnight

There was no greater showman in the world of rock than Freddie Mercury and, for many, no greater group than Queen. The release in 2018 of the film Bohemian Rhapsody brought the sounds of Queen to a new generation as well as providing a welcome dose of musical reminiscence for fans across the world. As well as an astonishingly gifted performer, Freddie Mercury was an equally adept composer, drawing upon his early musical training as a classical pianist as well as his eclectic musical tastes to create songs of immense character and imagination. With its echoes of music hall, vaudeville and no small amount of saucy postcard humour, Seaside Rendezvous is from the band's fourth studio album, A Night at the Opera, released in 1975. The song is so complex and makes such extensive use of multi-tracking and specially recorded effects - the tap dance segment, for example, was created by Freddie Mercury and Roger Taylor ‘performing' on the mixing desk with thimbles on their fingers - that Queen never performed it live.Colourfully scored and featuring numerous momentary solos around the band - including a feature for the cornet section on kazoos - this arrangement was made for Foden's Band and featured as part of their programme for the 2018 Brass in Concert Championships at Sage Gateshead. The band subsequently recorded it on their 2019 CD, Trials and Triumphs.

The Golden Apples of the Sun - Rodney Newton

This work was commissioned in 2012 by the percussionist, Yasuaki Fukuhara, and takes its title from the final verse of W.B.Yeats' poem, The Song of Wandering Aengus;Though I am old with wandering,Through hollow lands and hilly lands,I will find out where she has gone,And kiss her lips and take her hands; And walk among long dappled grass,And pluck till time and times are done,The silver apples of the moon,The golden apples of the sun. This piece does not seek to follow the narrative of the poem, but rather takes lines from it as an inspiration for three contrasting movements. The first movement, Through Hollow Lands and Hilly Lands, is in the form of a dogged march over a repeated bass line, featuring tom-toms, snare drum and cymbals playing rhythms associated with rock drumming. At the end of the movement, the marimba enters with material that will be heard in the next movement. The second movement, The Silver Apples of the Moon, features vibraphone, glockenspiel and crotales, as well as the dobachi (a resonant bronze bowl of Japanese origin). The music is delicate and ethereal. In contrast, the final movement, The Golden Apples of the Sun, is energetic and fiery, featuring tubular bells, timpani and other tuned percussion instruments including cowbells.

HEALING POWER OF FLAME, The (B flat Baritone Solo with Brass Band) - Davoren, Tom

As the progressive rock band Transatlantic quote in their song of the same name, We All Need Some Light. Since the dawn of man, fire has been our most essential companion. A steadfast provider, it is a source of comfort, assurance and safety. On the other hand though, fire is one of natures most brutal and unpredictable forces; erratic, entrancing, devastating and spectacular. Ones personal 'fire' finds us in a multitude of ways and at once stage or another, everyone will search for The Healing Power of Flame. Duration: 10:00

Inter-Pop (Brass Band - Score and Parts)

Five movements in techno-pop style. The work begins with Rock March with a few pithy chords over a driving percussion accompaniment. Feeling Free is a slow ballad. Rockarab is devoted to 'the ship of the desert', the camel. Little Chi Yan is a very charming, romantic song for a sweet little girl. In Disco Lights, we hear the stirring sounds of drums and bass guitar while the lights flash in the crowded discotheque. 05:20

The Universal Band Collection (Brass Band - Score and Parts)

A collection of 5 short works in pop style which can be performed by any kind of compilation. The titles can be presented on the programme as separate works but the Universal Band Collection can also be performed as a complete suite. From a didactic point of view it is a suitable work to teach musicians something about the structure in music. For this purpose not only the big structure but also the small structure was kept very clear.Western Girl : A girl from the west of the USA rides her horse across the prairie, dreaming of her future. The rough structure: introduction - theme in a blues scale - the same thing in a different instrumentation - finale.Just a ballad : A ballad in pop style with a rough A-B-A form. First there is the introduction of the main theme (A), then follows a tenor melody in minor with a rhythmical reference to the main theme (B). Finally there is the main melody, performed tutti with a different rhythm in the drums (A').Play the Game : An English saying meaning: play fairly. Playful music in up-tempo with a wink to China, where almost all games are manufactured nowadays. Once again an A-B-A structure here.San Diego : A Mexican fugitive enjoys his freedom in America but also remembers his place of birth with melancholy. A sad minor melody with a straight trendy beat appears twice. The second time it has a slightly different instrumentation, in which the muted trumpets represent the Mexican feeling.Final Dance : Eventually there is a dance with an introduction in renaissance style, followed by a fast dance in rock style. All this composed in a classical song structure: introduction, verse, bridge, chorus, shortened verse, bridge, chorus, chorus. 10:37

Diamonds - Jerry Lordan - Len Jenkins

In November 1962, ex-Shadows members Jet Harris and Tony Meehan decided to work as a duo and went to No 1 with a Jerry Lordan composition, "Diamonds". Harris, a bass player, took an ordinary Fender guitar and detuned every string a whole tone to enable him to hit notes which were lower than an ordinary guitar. However, it was apparently difficult to work with on stage since once the strings were slackened they would go out of tune very easily. The duo went on to have a second Top 10 hit with "Scarlett O'Hara" which is also available from Wobbleco Music in an arrangement for brass band. Both arrangements seek to capture the characteristic style of 60's rock music and retain the signature drum solos for which they are rightly remembered. But in addition, both pieces also appeal to a younger generation who may not have heard the originals. Our young kit drummer in Woburn Sands 'A' Band commented "...the (drum) part has the slightest shuffle feel to it, which improves the groove of the song, and to replicate the vintage snare-drum sound, I have heard that you can place a towel or a cloth over the head of the drum. I think it would work well...(otherwise) the drum part stays relatively simple and repetitive"...Chance to re-create the sound of the 60's.....Go for it!

Paint It Black - Mick Jagger & Keith Richards - Len Jenkins

"Paint It Black" (originally released as "Paint It, Black") was written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, and first released as a single on 6 May 1966. It became the Rolling Stones' sixth number one in the UK and has remained influential as the first number one hit featuring a sitar. The song came at a pivotal period in The Rolling Stones' recording history, a time that saw the song-writing collaboration of Jagger and Richards assert itself as the principal composers of the band's original material. Its lyrics are for the most part meant to describe bleakness and depression and describe the extreme grief suffered by one stunned by the sudden and unexpected loss of wife, lover or partner. It famously plays during the end credits of the film Full Metal Jacket. Beginning in the style of an ironic minuet, which can be by-passed by starting at bar 54 where the heavy rock beat takes over, the piece is interesting and within the capabilities of 3rd or 4th section bands. For those bands with a drummer and one percussionist, an alternative percussion part is provided.
