Bristling with energy and vitality, this is a terrific arrangement of the fourth and final movement from Piano Sonata No. 2, which is Sergei Prokofiev's celebrated piano solo piece composed in 1912. The arranger writes: 'Whilst I have endeavoured to maintain the characteristics and flavours of the original piece, I altered and added dynamics and musical notations in a few cases where they seemed to fit the medium of the brass band and to reflect a general performance manner of this piece on a piano. I also added percussion parts which provide additional colour. After careful consideration, I decided to keep to the original key in order to maintain the brightness and clarity of the original work.' PDF download includes score and full set of parts. A rousing fanfare for brass and percussion, this work by Andrew E. Lawson was the winner of the prestigious Dallas Winds Fanfare Competition 2019. Here it is has been transcribed for brass band by Andrew Wainwright. The composer writes: 'In honor of the 1,177 crewman killed among the battleship USS Arizona, For Uncommon Valor is inspired by the story of the brave men, women, and children who witnessed, fought, and endured the tragic events of December 7, 1941 at Pearl Harbor, and across the Hawaiian Island of Oahu. The story of Pearl Harbor, however, does not end with a sunken battleship, or a defeated nation. A mighty nation, 'the sleeping giant', awoke to face the challenge at hand and claim victory for those who could not claim it for themselves. The uncommon valor displayed by the men and women of the Pacific Fleet brought forth the greatest fighting force ever seen and put on display for all to see, the strength and resilience of the American people.' Fanfare of Joy was commissioned by the Burbage Band (Buxton) and its conductor Steven Critchlow in 2017. Based on Joy to the World and The First Nowell, this spectacular work opens with a majestic brass fanfare, before breaking in a Celtic-style dance which builds to a dramatic conclusion. The fanfare opening serves to announce the arrival of something special. In this case, the fanfare announces the arrival of Christmas, a time of joy and celebration. The Celtic-style dance is a lively and energetic movement that captures the spirit of Christmas. The music is full of syncopated rhythms and intricate melodies, driven by percussion. The final movement of the piece is a dramatic conclusion that brings the work to a rousing finish. The music is full of excitement and energy, and a fitting celebration of the Christmas season. "Variations for Brass Band" consists of a chorale and 5 variations of brilliant, lyric and humorous character. The piece also contains several soloparts and elements of ensemble.Each variation has its own title, but the piece should be played in its entirity.The chorale is based on a minor pentachord, and each variation begins with these five notes, with different rhythmical treatment.There is also a little secondary "theme", consisting of five notes which are heard throughout the work (eg. as sixteens/semiquavers in cornets in bar 1).When the beams sweep across the Earth, they can be heard as regular pulses. We call them pulsars.In this piece there are three percussion parts. In addition there is an "optional part" to replace the marimba and vibraphone written in the three original percussion parts if desired. This fourth part is shown in the full score.

Strange New Worlds was commissioned by Nicholas Childs for the National Children's Brass Band of Great Britain with funds provided by Arts Council England.The COVID-19 pandemic made it necessary for the 2020 course to transition from residential to virtual and the work was designed to accommodate this change. The participants individually filmed themselves to a click track and the videos were collated to create a "virtual" performance. The premiere was streamed live on YouTube on August 7, 2020.The work is in 5 movements with a narrative dictated by the individual movement titles. Although to me this narrative is clearly defined, multiple scenarios present themselves. Some may interpret the story as being one from the ancients while others might identify with the science-fiction of H.G. Wells. Others still will relate to the recent surge of interest in 1980s culture and the Netflix series Stranger Things (to which the title of my work pays homage). Nor would it be unreasonable to consider the piece an analogy reflecting events in 2020. Listeners will decide the story (or message) for themselves.The five movements are: I. Things to Come; II. Descent to Darkness (featuring Cornets, Trombones and Percussion); III. Resistance (featuring Horns, Baritones, Euphoniums, Basses and Percussion); IV/V. Aftermath/A New HopeDuration: 8.00

The Canticle of the Sun was commissioned by Birmingham Symphonic Winds conductor Keith Allen for Simone Rebello. The work is based on the canticle written by St. Francis of Assisi (1182-1226) whose ideas that nature and the material world were gifts from God and should be valued and appreciated. The brass band version was made especially for a studio recording by the Black Dyke Band conducted by Nicholas J. Childs with Simone Rebello on percussion. Duration: 13.00

This work was commissioned by Boosey & Hawkes Band Festivals (with funds provided by the Arts Council of Great Britain) for the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain, held at the Royal Albert Hall, London, on 7th October 1984.Dances and Arias is in one continuous movement, but as the title suggests is a series of alternating fast and slow sections as follows: Dance - Aria I - Dance (scherzo) - Aria II - Dance. The opening dance is energetic and introduces a four-note motif (on trombones) which is the basis for much of the melodic material in the work. Throughout, there is a continuous process of thematic cross-reference and transformation.The first aria unfolds a long melody on solo cornet, eventually continued by all the solo cornets, and dissolving into a shimmering harmonic background (muted cornets, horns and baritones) over which is heard a brief self-quotation on solo tuba. This leads into the second dance, a frenetic scherzo, followed by the second aria, in the style of a lament (solo euphonium, followed by two flugel horns). This builds to a powerful climax which subsides, leaving the percussion to introduce the final toccata-like dance. It transforms material from the opening before a coda brings the music to a triumphant close. The large percussion section is an integral part in the work and uses a wide variety of instruments including timpani, glockenspiel, vibraphone, xylophone, tubular bells, tom-toms, snare drum, bongos and tam-tam.The work is dedicated to my brother and sister.- Edward GregsonDuration: 14.00
