Fading Signals, by Lucy Green, was the winner of the 2025 UniBrass Composition Competition. The work is a contemplative exploration of the subtle nuances of communication, memory, and the passing of time. It reflects on the experience of crossing paths with others and forming connections that may gradually grow distant over time. This piece invites listeners to reflect on how signals - both audible and emotional - can shift, evolve, and sometimes fade. ABOUT THIS PIECE: "Korobeiniki" is a nineteenth-century Russian folk song that tells the story of a meeting between a peddler and a girl, describing their haggling over goods in a veiled metaphor for courtship. Outside of Russia, "Korobeiniki" is widely known as the Tetris theme (titled "A-Type" in the game), from its appearance in Nintendo's 1989 version of the game. One of our most popular arrangements, this piece is high-paced and features all the usual trappings associated with this musical style - fireworks to start, a slow, melancholy iteration of the melody, an unruly accelerando, and all finished with a loud shout ('Oi!') from the band! A Christmas Trifle is a fantasy for brass band based on the famous English Carol, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. The piece begins very lively before changing to a more jazzy style with a walking bass. This is followed by a jazz-waltz in 5/4 with solos for flugal, euphonium and soprano cornet which leads into a slow chorale section, gradually building from p to fff . This is followed by the final section which begins with a simple sleigh bell pulse over which the Tchaikovsky Christmas favourite, Trepak from the Nutcracker Suite is merged with the God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen theme bringing A Christmas Trifle to a rousing close. He was a pioneer in teaching the developing youth bands in the USA and by spreading the modern wind band music repertoire throughout Japan. He wrote over 200 works for symphonic band. 'Dutch Treat' was composed in the early seventies and immediately published in 1971 by Molenaar, a personal friend of Paul Yoder. It is an original arrangement of a traditional tune.

Fest - Polonaise - Johan Svendsen - Kjell Olav Martinsen
Johan Svendsen (1840 - 1911) was the first great Norwegian symphonic composer, as well as one of the leading conductors of his time. Next to Edv. Grieg, he was the most prominent figure in Norwegian music life at the end of the 1800's. Although he came from humble beginnings in Chistiania (now Oslo), he was to become a cosmopolitan who felt at home all over Europa. Svendsen spent most of his adult life abroad, living in Copenhagen for 25 years as maestro for the Royal Theatre Orchestra. Nonetheless he retained contact with Norway troughout these years and was a frequent and popular guest in his native country. He wrote his Festival Polonaise for a ball in 1873. MINNEAPOLIS IV (Brass Band Set) - Emil Soderstrom
This march was the outcome of a request from Minneapolis IV Corps to write a march to celebrate its 60th anniversary. At the time of its writing, Soderstrom had become a leading arranger for NBC Radio in Chicago and had mastered many contemporary American styles. His lush harmonies remind one of Gershwin, Porter, Berlin and Rodgers while even the scoring suggests an American big-band of the swing era! These and other novel touches make the march interesting to listen to, as well as to play, over 60 years on.

Grammy-nominated composer Chris Brubeck continues to distinguish himself as an innovative performer and composer who is clearly tuned into the pulse of contemporary music. Respected music critic for The Chicago Tribune, John von Rhein called Chris: "a composer with a real flair for lyrical melody--a 21st Century Lenny Bernstein." In addition to creating an impressive body of work, including several band pieces, chamber pieces, 3 concertos for trombone, a trombone quartet, and several concertos for stringed instruments, Chris maintains a demanding touring and recording schedule playing bass and trombone with his two groups: the Brubeck Brothers Quartet, with brother Dan on drums, Chuck Lamb on piano and Mike DeMicco on guitar (www.brubeckbrothers.com); and Triple Play, an acoustic jazz-funk-blues-Americana trio with Joel Brown on guitar and Peter Madcat Ruth on harmonica and Chris on bass, trombone and piano (www.chrisbrubeckstripleplay.com.) Additionally, Chris performs as a soloist playing his trombone concertos with orchestras and has served as Artist in Residence with orchestras and colleges in America, coaching, lecturing, and performing with students and faculty. Once a year he tours England with the group "Brubecks play Brubeck" along with brothers Darius (on piano) and Dan as well as British saxophonist Dave O'Higgins. Chris had been a long-standing member of the Dave Brubeck Quartet, writing arrangements and touring and recording with his father's group for over 20 years.

Brillante was commissioned by Peter Wilson for the British Bandsman Centenary Concert in 1987 and was first performed as a duet by Robert and Nicholas Childs. Later reworked as a solo with brass band accompaniment, it has become popular the world over - an accessible mix of sentiment and virtuosity! This new edition (2018) includes the original duet parts, the solo version, and incorporates a few small changes in phrasing to align with the concert band version also published by Winwood Music.
