When Thunder Calls - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

When Thunder Calls was commissioned by Dr Nicholas Childs and the Black Dyke Band for their performance at the Gala Concert of the Swiss Open Championships in September 2011. When composing this piece, I decided to focus on both the music and the stage presentation. The way the piece has been composed and designed makes it a very effective way of starting a concert or a second half of a concert. At the start of the piece, the percussion enter the stage and take their positions in their usual place behind the band. They begin playing the piece without a conductor. They keep repeating the opening section while the Basses, Horns, Baritones and Euphoniums march onto the stage. This group of musicians take their seats with the Horns, Baritones and Euphoniums sitting where they usually sit in the band but the Basses sit where the solo cornets usually sit, forming an inner semi-circle of lower brass. When seated and when the music gets to the end of bar 4 the piece continues onto section A. All performers keep repeating this next 4-bar phrase until the trombones march onto stage and stand at the front of the stage with the Bass Trombone standing in between the other two trombones. All performers then play from figure B to C with the trombones taking the lead at the front. When the performers get to rehearsal figure C they repeat this section (the same as section A) while the trombones move from the front of the stage and take their positions where the Basses would normally sit (between the horns and the percussion) and remain standing. Meanwhile, the flugel enters the stage and stands at the front of the stage (standing where the trombones did). When in position the flugel soloist picks up into rehearsal figure D.When the flugel soloist finishes playing, just before rehearsal figure F they then move to their normal seat in the band. At figure F the cornets march onto the stage from either side, they turn and stand side by side each other facing outward towards the audience forming two ‘fanfare’ lines either side of the lower brass. The conductor follows the cornets on stage and on cue they lift their instruments at the same time and perform when the piece gets to figure G.There is no more moving around from this point on other than the solo cornet to move forward with the solo euphonium and perform their duet at letter H. Also the horns are required to stand and play at letter I and then sit just before J.When performed with all the choreography, this piece makes for an exciting addition to any concert repertoire both for the performer and the audience.Suitable for 3rd Section Bands and Above

Marche Slave - Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

Tchaikovsky wrote Marche Slave in 1876 for a charity concert to support a war effort in the Balkans. He composed and fully scored the march in just five days. The themes are loosely based on three Serbian folk songs, each with a quite different character, and it also incorporates the Russian national anthem. At the first performance its impact was such that it had to be encored in full, receiving a tumultuous reception - twice! This arrangement was made for the combined forces of Black Dyke Band and Cory Band for the British Open Gala Concert given in Symphony Hall, Birmingham on Sunday 14th September 2008, the performance of which was conducted by the arranger.

    Brass Triumphant - Gareth Wood

Brass Triumphant is a four-movement work and was composed for the Cory Band during their 125th anniversary year of 2009.The first movement is a celebratory fanfare featuring a strong melody as the thread which runs throughout the whole work. The second movement is powerful in nature and reflects struggle and endeavour. The third movement is a beautiful slow melodic poem subtitled Mist of the Forest. A melody carried by the euphonium honours the great Welsh folk melodies we all know and love. The lollipop finale is a rollercoaster ride, taking us to the very edge of band technique. The hymn tune O Iesu Mawr appears though heavily disguised and is a reminder of the composer's Welsh Heritage. The Cory Band under Dr. Robert Childs gave the World premiere of this work during the World Music Contest Gala Concert in Kerkrade, Netherlands July 2009. It later received its British premiere during September of the same year in Birmingham's Symphony Hall, again performed by the Cory Band under the direction of Robert Childs.

Highland Cathedral - Ulrich Roever & Michael Korb

This lovely melody was composed by two German musicians who tried to emulate the popularity of the famous Scottish tune 'Amazing Grace'. The piece was an instant success and achieved a substantial degree of popularity after it was featured in the film, Four Weddings and a Funeral. It is usually performed with just pipes and drums, however this arrangement succeeds in joining this traditional classical melody, with a steady drum beat, and flowing contrapuntal descants and harmonies to create an epic opus. The arrangement was made for a performance in the Gala Concert in the Albert Hall, London, when it was performed by the Scottish Brass Band Champions, Scottish Co-op Band. The arrangement is functional with or without Bagpipes.

Auld Lang Syne - Traditional / Simone Mantia

This solo was originally composed and made famous in the early 1900s by Simone Mantia, the same man responsible for the popular variations on Believe me if all those Endearing Young Charms. Here the solo line is Mantia's original but the arranger has given the accompaniment a more modern treatment. The solo begins with a dashing introduction before the main theme is heard. A set of tricky variations then follow with a couple of cadenzas thrown in for good measure! This arrangement was made at the request of Nicholas Childs and Black Dyke Band and first performed by David Thornton and Black Dyke Band at the National Brass Band Championships Gala Concert 2004. The solo was subsequently recorded by the same performers and can be heard on Essential Dyke Volume V - Celebrate Rotary (DOYCD193).

    Branwen - Cai Isfryn

Branwen is the second in a series of compositions for brass band by Cai Isfryn, based on the tale from Welsh mythology of Branwen, the Welsh goddess of love. (The first, Vengeance, will be published later in 2009).Here we hear a character study of Branwen, with the soft and lyrical melody of the soprano cornet representing her beauty and the smooth underlying triplet feel of the band accompaniment creating an atmospheric and gentle effect.Branwen was premi?red by Bert van Thienen and the Cory Band at the Gala Concert of the 2009 European Brass Band Championships held in Ostende, Belgium.
