The title of this march, published in 1962, refers to the pin originally given to the mothers, but now also the fathers, of cadets entering The Salvation Army's Schools for Officer Training. It includes the song, 'Mothers of the Silver Star' (words by Arch. R Wiggins, music by George Marshall) which was specially written for the first occasion at which Silver Stars were presented. Also included is a Salvation Army flag song, 'Yellow star, and red and blue' also written by the aforementioned Wiggins and Marshall.

£29.95Swedish Festival Music (Brass Band - Score Only) - Downie, Kenneth
This three-movement suite was commissioned by the Swedish Brass Band Association as the test piece for the Championship Section of their 2008 National Contest. The first movement is inspired by the magnificent Swedish hymn 'How Great Thou Art'. Indeed the influence of that hymn can be traced in all three movements. The declamatory style of the opening gives way to other, more reflective expressions of awe and wonder. A more animated section develops before a final, triumphant statement of the 'How Great' idea returns to finish the movement. The slow second movement features another much-loved Swedish hymn. The music provides plenty of scope for expressive playing, and a feeling of intimacy should be created by the use of several short solo passages. The third movement Allegro brings a totally different, dance-like mood with frequent references to a reel from the region of Uppland. This eventually brings a return to the opening subject and a final, triumphant reference to 'How Great Thou Art'.

The Flag Of Freedom (Brass Band - Score only) - Coles, Bramwell
This march's title is not patriotic but relates to the Salvation Army flag, a symbol of spiritual liberation and salvation. The score notes, written by the editor, Lieut-Colonel Frederick Hawkes, refer to 'the well-contrasted melodies, the balanced effect of the scoring and ever-changing effects in regard to light and shade'.

The Liberator (Brass Band - Score only) - Marshall, George
George Marshall suffered a terrible mining accident four months after his marriage in 1918. Confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life, Marshall subsequently wrote many outstanding choral and instrumental works for The Salvation Army of which this march is one of the most popular.

This homage to a Salvation Army corps in Cambridgeshire is Albert Gay's most popular Salvation Army composition although he wrote several other excellent marches like His Royal Banner and Western Valley. Sketches from Nowhere is the second composition that Thomas Doss has written for brass band. The title was inspired by various images the composer saw in his mind's eye while working on this piece: pictures of foreign places; pictures of the creation of our world. The main motif that weaves its way from the beginning to the end of the work is meant to parallel humanity's great evolution: from its humble beginnings as mere stardust to the present day.
