Legends of CyfarthfaCombining the music of Joseph Parry and the legendary Cyfarthfa Band, Legends of Cyfarthfa is a technically challenging but musically rewarding concert work. Robert Crawshay owned the Cyfarthfa Ironworks in South Wales creating a business empire second to none.Cyfarthfa Castle was built by Crawshay as the family home from the income made via the ironworks. He wanted his own private band to play under the name of the ironworks with the best players in the world, playing on the highest quality instruments at the time. Employing the band members under the guise of iron workers, the Cyfarthfa Band was made up of virtuoso players, performing for the pleasure of the Crawshay dynasty.This virtuosity can be heard in some of the more technically challenging sections of Legends of Cyfarthfa. Joseph Parry was born in Cyfarthfa.He composed the first piece of music specifically written for brass band called Tydfil Overture for the Cyfarthfa Band, alongside many other memorable works for other instrumentation.Legends of Cyfarthfa incorporates many of Parry's works including his opera Blodwen, hymn tune Aberystwyth, folk melody Myfanwy and the Tydfil Overture, alongside many other melodies from Wales. The words of Chris Tomlin's popular song, Holy Forever, invite us to join in the Heavenly worship by the faithful voices of those who have gone before us. Across generations, people bow in reverence, while angels continually cry 'holy', bearing witness to a holiness that does not fade or change. Woven together with the historic hymn Holy, holy, holy (S.A.S.B. 31) this music refocuses our attention on God, whose holiness remains, even when our worship is incomplete.The piece moves between complexity and simplicity, rhythmic drive and chorale, uniting styles in a grand and hopeful conclusion that offers praise to God who is holy now and holy forever.

Deus Solus (meaning God Alone) was composed for the Melbourne Staff Band's 130th anniversary at the request of Bandmaster Ken Waterworth. It is based on three Christian tunes - the 18th century hymn O God, our help in ages past (S.A.S.B. 47), and the more contemporary songs God and God alone (Phill McHugh) and Chris Bowater's Faithful God (S.A.S.B. 360). The work begins quietly and with a sense of the unknown, with references to O God, our help in ages past, alluding to the formation and early days of the band.

Lew Wallace's Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ has inspired numerous adaptations for film, television and radio, each distilling the vast eight-part novel while preserving its enduring themes of compassion and forgiveness.Using the 1925 silent film as a starting point, I have reimagined the story as Ben-Hur, late in life, looks back on its defining moments, his memories coming alive before him.Part I: Ben-Hur's life unfolds in epic flashes: from Rome's splendour and tyranny to the haunting strains of Veni, Veni Emmanuel hinting at Christ's coming; a family betrayed, the galleys, heroic battles, and a chariot triumph--yet even victory offers no peace.Part II: Ben-Hur is torn by inner turmoil as he discovers his suffering family. In desperation he turns to Christ whose message of compassion and forgiveness transforms him, his thirst for vengeance giving way to healing and reconciliation.The work also acknowledges the profound influence of Eric Ball, whose biblical tone poems -- including King of Kings (1931) and Exodus (1937) -- helped shape the brass band repertoire of their time.The hymn Veni, Veni Emmanuel, symbolising the parallel narrative of Christ within this story, was likewise central to Ball's epic The Kingdom Triumphant.The work concludes with the well-known Dresden Amen, also heard in the closing bars of The Kingdom Triumphant.Ben-Hur 1925 was commissioned by The Whitburn Band, MD Nicholas Childs, and is dedicated to the memory of Derek Smith.

AT THE EDGE OF TIME (Brass Band Set) - Ray Steadman-Allen
At the Edge of Time is a Sinfonietta of three movements. The first is based on The Head that once was Crowned with Thorns, whilst the second is an eloquently vocal cornet solo. The Finale is the closest that Steadman-Allen gets to the impish tonal humour of Heaton and has a glorious surprise ending and reprise of the opening hymn.
