Commissioned by Micah Dominic Parsons, Blaenwern Diversions is based on the well loved hymn, Love Divine. The composer writes: 'Originally intended to be a set of variations, I found myself wandering around the notes of the hymn tune at the piano and found that the variations almost took on a life of their own resulting in what we have here - diversions. There are 8 diversions in total; the introductory diversion; diversions 1 - 6; and the finale which are divided into three linked movements. Blaenwern Diversions represents my entry into the world of contest works, so even though the piece aims to test the band, it is important that the band enjoy the music within no matter how treacherous!' Originally arranged for the New York Staff Band in 1991, this piece offers a lyrical and deeply expressive showcase for the soloist. This arrangement draws from a rich heritage, blending secular and sacred traditions. The melody, famously attributed to Colonel R. Mellish (1777-1817), is inspired by the classic 17th-century poem by Ben Johnson. Within The Salvation Army tradition, this beloved tune is paired with the sacred lyrics of William Drake Pennick, "There is a holy hill of God, its heights by faith I see" (The Salvation Army Song Book, No. 627), making it a versatile choice for both concert and worship settings. This setting is celebrated for its warm, melodic lines, perfectly suited to the mellow tonal qualities of the flugel horn. For those interested in studying the interpretation of this work, the New York Staff Band featured this arrangement on their 1992 recording, Under Three Flags (Triumphonic TRCD 1050). Attempting to recreate the atmosphere of mediaeval pilgrims, this suite comprises three separate, yet linked movements. I. Based on John Bunyan's poem 'He Who Would Valiant Be', the music reminds us of the words 'No foes shall stay his might, though he with giants fight, he will make good his right to be a pilgrim'. II. A transcription of the composer's own setting of 'God be in my head'. III. The original themes in this movement express feelings of joy and excitement of present day pilgrims journeying on the Christian path.

The name John Philip Sousa is no stranger to any brass band aficionado. Our Flirtations has its origins in incidental music written by Sousa for a play of the same name. It was written around 1880, about the time he was appointed Director of the U.S. Marine Band, a position he held until he formed his own civilian band in 1892. Sousa wrote over 130 marches, many of which have been transcribed for brass band.

New York is the third movement of East Coast Pictures, originally written for wind band, commissioned in 1985 by the British Youth Wind Orchestra with funds from National Westminster Bank plc. These three short pictures were inspired by several visits by the composer to a small part of the USAs East Coast, an area that provides great extremes in the geography and the people. Suitable for Premier Youth/2nd Section Bands and above. Duration: 6.00
