Tubilation
A fantastic tuba feature with brass band backing. Driving semiquaver rhythms push this piece forwards whilst remaining away from the centre of attention which is undoubtedly the big old tuba! Full of semiquavers and scales rushing up to the top of the range of the instrument, there can be no doubt that the tuba is the star of the show. The solo part is carefully thought through with enough rests to make it approachable, while the syncopatino in the other parts give the music an energy that is maintained to the very final flourish, instigated by a demisemiquaver scale run on the tuba! Intermediate and above ensemble parts, but the solo tuba part needs a fairly skilled and confident player to get the most out of this piece.

Symphonic Episodes (Bra) - Brian Balmages - Mike Kilmartin
This three-movement work by Brian Balmages is transcribed from his earlier work for brass, entitled Symphony No. 1 for Brass. Mike Kilmartin made a superb transcription for brass band. The short opening movement establishes one of the main themes in the work before coming to a soft conclusion. The second movement can easily be performed on its own with its beautiful lyrical melodies and powerful emotional impact. The third movement makes use of themes heard throughout the other movements before coming to a grand conclusion. This is a particularly effective choice for contest and festival use.

Casta Diva is possibly the most famous aria by Bellini. This is Norma's prayer to the moon goddess, and shows Bellini's high craftsmanship with melodies. The most famous version of this aria, was sung by Maria Callas in the 1950's, and a recording of this is still available. This is possibly the first arrangement of this tune for wind band, and will no doubt make a good impression.

Ave Maria - Vocal or Instrumental Solo - Bach-Gounod - Bjorn Mellemberg
This great piece is a result of two outstanding composers creative ability. The French composer Charles Gounod (1818-1893) used the Prelude No. 1 from "Das Wohltemperierte Klavier" by Johann Sebasian Bach (1685-1750) and added a beautiful melody to the original piece. The composition has the occurred in several versions both with and without lyrics and for many kinds of instrumentations.To the Conductor:It's important to take well care of the long phrases of the melody and it's warm and soft character.Make shure that the band balance the three elements of melody, harmony and the rhythmic (played by the clarinets) well. DELIBERATE (Brass Band Set) - Andrew Mackereth
So that there is no doubt about the correct pronunciation, the title of this festival (concert) march means 'to think about'! It was written in 2010 for the Belfast Temple Music School and recalls a particularly impressive open-air meeting from the previous year's school. The main theme heard is 'Onward, Christian soldiers' while there is also reference to 'A mighty fortress is our God'.
