Kelly wrote this march for the 1948 Kneller Hall March Contest. With the 4/7th Dragoon Guards Kelly took part into the landing in Normandy on D Day, june the 6th 1944; actually he was injured himself at the end of july. 'ARROMANCHES' is a suiting tribute to the heroes of the Allied landings at Arromanches.

Here we have a rather easy piece with a grand effect. This 2 x 4 voice Renaissance piece was composed by Orlando di Lasso for double choir. It can be performed by two (half) bands or by a band and a quartet. The separate parts are not really difficult, yet the performance as a canon can cause some difficulties, but that's precisely the pedagogical characteristic of the piece.

Midwinter is a Christmas song about how the holiday can be a highlight even in the darkest winters. The piece was originally written for brass quartet and choir, for Oslofjord Brass and Vivo Vokal's Christmas concert in 2019. This work was specially commissioned as the test piece for a new brass band competition in 1971, held at the Royal Albert Hall, London. It is in three movements, the titles of which all have literary connotations. The first movement, Dialoguetakes the form of 'conversations' between the instruments. The second movement, Soliloquy is dedicated to the memory of Gilbert Vinter - a composer who did so much in the 1960s to bring the brass band into the modern world. The final movement,Epigram, creates strong rhythmic contrasts and exploits the more virtuoso character of the brass band.

Cambridge Variations was commissioned by Philip Biggs and Richard Franklin with funds provided by All England Masters Brass Band Championship Ltd for their 1992 contest. The basis of the variations are the six musical notes in the word"Cambridge", (CABDGE), used mostly in reverse. The work falls into five sections (variations), which are all (to some extent) derived from the six-note row.

Malcolm Arnold is one Britain's best-loved composers. In 1948 he composed a very short suite for the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain - entitled simply To Youth. Seven years later he took To Youth and made some fairly major revisions, including a complete new movement, and the Little Suite for Orchestra was born. The Little Suite for Orchestra follows a very similar pattern to the later suites for brass band, starting with a bold, strident Prelude, which strangely ends quietly before a lovely, lilting, Dance composed in 3/8 time. Finally a rollicking and militaristic March brings the suite to a conclusion. This arrangement for brass band by Robin Norman is sure tobecome a classic in the brass band repertoire.

In upstate New York lie the Catskill Mountains - an extraordinary combination of tranquillity and power, peace and majesty. Once seen they call you back again and again. This brass band transcription has been made by PhillipLittlemore and explores the sonorous and warm sounds of the brass band. The Catskills is the second movement of East Coast Pictures, originally written for wind band, and was commissioned in 1985 by the British Youth WindOrchestra with funds from National Westminster Bank plc. These three short 'pictures' were inspired by several visits by the composer to a small part of the USA's East Coast, an area that provides greatextremesin the geography and the people.
