Music from Kantara (Score Only)

4th Section Test Piece 2016 National Finals of the British Brass Band Championship. Music from Kantara was written in 1994 and was first performed by Watership Brass, a band based near Newbury. The title comes from the name of the former home of the composer, in Winchester, a name which was inherited from the previous owners, and which presumably comes from the ruined castle of that name on the Northern coast of Cyprus. The music is not programmatic: it does not tell a story. It is a three-movement suite of absolute music, in a tuneful and straightforward idiom. The slow, central movement calls for playing of a sensitive, vocal nature.

Bones in the Stores (Trombone Feature with Brass Band) Rob Wiffin

This arrangement for trombone section and band combines two well-known wartime songs, The Quartermaster's Store and Bless 'em All, giving the trombone section a thorough workout as well as a lot of fun. The Quartermaster's Store is a traditional song from England; the origins of both tune and words are uncertain and may date back as far as the English Civil War. The origins of Bless 'Em All are also unclear - the words have been credited to Fred Godfrey in 1917, set to music composed by Robert Kewley, though earlier versions of the song may have existed among British military personnel in the 1880s in India. It was first recorded by George Formby Jr in 1940 and became a patriotic song. Dance from the Othello Suite (Brass Band) Coleridge-Taylor arr. Bushnell

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor is a British composer, who, from a young age, showed talent on the violin and entered the Royal College of Music, studying with Charles Villers Standford. His music become so popular that his Hiawatha trilogy was the second most performed choral piece (joint with Mendelssohn's Elijah, and only beaten by Handel's Messiah) with choral societies up and down the British Isles. In fact, Hiawatha was arranged by Charles Godfrey as a test-piece for the 1902 National Brass Band Championship of Great Britain, held at Crystal Palace.Commissioned by the theatre impresario Herbert Beerbohm, Coleridge-Taylor composed incidental music for His Majesty's Theatre London production of the Shakespeare play, Othello, in the West End, in 1909. In 1912, the play opened to the public, with a suite of five movements put together soon afterwards. The Dance, arranged here by Rob Bushnell, makes a great concert opener.This arrangement is for the British-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. The First Nowell (Brass Band, opt. Choir & Piano) Traditional arr. Barrie Gott

This charming setting by Australian composer Barrie Gott is of the favourite carol The First Nowell. Although this version is for brass band, choir and piano, it is orchestrated such that it will work for standalone brass band. The arranger writes: 'I have always been fascinated with the words and music of this majestic carol. It was first written for choir and piano and then orchestrated for the Brisbane Lord Mayor's Carols with the Queensland Pops Orchestra. A further arrangement for brass band was prepared for a Salvation Army event. The setting is for four verses (1,2,5 and 6) and tells the Gospel story in a nutshell.
