DURATION: 5 minutes. DIFFICULTY: 4th+. When it Is Peace was commissioned by Cold Ash Brass as a sombre, reflective featured work for their concet marking the centenary of the end of World War 1. The work was originally composed alongside choir, using text from local poets to the Thatcham area, and this version was later reworked as a stand-alone work for band.

Starring Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer, it was narrated by Robert Mitchum and is based on events relating to the Gunfight at the OK Corral, and the subsequent Wyatt Earp Vendetta, both of which took place in Tombstone, Arizona.The theme is crime, political corruption and law enforcement in the American west during the 1880s. This is an extensive work consisting of a theme, five variations and a finale. The theme is the hymn tune 'Whitechapel' whose former title 'Death is coming' did little to encourage its use! A wide range of moods are covered, from the delicate and tender to the robust and jubilant. The music was originally written for the London Citadel Band (Ontario, Canada).

The composer writes: Having received delightful reports about Neil Ferguson from his colleagues in Granite City Brass, I thought it might be a good idea to incorporate the musical initials from his name, EFEG, in the opening idea of the music. I used this short idea as a motif during the piece. A recurring comment in the tributes referred to his dry sense of humour, and particularly his ability to deliver a one-liner when least expected. The music does therefore contain a few surprises and sudden changes of direction. I also thought that it might be in character for me to include a little "joke" of my own, which is there to be heard by the very careful listener! Such listeners would do well to remember that the Granite City Brass, the commissioning band, is based in Aberdeen. The idea of commemorating such a faithful member of the band with a piece of music led me to try and write a noble, upright theme, which might be remembered as a melody in the future. I hope that it is a fitting tribute.
