Dardanella | Bernard & Black arr. Dario Salvi

'Oh Sweet Dardanella, I love your harem eyes. I'm a lucky fellow, to capture such a prize'Dardanella was written in 1919 and became one of the most popular songs of the 1920's selling 13 million copies, going on to become a huge jazz standard covered by the likes of Louis Armstrong and Bing Crosby amongst others. This arrangement for Brass Band by Dario Salvi takes us back to the most famous version of 1920 sung by Vernon Dalhart and Gladys Rice, where the opening calls to mind the sounds of a fairground.Dario's arrangement moves between styles with an almost clockwork sound at one point changing to laid back swing beat at another, all supporting this cheerful melody. Crimond (Score and Parts) - Peter Graham

Here is a most attractive and creative arrangement of the well-known and much-loved hymn tune by Peter Graham - one of the most popular writers for brass band. This is not a run-of-the-mill sing-along version, but a neatly constructed piece in its own right. Not too taxing to play, yet there are some flourishes to give it added sparkle!

The Garland Waltz (Tchaikovsky arr. Dan Price) - Dan Price

Brass Band Concert Series - Grade 4 'The Garland Waltz' comes from 'The Sleeping Beauty', the second of three ballets by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. Sleeping Beauty's theme is simplistic and focuses on the conflicting forces of good and evil through the characters the Lilac Fairy (good) and Carabosse (evil). The ballet's premiere in 1890 received more favorable accolades than 'Swan Lake' but Tchaikovsky never witnessed the works true success outside of Russia as he died in 1893. By 1903, 'The Sleeping Beauty' was the second most popular ballet in the repertoire of the Imperial Ballet, having been performed 200 times in only 10 years. The waltz and other music from the ballet has been used extensively on film and television, most notably on Disneys animated version of 'Sleeping Beauty' and the recently released 'Maleficent'.
